Cryptocurrency exchange Cryex secured a US$10 million investment led by White Star Capital and Northzone Ventures in the first week of May. Following the multi-million dollar funding round, the Bitcoin startup plans to expand throughout Europe and introduce tier-one financial services to connect traditional regulated financial markets to the “blockchain economy.”

Managing Partner at White Star Capital, Eric Martineau-Fortin, explained that the investment into Cryex will allow the Bitcoin startup to pull “financial institutions into the digital currency ecosystem.”

Martineau-Fortin showed strong enthusiasm for Cryex’s experienced financial industry team, with banking and exchange executives and investment and asset management veterans. He stated:

“We are delighted to be involved in delivering a truly innovative solution where Blockchain technology meets tier one exchange and clearing technology in a regulated environment, finally attracting financial institutions into the digital currencies ecosystem.”

Tether Integrates with Cryptsy Expanding its ‘Digitized Dollar’ Service

Tether recently announced its integration with the cryptocurrency exchange, Cryptsy, expanding its digitized dollar service.
Digital dollars on the blockchain

Tether is the first blockchain-enabled platform to allow traditional currency to be used like the US dollar. Now, it can now be used on Cryptsy allowing users to deposit US dollars, which are “tethered” and converted into a 1-to-1 fiat-backed currency called USDT.

Tether’s latest fusion with Cryptsy allows its customers to transact with dollars across the exchange without the volatility concerns related to bitcoin.

"We're excited to have such an innovative and disruptive approach to digital currency integrated with our platform," said Paul Vernon, CEO at Project Investors, Inc., the company which manages Cryptsy. He added:

"Being able to connect the Blockchain to Tether's fiat-backed digital currency provides a level of stability and reassurance not previously seen in this sector."

MAY 14 DIGEST: US Ends Domestic NSA Spying, Soundcloud Welcomes Bitcoin Tipping for Music Artists

US House of Representatives ends NSA bulk spying

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill aiming to end the bulk collection of data by the NSA. Called the USA Freedom Act, its contents stop what whistle-blower Edward Snowden has called the NSA Dragnet. Although those in the US might now be free from their data being collected, the bill continues to allow the collection of data on people outside of the US. The USA Freedom Act now needs to be passed by the US Senate.

“The USA Freedom Act is seen as a big victory for privacy and civil rights advocates. The White House backs the reforms, saying the bill protects privacy while preserving essential national security authorities. The measure now heads for a vote in the Senate, where the clash between reformists and supporters of the intelligence community, coming within the context of warnings on the increasing digital reach of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, transcends party lines.”

Was für ein Potenzial :)

News Flash: 80% of Russians Haven't Heard of Bitcoin

With the recent downward spiral of the ruble (the fiat money printed by Central Bank of Russia), some have wondered whether Russians are flocking to bitcoins to save their wealth.

Some of them are, as this year's highly-sponsored CoinFest Russia showed. But the conference's attendees represented a minority of Russians: an April 2015 survey shows that a full 80 % have never heard of Bitcoin or cryptocurrency.

The survey, reported by RBC Russia, indicates that only 4 % of Russians said they understood cryptocurrency “well,” while the remaining 16 % who'd heard of it did so through “hearsay.”

The 45 % of Russians who reported using “electronic purses” (which I'm guessing means mobile payment systems) were more likely to have heard of cryptocurrency than those who didn't. Those who used mobile banking (29 %) or sent remittances (36 %) were also more likely to have heard of it.

And what of the alleged “ban” of cryptocurrency by state actors in Russia?

It would appear that – like all prohibited goods – if people want them, they'll get them. When a CryptoCoinsNews article reported on the pseudo-ban earlier this year, a Russian reader left a comment on the article stating:

“We do not care for ban. We'll move on. Welcome to Russia to #CoinFestRussia.”

Chip Chap Users Can Now Buy Bitcoin at 5,000 Mexican Stores

A full list of Mexican vendors, which range from La Mission to 7-Eleven, can be found on the Paynet website. Users generate a barcode using Chip Chap and then the app will lead them to the closest shop to redeem their bitcoins.

