The UK Government has announced the winners of a competition to provide funding to projects with and Open RAN focus.
The Future Radio Access Network Competition (FRANC ) has granted a total of £36 million to 15 projects consortia, containing a wide array of network, IT and other companies.
The winners were announced on the same day as the Government said that it had agreed with UK MNOs an ambition to carry 35% of network traffic over networks with an “open and interoperable architecture” by 2030. If that looks like a vague and non-mandated promise, then the trials represent a more direct intervention, with money directly headed to many British companies and institutions. Of course the commercial impact of research outcomes is another matter.
The UK already has an ongoing Testbeds and Trials programme, so this is additional trial activity on top of that programme. A Government statement said that the FRANC winners would, “develop technical solutions – such as radio transmitters, signal processing equipment, power management systems and the software – required to roll out open RAN solutions across the UK quickly and attract new home-grown telecoms suppliers to the 5G supply chain.”

Effective December 27, 2021, the broker will release MT4 Web, which will allow FX and CFD trading via a web browser. Rakuten clients can use the platform without installation, which is one of its biggest advantages over the traditional desktop version.
MT4 Web provides fans of technical analysis with access to 30 types of technical indicators. The supported orders include Limit / Stop Order, IFD / IDO order, as well as One-click order.
Rakuten Securities also offers trading on the MARKETSPEED platform. In May 2021, the broker bolstered the performance of its desktop trading platform MARKETSPEED II by upgrading the servers for the platform. In particular, the number of servers supporting the platform has been increased.
Thanks to the upgrade, the response time when updating the screen has been reduced. Also, response times for chart transitioning have been improved. Especially when trading is crowded, the response at the time of closing is improved, and a more comfortable trading environment is thus provided.

„At the end of September, Rakuten Mobile had over 30,000 4G base stations on air, up from 17,560 as of March. Yoshihisa Yamada, president of Rakuten Mobile, said another 10,000 base stations are ready to go on air and are awaiting delivery of semiconductor components. Population coverage is another focus, where Rakuten’s 4G in Japan currently stands at 94.3%, with a target of 96% coverage by next spring. That’s later than the original target of this summer, which Yamada said was delayed because of global supply shortages.
Still, he noted that with progress on the buildout, Rakuten is now importantly ready to make inroads in switching off users from its roaming partner KDDI and onto its own network. The move started gradually in October, shifting to Rakuten’s network from KDDI in 39 prefectures.“

