Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Rakuten has been able to build the network quickly by using virtualised techniques, said CEO Mickey Mikitani (pictured) as a press conference.
“Less than six months since full-scale commercial launch of the world’s first fully virtualised mobile network, today Rakuten Mobile takes another step forward to transform the mobile industry: we’re offering customers 4G and 5G combined in one simple plan – Rakuten Un-Limit V – at the same low price as 4G,” said Mikitani.
UK based commentator Dean Bubley commented that Rakuten is following India’s Reliance Jio in undercutting incumbent mobile operators “with a greenfield/low-cost infrastructure and lightweight organisation”.
He warned: “If I was a legacy MNO elsewhere in the world, I’d be nervously looking at my strategy team (and advisors) right now. What happens when Rakuten pitches its platform internationally? Could it directly enter our [the UK] market?”
Rakuten will charge 2,980 yen (US$28) a month for unlimited data services on 4G/5G, less than half what is charged by NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank.

Rakuten (formerly Ebates)
Rakuten is an even larger cash back platform with the world’s largest selection of products and services. It also offers special coupons and rebates at major retailers like Target, Apple, and Amazon. Rakuten has saved its members over $1 billion dollars to date, and you can be a part of the savings as well with your Walmart purchases.
If you shop at Walmart.com, you can very easily earn as much as 5% cash back on your purchases through Rakuten. Before you shop, simply search for Walmart in the Rakuten app or site, hit the red button that says “shop now,” and it will redirect you to the Walmart.com home page.

Rakuten has previously said it expects to spend around $5.4 billion constructing its 4G network and another $1.8 billion upgrading to 5G. The company has so far deployed 4,738 4G basestations and eventually hopes to deploy 45,000 4G basestations and some 35,000 5G ones to cover 96% of the Japanese population.
Rakuten's pending 5G launch will essentially cap the operator's transition from an ecommerce giant into a mobile network operator. But that doesn't represent the company's end goal.
Next up for the company is the launch of its Rakuten Communications Platform (previously referred to as the Rakuten Mobile Platform). The platform stretches from the software powering its 4G and 5G antennas to the OSS and BSS systems handling its customer billing and activation systems to its edge computing and autonomous network management functions. Rakuten plans to sell the platform worldwide.
Company officials this week said Rakuten expects to have a RCP "proof of concept" launched by the third quarter of this year. The company believes customers will include enterprises, government agencies and mobile network operators – both new and old, and small and big – will be interested in purchasing its RCP.

Over 50% of Denver consumers will be looking at online retailers like you to help them complete their holiday shopping lists. Can your business handle the influx of customers? Whether it’s prepping your site to manage increased traffic or hiring seasonal workers to manage the fulfillment and shipping process, recruiting the right help for the holidays is crucial. It’s unlikely your previous in-house fulfillment methods will continue to work in the coming 2020 holiday season. As we’ve seen in trends throughout the year, many retailers have skyrocketed by selling unique products and tripled their customer base. Holiday sales will likely increase the pressure eCommerce sellers already feel. In turn, limited assistance will lead to late deliveries, wrong orders, missed deadlines, and very angry customers.
All of these pain points are easily avoidable with the right help. In addition to seasonal staff, you also want to consider working with a professional shipping company to handle your logistics. Whether it’s shipping, fulfillment, warehousing, or returns, a third-party logistics company like Rakuten Super Logistics can take care of all your needs. Let an experienced professional handle the heavy burden of shipping and ensure you achieve 100% accuracy on every order.
Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL) is the leader in eCommerce order fulfillment services and freight brokerage. RSL offers national fulfillment services and a network of 15 US fulfillment centers located in Anaheim (CA), Atlanta (GA), Austin (TX), Chicago (IL), Denver (CO), Houston (TX), Las Vegas (NV), Miami (FL), Olean (NY), Reno (NV), Salt Lake City (UT), and Scranton (PA). Their state-of-the-art technology allows for integration with popular shopping cart platforms and online marketplaces including Amazon, Big Commerce, Channel Advisor, eBay, Magento, ShipStation, Shopify, Volusion, Walmart Marketplace, and WooCommerce.
RSL offers modern fulfillment solutions for leading eCommerce retailers focused on reducing shipping costs, improving order accuracy, decreasing shipping times, and increasing customer satisfaction

„I believe Kobo does a better job at innovating with their hardware and software, than Amazon. Kobo takes risks, they are not afraid to make mistakes, and have went from a scrappy little Canadian company, into a global superpower. If there is any mainstream e-reading company to use color e-paper in a new product, it will be Kobo and not Amazon.“

Kobo is doing very brisk business thanks to the global pandemic. Chapters Indigo, the largest bookselling chain in Canada closed 210 of their retail locations a couple of months ago. Barnes and Noble shuttered 500 in the US, and this has been a boon for Kobo.
“The initial surge of sales we saw in the early weeks of pandemic have continued and even accelerated,” said Michael Tamblyn, the CEO of Kobo. “In all our key markets, including Canada and the United States, our sales are up between 35% and 130% over last year.”

