Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket

Partnerships at Viber
Messaging apps have access to a potential goldmine of advertiser-friendly data, given the access they have to conversations between users, but most users are uncomfortable with the idea of their chats with friends being mined for advertising purposes. Speaking to VAN, messaging app Viber’s VP of global partnerships Cristina Constandache explains how her company monetises its product without dipping into chat logs, and why the mini-ecosystems creates by the likes of China’s WeChat are difficult to replicate in the West.

In total, Rakuten TV is now available in more than 40 countries in Europe, including Spain, where it is headquartered, and France, Germany, Italy and the U.K., where it was already available. Roca said it will set up new offices, likely in Sweden and Poland, to service the new countries in which it has launched. The new territories all went live Wednesday after more than a year of planning and preparation.
The smart-TV collaborations are with Samsung, LG, Philips and Hisense. Each of them add a branded Rakuten TV button to their remote controls in the same way that Netflix has done with manufacturer partners.
In tune with the smart-TV firms, which are seeking to sell 8K sets, Rakuten wants to bring movies in the ultra-high-definition format to its service.

Djamel Agaou: Unlike other messaging apps, we take privacy and security seriously and it is the core of our value proposition to users. Viber can’t read personal chats – including one-on-one chats, group chats, audio and video calls.
We simply can’t access messages since we use end-to-end encryption by default. This means that all private and group communications are completely encrypted so that only users and the people they’re talking to can read or hear them.

In 2018, Viber hit the one billion registered users milestone. In 2017, our user base grew by 20% and our revenue increased by 100%. "

Pinterest pins down $100M in new funding
Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten says it is leading a $100 million round of funding in the social photo-sharing site.
May 16, 2012
Rakuten, which runs the largest e-commerce site in Japan, announced Thursday that it is leading a $100 million round of investment in Pinterest. Participating in the round are existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, along with an unspecified number of angel investors.
Rakuten's portion of the funding is in excess of $50 million, according to All Things D, which first reported the investment news (and at the time thought the round might be as big as $120 million). The new round now values Pinterest at $1.5 billion, ATD says.

"Viki is a combination of 'video' and 'wiki', so combine them and you get Viki," says Kristine Ortiz, the company's senior community manager.
The company, which was originally an independent start-up, was bought for £130m in 2013 by Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten. It now has more than 40 million monthly active users, and offices in Seoul, Singapore, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
Viki describes itself as "global TV powered by fans". One of its most popular shows at the moment is called Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo.
Like Netflix, Viki has started producing its own content in addition to buying from others.

If you do not wish to pay a subscription, you can still watch most of our content with ads and SD quality on our website or our apps.

A Japanese retail billionaire, rather than a Silicon Valley wunderkind, is poised to be the biggest beneficiary of Lyft Inc.’s impending initial public offering.
Hiroshi "Mickey" Mikitani’s e-commerce group Rakuten Inc. owns 13.1 percent of the ride-hailing company’s Class A shares, offering documents show. That would be worth about $2 billion if Lyft goes public with a valuation in the middle of its anticipated range of $20 billion to $25 billion, according to calculations by Bloomberg.
