Nvidia NVDA, reported Wednesday that a huge boost in its data-center business meant that revenue from server chips outpaced its gaming business for the first time in the second quarter. With both data centers and videogaming fueled by the work-from-home trend in the ongoing global pandemic, Nvidia is in a sweet spot with both of those businesses.
“We find ourselves really in this perfect condition, where the future is going to be more virtual, more digital,” Nvidia co-founder and Chief Executive Jensen Huang told analysts on a conference call...."

"....NVIDIA has already laid the groundwork for years of further advance, though. We are witnessing a massive changing of the guard in the semiconductor industry, and NVIDIA is quickly emerging as the new leader in the space. It's technologically more advanced, has a nimble balance sheet, and generates lots of cash to further strengthen its leadership. The takeover and seamless integration of Mellanox in the second quarter could be just the beginning.
...CEO Jensen Huang said his company didn't see any pull-forward of revenue in the quarter due to the pandemic. On the contrary, professional visualization sales dipped 30% from last year to $203 million, with many design and manufacturing professions closed down, and the auto segment fell 47% to $111 million. The data center unit -- which grew 167% year over year to $1.75 billion -- got a big boost from Mellanox. Over 30%, or $526 million, of data center sales were attributable to Mellanox. Backing that out, data center sales grew a more "modest" 87%.
Professional visualization and auto were forecast to be roughly even in the next quarter. Data center growth is also expected to ease, but the upcoming holiday shopping season could be the strongest ever for the video game industry. Huang thus said growth is more closely tied to a new hardware upgrade cycle in gaming, as well as upgrades for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. This upgrade cycle is just getting started...
I'm certainly not arguing that shares will continue to increase unabated. .... But that's the name of the game with the cyclical semiconductor industry. Nevertheless, NVIDIA is quickly taking over as the chip company to beat. Rather than try to time a pullback, I'm holding on to what I have and will be ready to buy more."
Quick highlights
AMD’s overall unit shipments increased by 8.4% quarter-to-quarter, Intel’s total shipments decreased by -2.7% from last quarter, and Nvidia’s increased by 17.8%.
Typically, the second quarter is down compared to the previous quarter. This quarter was up as the influence of the pandemic has had unpredictable market effects.....
Investors in NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA - Free Report) need to pay close attention to the stock based on moves in the options market lately. That is because the Sep 18, 2020 $220.00 Put had some of the highest implied volatility of all equity options today.

"The chipmaker is in advanced talks with SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY) to acquire ARM Holdings (OTC:ARMHF) , a software design company. The move will prove instrumental in morphing Nvidia into a software company, rather than a simple chipmaker. In my last piece on Nvidia, I noted that its acquisition of Mellanox has reduced Nvidia’s reliance on its gaming division. So Nvidia has adopted a concerted strategy to widen its focus.
Meanwhile, the company’s second-quarter results beat analysts’ average estimates once again, with every division firing on all cylinders. Every one of the company’s main businesses grew at healthy rates, as its revenue smashed the average estimate, coming in at $3.87 billion...."

"What Happened: The company said in a statement, these second-generation Ampere RTX cards are designed using ray-tracing technology.
The chips for the upcoming launch will be built by Samsung Electronics using its 8nm process as opposed to the first generation of Ampere cards, according to Bloomberg. The first generation used Taiwan Semicon Conductor Mfg Co’s ...Nvidia said its GeForce RTX 30 series uses faster third generation Tensor Cores and new streaming multiprocessors to boost visuals and AI acceleration for gaming. They feature an HDMI 2.1 that supports 4k high refresh rate and 8k gaming.
The top-end model RTX 3090 is priced at $1,499 whereas the base model is $499, and are expected to release later this month."
Nvidia (NVDA) - Get Report shares rose Wednesday as analysts raised their price targets after the semiconductor superstar on Tuesday introduced new gaming chips.
Nvidia shares recently traded at $569.90, up 3.1%. They returned 135% including dividends this year through Tuesday.
Credit Suisse analyst John Pitzer lifted his share-price target for the Santa Clara, Calif., graphics-chip specialist to $620 from $530, affirming an outperform rating.
The new chips will extend gaming growth past the third quarter, with the stay-at-home trend during the coronavirus pandemic providing ballast, he said, according to Bloomberg.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Mitch Steves boosted his share-price target for Nvidia to $610 from $528, keeping an outperform rating.
The new chips will cement Nvidia’s status as a “secular winner in the semiconductor space,” he said according to Bloomberg.
Steves was impressed with the broad range of the new chips along with attractive pricing on them - from $499 to $1,499.
In addition to its long-term strength, “we believe the stock will continue to trade higher near term as well,” he said.
Benchmark analyst Ruben Roy increased his share-price target for Nvidia to $600 from $540, affirming his buy rating.
The Ampere architecture for the chips amounts to a “triple-double,” he said, according to Bloomberg.
That’s because compared with the previous Turing generation, Ampere has three times the number of cores and two times the performance, Roy said.
This amounts to the biggest generational leap in GPU performance in history, he said. That along with the reasonable pricing should give Nvidia a boost, Roy said.
