Rakuten Mobile built the world’s first*3 end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network and launched full-scale commercial carrier services on the network in April 2020. The network architecture allows for substantial reductions in capital investment and operating costs, enabling the operator to offer the Rakuten UN-LIMIT V service plan, which includes both 4th generation mobile communications system (4G) and 5G services, for the same monthly fee of 2,980 yen. By leveraging the synergies between 5G and various offerings from the broad portfolio of Rakuten Group businesses to develop engaging new content and services, Rakuten Mobile aims to provide customers with a next-generation mobile experience.

„From its very inception, Rakuten Mobile has made it a priority to do away with complex terms and conditions, offering a single service plan that is simple, intuitive and easy-to-understand for all customers, whether they are in Japan or traveling internationally. The plan — called Rakuten UN-LIMIT 2.0 — launched in April 2020 and offers subscribers unlimited data when connected to the Rakuten Mobile network, and unlimited calls through its communications app Rakuten Link.“

However, Rakuten's low-priced 5G service is currently available only in limited areas in six prefectures including Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido. Customers must also have handsets operable on 5G networks.
Rakuten's mobile phone unit said it plans to expand its own 5G networks across all 47 prefectures in Japan by March.

Q: The affiliate space is certainly competitive. How has Rakuten Advertising managed to stay at the top of the ecosystem and what does it take to succeed long term?
A: It certainly is competitive for all in the affiliate space. Rakuten Advertising has succeeded for so long because we are constantly innovating and finding new ways to serve our partners. This includes a strong focus on strategy and service, technology, and our global publisher network.
We are a true partner to the agencies and brands we work with, ensuring that campaigns are aligned with actual business objectives—whether that is to achieve better margins, focus on new customer acquisition, or improve customer lifetime value.
One thing that we pride ourselves on is the diversity of our publisher network. In recent years, we’ve begun partnering with businesses in sectors that traditionally have not invested as much in affiliate marketing. We have made it a priority to include more publishers that specialize in reaching a diverse set of audiences, as well as increasing the number of influencers and content sites in our network.
Additionally, our financial services compliance team is second to none when it comes to ensuring that our financial advertisers and publishers are minimizing the amount of legal and reputational risk to their brands. This ensures that both sides are protecting existing revenue streams while maximizing the potential of future revenue generating opportunities.
