Soon after announcing Symware to the world, Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin took to the main stage for a keynote address that outlined Rakuten Mobile’s journey, explaining how the cloud-native and Open RAN-based mobile network that many had thought to be impossible, was now in fact outperforming all other mobile network operators in terms of 5G speed experience in Japan.
To an intrigued audience, Amin shared his vision for the future of Rakuten Symphony: “We have a great opportunity to disrupt this industry, we have a great opportunity to really connect everything and bring better value to overall society and Rakuten Symphony is the platform idea for all the software technology stack that we have built into Japan.”
That opportunity to disrupt comes from the years of lessons learned in building the Rakuten Mobile network in Japan, packaged into solutions designed to deliver immediate benefits to the telecom industry.

Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime have plenty of Korean dramas (my heart personally hasn't recovered from Netflix's Crash Landing on You), but if you're looking for a dedicated service for Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese shows and movies. You can watch Viki for free with ads, or subscribe to Viki Pass for $50 per year or Viki Pass Plus for $100 per year. Viki Pass unlocks more shows and movies, presents content in HD quality without ads, as well as first access to exclusives, originals and more.

Revolutionary new symphony for mobile networks premiered this year. The composition began with the construction of Japan’s fourth mobile phone network by Rakuten Mobile, bringing down the price of a local mobile phone subscription by 80 percent. In 2021, that inspiration crescendoed to the global stage with the launch of Rakuten Symphony.
Media around the world respond to Rakuten Symphony
Unveiled in August, Rakuten Symphony has already notched up important international milestones, attracting the attention of major business and industry media:
• Financial Times: Teaming up with Germany’s 1&1 to build Europe’s first Open RAN network
• Wall Street Journal: Dish and Rakuten head to the cloud
• CNBC: Rakuten Symphony sees huge opportunities to take network into the cloud
• Light Reading: Dish Network officially teams up with Rakuten
• Mobile Europe: Rakuten partners 1&1 to build “Europe’s first fully virtualised mobile network”
• Fierce Wireless: Rakuten creates Symphony, expands RCP ambitions
• Appledore Research: Disruption-as-a-Service: Rakuten Symphony Emerges
“Historically, a few large vendors have dominated the business of supplying mobile-network equipment, providing costly proprietary systems in which they control both the hardware and the software. Open RAN networks are completely different: They are software-driven, based on open standards, and run in the cloud on commercial, off-the-shelf servers.”
“The advantages of Open RAN networks are clear. They cost less to run because many of the proprietary infrastructure components are replaced by software, at a fraction of the price. Network operators no longer need large teams of engineers to deploy and maintain their base stations. In our network, new sites are brought on air automatically and updates are carried out remotely via software.”
“Open RAN should be music to the ears of security hawks and those worried about the security implications of trusting a single supplier. Open RAN provides a way to depoliticize the roll-out of 5G. It gives operators complete transparency within their networks, tight control throughout the supply chain and the freedom to quickly move from one vendor to the next should ever a security issue arise.”
“More affordable connectivity will cause an industrial shake-up in the coming years. Instead of proprietary systems built by a handful of incumbents, Open RAN offers new suppliers, both large and small, the opportunity to get into the mobile infrastructure market. Our network relies on equipment from a range of suppliers, including radio-access technology from Nokia, routers and switches from Cisco, and other hardware from NEC. The software was provided by Altiostar (recently acquired by Rakuten) and Robin.io.”

Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin earlier this year pledged to be transparent about the cost of network hardware, but that doesn’t mean he’s publicly sharing those prices. This level of transparency extends to Rakuten Symphony customers and ends there, he explained in a recent phone interview.
“If I share my component prices with the world, then my suppliers will most likely sue. But with my customers I have all the rights and all the authorities, because I have a legal framework of a contract, so I share my pricing and my entire cost structure with all the customers that sign contractually with Rakuten Symphony,” he said.
Rakuten Symphony, a newly formed corporation following a formal split from its Rakuten parent, claims contracts with at least 14 customers worth about $2.6 billion to date, including Germany’s greenfield operator 1&1 Drillisch.

HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach - 14 December 2021 - Carousell, one of the world's largest and fastest growing classifieds marketplaces, today announced new partnerships with GOGOX, the pioneer app-based logistics platform in Asia, and Atome, Asia's leading buy now pay later brand to help small local businesses via Carousell for Business (CarouBiz). Combining Carousell's reach of 1 in 5 Hong Kongers as active users with ready buyer intent, and the established expertise of partners, Carousell aims to build an ecosystem that enables small local businesses to succeed.
Unlike large corporations who can hire the necessary talent, smaller merchants need easy-to-use, affordable tools and "plug-and-play" services that allow them to scale at low cost and without a lot of training. Demand for CarouBiz subscriptions of premium seller tools have increased sharply in Hong Kong in 2021 compared to last year. In Q4 2021, Carousell also rolled out a self-serve version of CarouBiz for tech-savvier merchants who do not require a dedicated Client Success Manager to advise on marketing strategies.
Carousell is the leading classifieds group in Greater Southeast Asia on a mission to inspire the world to start selling, and to make secondhand the first choice. Founded in August 2012 in Singapore, the group has a leading presence in eight markets under the brands Carousell, Mudah.my, Cho Tot, OneKyat and Ox Street, serving tens of millions of monthly active users. Carousell is backed by leading investors, including Telenor Group, Rakuten Ventures, Naver, STIC Investments and Sequoia Capital India.

Striking a balance between a customer's lifetime value and acquisition costs is critical to generating sustainable profitability. To this end, digital banks affiliated with a technology platform have a strong advantage. Besides acquiring users affordably, these digital banks can maintain a high engagement level with users as banking services are often synergistic with their parent's native business.
Tokyo-based Rakuten Group Inc., for instance, operates a stand-alone credit card unit and offers incentives to users who pay off their card balance with a Rakuten bank account. This contributed to 32% year-over-year growth in the bank's number of direct debit transactions and a subsequent 50.4% year-over-year increase in the number of users choosing Rakuten Bank Ltd. as their payroll bank in the first quarter of 2021.

In late 2018, Rakuten Ichiba consolidated its vast catalog of ethical products under a single roof with the launch of Earth Mall with Rakuten. After three years in business, Earth Mall shoppers can now choose from some 120,000 sustainable products, navigating via search or product category or browsing certification labels like Fair Trade, the Rainforest Alliance, GOTS and RSPO.
Shoppers are clearly taking notice. Over the first nine months of 2021, Earth Mall with Rakuten shoppers bought four times more than they did over the same period the previous year, while traffic jumped by a factor of almost five.
As awareness of sustainable topics such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals grows, more Japanese consumers are asking themselves, just how does one shop sustainably?
