Just as Britain has positioned itself as the most munificent provider of weaponry to Ukraine, so it has adopted the most uncompromising of approaches to the terms for a final peace settlement with Russia. Judging by the near existential tone of the foreign secretary Liz Truss’s speech on Wednesday evening, the UK is self-consciously now on the provisional wing of the small group of allies that are privately discussing the terms of how the war might end.

She also agrees with the US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, that Russia must end the war so weakened militarily that it cannot repeat its threats not only to Ukraine but to Moldova and the Baltic states.

For good measure there would have to be reparations – a payment to Ukraine for the damage Moscow had inflicted – in an echo of the principles followed by allied forces against Germany in 1919: punishment, payment and prevention.

These terms may not end up as humiliating as the notorious Versailles peace treaty of that year, but they would leave little room for doubt that Putin had lost. The UK has long said that not only must Putin fail in his war, he must also be seen to fail.

Ukrainian officials have condemned Russia’s missile attack on Kyiv Thursday night, which occurred as the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was finishing a visit to the Ukrainian capital.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his daily video message, said that "Today, immediately after the end of our talks [with Guterres] in Kyiv, Russian missiles flew into the city. 5 missiles. This says a lot about Russia's true attitude to global institutions, about the Russian leadership's efforts to humiliate the UN and everything that the organization represents. And therefore requires an appropriate, powerful response."

Ukrainian prosecutors have brought the first criminal charges against Russian soldiers accused of torturing civilians in the town of Bucha, where hundreds of people died during a brutal one-month occupation.

The country’s chief prosecutor, Iryna Venediktova, announced the charges against ten named members of Russia’s 64th Motorised Infantry Brigade for “cruel treatment of civilians and other violations of laws and customs of war”.

Venediktova said the soldiers took unarmed civilians as hostages, deprived them of food and water, forced them on to their knees with their hands tied and their eyes covered in tape, and beat them with fists and gun butts. They also performed mock executions to try to extract information about the location of Ukrainian military forces.

hast du da nicht den kontext vergessen,

jungs, versucht doch einfach zu diskutieren, keine ahnung was ich mit euren in teilen peinlichen angriffen hier anfangen soll. ich lehne waffenlieferungen ab, bin ich jetzt ein verbrecher? ich sehe in waffenlieferungen keinen sinn und möchte diesen krieg nicht verlängern. warum werde ich hier jetzt ständig beschimpft? ertragt ihr keine andere meinung?