Chip Chap supports a range of payment systems and vouchers, such as Bitcoin, Ukash, or Paynet. A smartphone and a connection is all that's required to make the conversions between them. So far, the app supports payment systems that work in Spain, France, England, and Mexico. Chip Chap can be used at a total of 400,000 stores worldwide—stores that accept any of the payment systems. Furthermore, these vouchers don't require a bank account or a credit card to use, giving users pseudo-privacy.

In Spain and Poland, once users have converted into their payment system of choice, the Android app leverages a network of existing ATMs that accept the vouchers, so that users can cash out of bitcoin at the ATMs. That's one reason Darkwallet recently partnered up with the app.

BTC zu bezahlen, ZEIT!!!!  Sehr, sehr viel ZEIT!!!

Uber has recently launched a pilot program providing a cash payment option for rides in Hyderabad, India. After making its debut in the country exactly one year ago it has already expanded to 10 cities.

The Indian radio taxi services market is pegged to be worth anywhere between US$6 - 9 billion by different estimates, and is forecasted to grow at 17-20% annually. The move by Uber India is regarded by many in the industry as smart in the short term due to the cash savvy nature of consumers

It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses, however, for Uber India, which recently ran into regulatory hurdles with the central bank after objections to its payment authentication system. This issue was dealt with by the integration of the mobile wallet service PayTM, now a mandatory payment option (for all Uber customers in India).

The company also received complaints from the Radio Taxi Owners Association, stating that Uber is remitting foreign exchange out of India, bypassing RBI’s e-payment laws. The association stated that money charged was routed to a Holland-based Uber account near Amsterdam, from where it is further transferred to a U.S. Wells Fargo account.

"Only after seven days does 80% of the money paid reache a driver’s account in India."

With payments being in murky waters at the moment, the members of the Bitcoin India Alliance (BIA) shared their views on the benefits of using bitcoin as an equally effective alternative.

Vishal Gupta of the SearchCoin Network mentioned that If Uber were to work with bitcoin instead of cash or a digital wallet it could allow international travelers to use and pay through Uber app seamlessly across borders. Gupta said:

“It would take away the headache of converting currency at expensive rates which airport counters offer. This can save both time and money for frequent travellers.”

While Sandeep Goenka of Zebpay added:

“India is the ideal country for them as a company to accept bitcoins. Companies like Uber are bringing the future of urban transport to India; it would only make sense for them to accept the future of payment systems as well. Our economy is already struggling with archaic payment systems, and while regulation is promoting security over convenience, bitcoin truly brings together the best of both worlds.”

BitFinance of Zimbabwe Becomes Savannah Fund’s First Bitcoin-Related Investment

The fourth Savannah Fund accelerator class is underway. BitFinance, a bitcoin exchange in Zimbabwe, is one of four startups selected from a list of over 150 applications from across Africa. They will receive a seed fund of between $25K and $30K, as well as the opportunity to present at a demo day set for the end of July.

Savannah Fund is a seed capital fund based in Nairobi Kenya. They invest in early-stage, high-growth technology (web and mobile) startups in sub-Saharan Africa. The fund has invested in about 20 startups in 6 countries (Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe) in the three years it has been in existence.

Individual investors behind Savannah Fund include Mbwana Alliy — an East African with Silicon Valley investment experience — and Erik Hersman, who is also the co-founder of Ushahidi, a platform that allows users to share news and data through text messages.

Savannah Fund
Seasoned Investors

Paul Bragiel of i/o Ventures and Tim Draper of Draper Fisher Jurvetson are also among the investors. Draper is best known for investing in tech companies such as Skype, Twitter and ShareThis. He also purchased nearly 30,000 bitcoins through a public auction in June 2014 that was held by the U.S. Marshals after the government seized the bitcoins from Silk Road.

Savannah Fund has had bitcoin at close range from as early as 2013. The company organizes annual Afrikoin events and conferences on Bitcoin and digital currencies, bringing together experts, investors and enthusiasts from around the African continent.