Rakuma and Rakuten Mama-Wari are bringing sustainability closer to home
9 hours ago
Adorable kids’ clothing can pile up, as almost any parent will tell you. But the temptation to amass the cutest wardrobe for your child quickly turns to questions like, “What are we going to do with all these clothes?” And toys. And strollers, cribs… the list goes on. One other thing parents can tell you: Little kids grow up fast.
According to recent research by Rakuma, Rakuten’s flea market app, two out of three users reported that they started using the app to buy and sell items more frequently during the pandemic, when dashing out to physical stores wasn’t an option. With the “Kids/Babies/Maternity” category entering the Top 10 categories on Rakuma, it’s clear that many families are turning to the app to help stretch every yen.
Raising kids the sustainable way
Buying and selling used items on circular economy apps like Rakuma does more than just make shoppers’ wallets happy. These transactions also repurpose items that might otherwise be destined for the landfill, benefitting the planet as well. It brings sustainability closer to home.
Digging a little deeper, among those who responded that they reuse items they no longer want or need using flea market apps or dedicated “recycle shops,” 84.1% revealed that they buy and sell clothing, including children’s clothes. If that number doesn’t seem significant enough on its own, bear in mind that as of September 2021, Rakuma’s Kids/Babies/Maternity category had over six million items for sale!
Supporting parents across Japan:“Rakuten Mama-Wari”
No matter how sustainably-minded a parent might be, some items simply can’t be sourced second-hand. For the budget and time-conscious parents in Japan, Rakuten has a special membership program, called “Rakuten Mama-Wari,” or “Rakuten Mom Discount.” Signing up and using the program is free of charge, and of course, papas are more than welcome too.
Simply by entering their child’s birthday (or expected date of birth), parents can look forward to exclusive monthly discount coupons. And that’s not all. One of the most popular perks is the “sample box,” a complimentary selection of goods chosen by Rakuten Mama-Wari staff on a monthly basis. The boxes are available in three variations — including one tier for parents who are still in the “expecting” stage — and contain items for moms and dads as well as little ones.
What’s more, Rakuten Mama-Wari members are also entitled to bonus Rakuten Points when shopping for daily necessities on Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper or Rakuten Fashion — the kind of ecosystem-focused incentive only Rakuten can offer.
The Rakuten Ecosystem: A busy parent’s best friend
For a first-hand perspective, Rakuten Today spoke to Aiko Oyo, a mother and full-time Rakuten employee who is an expert Rakuten Mama-Wari user, earning nearly 100,000 Rakuten Points annually.
As the mother of two small children, Oyo is constantly pressed for time. In the mornings, it’s a mad dash to drop the kids off at nursery school before heading into the office, and in the evenings, she’s got dinner prep, baths and bedtime to contend with.
Rather than trying to fit trips to the grocery store into the mix, Oyo turns to Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper once or twice a week, having everything from rice and vegetables to ready-made meal kits and cleaning supplies delivered straight to her door, earning bonus points through her Rakuten Mami-Wari membership.
For preschool essentials like training pants or bathing suits, Oyo knows that department stores are an option, but she saves time — and stress — by finding everything she needs online, through Rakuten Fashion.
For local brick and mortar stores, like her favorite bakery, she points out how convenient it’s become to use Rakuten Pay, with so many retailers offering the option. She doesn’t even have to take out her wallet — she just opens the Rakuten Pay app and taps her smartphone. It’s a small difference, but lowers the hurdle of shopping with kids enough to be appreciated.
When asked how to enjoy the parenting experience with minimal stress, Oyo allowed that there are times when keeping a level head is challenging. She recommends baking extra time into daily schedule planning and reminds us of the importance of a getting a good night’s sleep — solid advice for anyone, whether a parent or not.

Rakuten has been dragged through the mud for the past few years. However, we are getting to a point in time where the end is in sight and long-term investors can see through the storm at a great asset being sold at a bargain price. We rate the company a Buy with a price target of ¥2234.

If there’s one constant in business today, it’s the pressure to move faster. Can we speed a product to market? Can we rush delivery? Can we get the app to load faster?
At Rakuten, operating effectively at speed has always been fundamental to our growth. In fact, one of our founding principles for success is simply: Speed!! Speed!! Speed!!
The reality is that our fast-changing business world requires an understanding of three very different, essential forms of speed, as well as the human context required to achieve them.
Velocity, acceleration and agility
The first type of speed that must be present in any organizational setting is velocity. In other words, a constant level of speed that allows us to grow on our current path.
The second is acceleration. This is when we speed up and move faster, gaining momentum as we go.
The third is agility.
Let’s look more closely at agility. Our organization may be moving one way, but what if the situation changes or we change our mind and need to quickly change direction? As an organization grows larger, change gets harder. Regardless of the size of your team, environments and technologies change and the path to success can shift.
A company that can respond with agility survives. Take the much-analyzed case of the camera film industry for instance — Kodak vs. Fujifilm. After dominating the industry for almost a century, Kodak struggled because it stuck with film. On the other hand, Fujifilm adapted its own advanced imaging technology to diversify into healthcare, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Film is only a small part of its business now. Kodak lacked agility and faced bankruptcy as a result.
So how to build an organization that can pursue all three types of speed?
https://rakuten.today/blog/speed-the-human-context.html
On the competition side, while the number of active European AVOD services used to grow at a slow pace prior to 2019, the market expanded significantly in 2020 with the launch of 15 new services, and this evolution was also confirmed in the first semester of 2021. These trends can be explained by two main factors. First, a growing number of US services have started to enter the European market, to diversify their revenue stream while they were becoming more mature in their domestic market: Pluto TV, Discovery Plus, Tubi or Facebook Watch and many others are now widely available in Europe and account for a growing share of the AVOD space. Secondly, the content offer and its curation have expanded tremendously both with the launch of new European actors like Watch4, Rakuten TV Free, Filmstream or Joyn, and with the increasing amount of aggregated content available by platform, providing alternatives to traditional BVOD offers, which have captured the major share of traffic and revenues after Youtube.