Telecom Rakuten Mobile has introduced a new 5G smartphone for the Japanese market that features what the company claims is the first mobile Felica-equipped smartphone with a front camera embedded in the display.
Mobile Felica is a contactless RFID smart card system in Japan that is used primarily as electronic money cards. Felica does not require a battery to operate and is powered by a card reader when the card comes in range of a terminal. When the data transfer is complete, the power shuts off to the card.
The Rakuten Big smartphone contains a 6.9 in organic light emitting diode (OLED) display that is completely notch-less, by embedding the front camera inside the display itself. The phone includes an in-display fingerprint sensor, an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and it is SIM lock free.
The Rakuten Big is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G 5G mobile platform with the Octa-core 2.4 GHz processor. The smartphone features 6 GB of internal memory, a 4,000 mAh lithium ion battery and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 32 megapixel front camera. The four lens artificial intelligence (AI) camera is made up of a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro camera and a depth-sensing camera that can capture moments with the right amount of background blur.

One of the great benefits of Open vRAN is the ecosystem of vendors where each player brings new innovation to the solution. As a pioneer in Open vRAN, we work with a number of partners who provide a positive contribution to the development of open and virtualized mobile networks for operators. One way in which an Open vRAN architecture drives down capital and operational costs is through using commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware from technology providers such as Intel.
Achieving Leaders Board status in the Intel Network Builders partner ecosystem, Altiostar works closely with Intel on network transformation and welcomes today’s announcement of the Intel vRAN Dedicated Accelerator ACC100. Open RAN deployments require low power, cost and latency, and also need the capacity to manage spikes in performance for a range of use cases. This is where the ACC100 shines by offloading and accelerating the computing-intensive process of forward error correction (FEC).
Altiostar Open vRAN software leverages the O-RAN supported BBDev API which allows for FEC acceleration on either Intel FPGA PAC N3000, the Intel vRAN dedicated accelerator ACC100 or in software-only mode. Mobile operators benefit from an architecture that has high availability, ultra-low latency and ease of maintenance.

The 14th Performance Marketing Awards (PMAs) hosted by PerformanceIN, recognises the work of performance marketing leaders across the UK. This year, we’re honoured to receive two wins, the first for our work with Cult Beauty in the Best Managed Affiliate Programme – Enterprise category.
2019 saw three key objectives for Cult Beauty and the affiliate channel: maintaining consistent Year-on-Year (YoY) growth while finding new revenue streams through new customers acquisition and new partnership verticals. Through a collaborative approach with publishers implemented by Rakuten Advertising and strategic recommendations, Cult Beauty achieved +58% YOY growth. The team also formed partnerships with a new era of publishers to create a new revenue stream for the affiliate channel.
The judges cited a “thorough and intelligent approach to power the brand to the next level” as key reasons for the win.

Rakuten Group's quarterly fintech revenue 2010-2020
Published by C. Diep, Sep 1, 2020
In the second quarter of 2020, the fintech sector revenue of the Rakuten Group amounted to around 141.7 billion Japanese yen, up almost 20 percent compared to the second quarter of the previous year. Rakuten offers services such as Rakuten Card, Rakuten Bank, and Rakuten Securities. The company is headquartered in Tokyo, where it was founded in 1997.

Now today, after months of delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Rakuten has finally commercially launched its 5G network, offering customers access to 5G for the same price as its existing plan: around $28. This price is, according to Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani, is around 70% cheaper than those offered by its domestic rivals.
With NTT absorbing DoCoMo, analysts suggest that a major barrier to reducing prices will have been lifted and a price war could be looming on the horizon. If so, this will mean that Rakuten’s radically low-priced 5G-capable plan will be less appealing than initially hoped, with the delay to its rollout meaning that its 5G coverage is not as broad as that of the other operators who launched 5G around a year ago.
Nonetheless, it still remains a very attractive proposition to customers, in part due to its promise of offering free 4G (and now 5G) service for one year to the first three million subscribers to its Un-limit V plan. Rakuten’s 4G network launched in back in April and by July around one million consumers had taken the operator up on this offer, meaning there is presumably still a great deal of free mobile subscriptions available. The operator is rapidly expanding coverage, aiming for 96% of the Japanese population by next summer.
Rakuten is also a major player in the Open RAN space, a fact that was recently acknowledged with a partnership with Telefonica to further develop the technology. If Rakuten’s 5G network is largely successful, additional operators could begin to look more seriously at this emerging technology in future.