Despite showing a two-year interest in cryptocurrency, Savannah Fund accepted no bitcoin startups in previous accelerator classes.
Savannah Is Ready for Bitcoin

CoinTelegraph spoke to Alliy, a managing partner of the fund, who said they think it is better to take time to study the technology before putting money into it. The Fund is now ready to explore the sector, with BitFinance leading the way. Alliy said:

“BitFinance interests us because it seeks to solve real issues people are facing. For instance, in Zimbabwe consumers have to deal with up to 13 legal tenders, which bring the challenge of changing from one to another. We are also happy with the team behind the startup. They are local individuals grounded in the technology."

    #11087
15.05.15 08:16
Since its creation in 2009, bitcoin's blockchain has proved that value can be moved across a network that cuts out the traditional 'middle men'.

While the broad strokes of distributed ledger technologies like bitcoin are a hot topic, it's not just Wall Street or multi-national corporations that are paying attention.

Artists are also exploring how the experimental technology can provide new ways to track and verify ownership through tools like smart contracts – authenticated by cryptographic data.
Blockchain authentication

Stephan Vogler, an artist and entrepreneur based in Germany, thinks the blockchain may be the answer to the art world's perennial problem, authenticity.

Forgery is rife in the art world. While traditional forms of licensing would create a tradable commodity, he said, buyers could not be certain the license was authentic – nor would they be able to assert whether the author had created multiple copies of the piece.

"Bitcoin offers a solution to this problem. Just like bitcoin can replace banknotes, it can replace the piece of paper with the license text on it. I see great potential in bitcoin and its technology."

He continued: "The blockchain is the first decentralised trustable database, which can track the ownership of virtual properties in a reliable way."

Bitcoin Capital Attracts Over 300 Investors and $500,000 in First Week After $700 Million of Venture Capital Funds Invested in Bitcoin Businesses

Cayman Islands, May 14, 2015 at 19:06 BST
bitcoin capital

A new fund, managed by Max Keiser and Simon Dixon, has been launched on equity CrowdFunding platform BnkToTheFuture.com that allows investors to benefit from the growth of the Crypto Currency sector.

The price of Bitcoin is down, yet professional investors are flocking to Bitcoin businesses. Last week a group of investors led by Goldman Sachs invested $50m in Bitcoin startup - Circle, after another group invested $75m into Bitcoin exchange - Coinbase, including an investment from the New York Stock Exchange, bringing the total reported venture capital investment into the sector to over $700m and forecasted to surpass one billion dollars shortly.

A new fund has been launched on equity CrowdFunding platform BnkToTheFuture.com that allows investors to benefit from the growth of the Crypto Currency sector.

The new fund, called Bitcoin Capital will be managed by financial journalist, virtual currency inventor, entrepreneur and investor Max Keiser, and Simon Dixon, an ex-investment banker, investor, entrepreneur and co-founder of Bnk To The Future.

Aimed at investors that want to invest small and large sums into the crypto currency sector, Bitcoin Capital is not only a venture capital fund that aims to invest in the highest growth startups in the Blockchain, Crypto and Bitcoin sector, but the fund also offers investors the ability to accumulate daily dividends paid out in Bitcoin.

Traditionally investing in venture capital is a patient game, taking years for companies to mature and be sold or float on a stock market to offer investors a high risk, high return investment. To combat this, Bitcoin Capital is able to pay investors daily dividends by investing one third of all funds raised into a process called Bitcoin mining. Bitcoin mining involves investing in sophisticated hardware that provides security to the Bitcoin network in return for newly created Bitcoins. Because new Bitcoins are created every ten minutes, Bitcoin Capital is using these newly created Bitcoins to pay investors daily dividends while investors wait for the funds in venture capital investments to mature.

The fund also invests in a portfolio of Bitcoin and other digital tokens and crypto currencies to give investors full exposure to the growth of what is now being called the ‘Blockchain sector’, named due to the fact that more and more companies are making use of the technology that underpins Bitcoin - the Blockchain.

Since the fund launched on equity CrowdFunding platform BnkToTheFuture.com  has attracted over 250 investors and will continue to raise funds for a further 30 days. Investors that are new to the sector can invest small from as little as $100 and use Bitcoin Capital as a very easy way to start accumulating Bitcoins, while learning more about the sector by using the currency and other Blockchain technologies themselves.

BitCharities to Open new Opportunities for Philanthropy with Bitcoin

New York, NY, May 14, 2015 at 17:35 BST

BitCharities is launching this month to open the doors to exciting new opportunities for philanthropy, thanks to Bitcoin.

In the recent months, Bitcoin has become a philanthropic currency. Like Bitcoin, social good doesn't have geographical boundaries, nor should it be limited by donation fees. To help those two communities come together, bitLanders.com has launched bitCharities.com, with the mission to educate their 500,000 users and the world about Bitcoin, and bring non-profits to the world of digital currency.

By providing a user-friendly platform where digital citizens of all income levels can donate to charities using Bitcoin, bitCharities’ goal is to bring social responsibility opportunities to millions of people all over the world. On bitCharities, anyone can support a charity of their choice with micro-donations as low as 10 satoshis (1/500 of a cent).

BitLanders users can also show support to their favorite non-profit organization through their avatar, with free accessories carrying the logos of the foundations. bitLanders and bitCharities make donating fun, as donors are rewarded with Bonuses, to further earn more Bitcoin, and continue supporting their favorite charities.

So far, more than 20 leading non-profits have joined bitCharities, including Action Against Hunger, Americares, or GMRF, currently triggering about 7,000 donations per day. You can see a list of all the charities at http://www.bitlanders.com/pages/top_charities and donate at www.bitcharities.com.

Introducing the Community’s First True Crypto Debit Card, Issued and Processed by MasterCard

Belize, May 14, 2015 at 16:33 BST

BIT-X is proud to announce the official release of its Bitcoin Debit MasterCard, the community's first true Crypto debit card, issued and processed by MasterCard and BIT-X's bank partner.

The BIT-X MasterCard can be used to shop online, pay for goods and services, and withdraw cash at ATMs worldwide using any of a user’s balances in the form of BTC, LTC, USD, EUR or GBP.

Cards are denominated in either USD or EUR and can be shipped anywhere in the world. Similarly, they can be used anywhere in the world where MasterCardTM is accepted; at ATMs, and point of sale (POS) and online vendors. No verification is necessary to begin using the card. User side verification will allow for higher card limits.

There is no need to manually fund cards for each use as funds are situated directly in a user's BIT-X wallet. Once the card is used, Bitcoins are exchanged. These funds are not exchanged before hand, not after but at the time of the transaction, at the current market exchange rate. Price volatility is no longer an issue!

For more information on the BIT-X MasterCard please visit the following: https://card.bit-x.com

The ‘Underbanked’

Companies involved in the world of digital currency are increasingly seeing customers in the developing world as a strong potential market. Proposals range from low-cost remittance services to innovative mobile payment networks, as they often try to revolutionize how people transact.

Now, however, rather than trying to always turn this sector on its head, a second wave of these startups is looking at ways to work alongside existing financial services while taking advantage of digital currencies.

Their target customers are the world's “underbanked.” In 2013, the World Bank found that around 2.5 billion adults (55% of the world's 4.5 billion people over the age of 15) fall under this “underbanked” category.

These individuals were seen to “lack access to formal financial services, limiting their ability to benefit from economic opportunities, improve their health and education, and raise their income levels,” creating a self-fulfilling cycle that's hard to break out of.

The way in which digital currency startups can make a difference in the space therefore, is by providing the financial services that these people lack. By increasing an individual's ability to send, receive and even invest funds, these financial services can give the user a prospect of a better financial future.

Bitcoinist.net Launches Garza-Owned BTC.com, Plans to Create ‘Industry Portal’

The Bitcoin news website Bitcoinist LTD has signed a private long-term lease agreement for the “million-dollar domain” BTC.com. The lease with GAW Miners goes until March 2018.

Controversy regarding the connection between BTC.com and Josh Garza, CEO of GAW, brewed over Reddit, as Bitcoinist briefly and quietly mentioned Garza’s ownership of the BTC.com domain name in their original press release. One redditor said,

“If they were smart they would have had [a response regarding Garza’s ownership] prepared well before launch. They also wouldn't have published an article to advertise one of Josh's scams recently.”

The BTC.com team launched the new platform yesterday, which features Bitcoin statistics (hash rate, market cap, difficulty, etc.), events, learning centers, leasable subdomains, and news and reviews covering the digital currency industry.
