Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Japanese mobile network operator Rakuten (OTCPK:RKUNF), now building the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native network, is a more recent customer win for RDCM, but a great example of how innovative software-based solutions may become a “must have” in the close future for all telecoms.
Asia-Pacific is the leading region in the global NFV/SDN market, as noticed by STL Partners:
Highest volume of deployments and consistent record of innovation. The region points the way ahead for the global market.
Rakuten is leading innovation through a complete transformation in the telecom infrastructure buildout:
“If you look at any traditional operator, both inside and outside of Japan, it’s actually a very unnatural process to upgrade to 5G. They have to completely virtualize their infrastructure, they have to deploy new core architecture, they have to deploy new radio access. In Rakuten’s world, the entire core technology, including our Radio Access Network, is fully ready for 5G.”

Officials plan to offer administrative steps in English, removing the language barrier that makes it difficult for companies to set up operations.
Japan is competing with other Asian centers to attract financial firms, including Singapore which has a lower tax rate.
Until now, foreign firms in Japan have had to provide documentation in Japanese in their dealings with authorities.
Japan's government is also planning to increase the amount of English-language information it makes available about education and healthcare services for company employees.

One of the world’s leading chip companies has gone back to the future. Best known as a supplier of the advanced semiconductors that control smartphones, Qualcomm Technologies’ cooperation with Rakuten Mobile has seen the chip company reprise its historic role as a holistic supplier of cellular technology.
Having spent decades developing highly-integrated, cost-effective chipsets for handsets, Qualcomm Technologies is now applying that expertise to the silicon employed in the radio access network infrastructure. As well as providing the chips that control 4G and 5G devices, Qualcomm Technologies is supplying baseband silicon solutions for the radio resources employed in Rakuten Mobile’s cell sites, enabling the new network to benefit from the San Diego-based company’s highly-integrated, cost-effective semiconductors. Its integrated baseband chips are designed to process the radio signals with the RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit) and manage the wireless transmissions.
Now that Rakuten has demonstrated that a disaggregated RAN with split architecture can work well at scale, Qualcomm Technologies is seeing interest from operators worldwide in also adopting this pioneering approach to building a cellular network.
In the meantime, Qualcomm Technologies is working with Rakuten Mobile and other operators to explore emerging use cases for 5G networks, which offer a step-change in throughput, capacity and latency. Whereas 4G networks generally serve smartphones, 5G networks will be serving a much broader range of devices used across all sectors of the economy. “We are now transitioning from a consumer-centric technology into an operational technology,” says Malladi.
“Qualcomm Technologies is a technology treadmill: we constantly come out with new technologies and always have new ideas,” notes Malladi. “But these new ideas need adopters and people who believe in the new concepts… Rakuten gets equally excited about the new technology that’s coming.”

Shopback says 9.9 sales increased online traffic within 2 hours
by NUR HAZIQAH A MALEK / pic by ARIF KARTONO
MALAYSIA’S online shopping traffic sees a year-on-year (YoY) increase against the previous year for the 9.9 sales yesterday as consumers look to shop more on massive discounts during online sales campaign.
The cashback platform Shopback Malaysia country GM Eddy Han said the increased traffic is a positive start to its 9.9 Rewards Day, which kicks off the year’s ShopFest and sets the tone for the subsequent sales days.
“From the data we gathered, we observe that the online shopping traffic during the first two hours of 9.9 increased YoY from 2019, with the three most purchased categories being home and living, health and beauty, and electronics,” he said in a statement yesterday.
“Consumers are not only shopping online, but are also looking for ways to save more — making the app’s position as the first point online shopping which is clearly a value-add to consumers who are seeking out the best deals online.
He added that the five most popular merchants or e-platforms currently being used for the sales day are Shopee, Taobao, Zalora, Watsons and Booking.com.
“Last year, the number of orders enabled through Shopback platforms during 9.9 is about four times higher than a normal day. We are confident to achieve better results this year,” he said.
Currently, over three million shoppers have entered Shopback website or app to earn cashback and grab promo codes before shopping.

Lyft (LYFT) has revealed that in the week ended September 6, 2020, rideshare rides reached a new high since April as the change in rideshare rides recovered to less than a 50% year-over-year decline.
In the first two months of the third quarter, rides on Lyft’s rideshare platform were down 53.6% versus the same period a year ago. Rideshare rides in the month of August 2020 increased 7.3% versus July 2020 and were down 53.0% versus the same period a year ago.
And LYFT continues to expect Q3 Adjusted EBITDA loss below $265 million if driver incentives spend and average daily rideshare ride volume in September match August 2020 levels. This includes the $17.55M in policy spend related to Proposition 22 in California. Following the update, RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney reiterated his buy rating on LYFT with a $48 price target. He sees Q3 RBC/Street Revenue estimates, which call for -50%/-48% Y/Y, as achievable with modest upside, given Rides commentary and the low driver incentive environment.
According to Mahaney, Lyft provides a great recovery play and re-rating opportunity once conditions normalize. “We remain patiently optimistic” says the analyst, adding “it’s not a question of IF, but rather WHEN.”

As a global recession bites, Europe needs to look to Asia rather than Silicon Valley for inspiration

Covid-19 lockdowns have accelerated the switch from offline to digital at an unprecedented rate, as people accustomed to sending money in-person over the counter have found money transfer shops and offices closed.
At Azimo, monthly new customer numbers are around 50% higher than they were before the crisis. The average amount sent to the Philippines, a key Asian remittance market, is up 20%. Azimo transfers to Philippine bank accounts doubled during the first few months of lockdown as more customers make the switch from using cash-pick-up locations and bring their money online.

Algorithmia launches new Teams edition of its AI platform
BY MARIA DEUTSCHER
Algorithmia Inc., a Google LLC-backed startup that helps companies build and deploy artificial intelligence models, today launched a pay-as-you-go “Teams” edition of its platform to make it more accessible for machine learning developers.
The new low-cost edition could give the startup’s sales strategy a boost in a time when it faces fierce competition from other AI tooling providers.
The startup says companies are charged according to the processor capacity their engineers use as part of projects. Algorithmia is also offering a more expensive flavor of the Teams edition, called Professional, that is likewise billed based on hardware usage but adds an extra $299 monthly fee in exchange for access to priority customer support.
The Teams edition could play an important role in the startup’s customer acquisition efforts going forward. AI initiatives often start small, even in the enterprise, and engineers have a limited budget to spend on development tools during a project’s initial phases.

The streaming service, which offers free and paid tiers, has surged in popularity this year. The company said it now has more than 15 million subscribers globally (including those watching free with ads), up 50% from a year ago.
While many streamers have seen increased traffic since the COVID-19 pandemic locked people in their homes, Rakuten Viki has capitalized on the rising demand for Korean content and become a go-to streaming site for East Asian television shows and films. In the last year, U.S. demand for Korean-language content has grown by 66%, according to the L.A.-based research firm Parrot Analytics.
“The trend in the Korean wave actually began over 20 years ago, and it’s been building for many years leading up to the recent breakthrough,” Rakuten Viki Chief Executive Sam Wu said. “So we’ve been seeing that growing appetite in Asian content firsthand here.”
On Rakuten Viki, users can curate collections of shows on the site, at least one of which is focused on dramas that feature K-pop idols. Additionally, many of the site’s subtitles in more than 130 languages are generated by users and volunteers who compete to contribute the most content, giving the site its name.
Rakuten Viki uses a tiered subscription system, offering free content with ads and monthly subscriptions of $4.17 or $8.33.
Although it targets a global audience, Rakuten Viki has a big following in the U.S., where it attracted 5 million users in the last month. The company has more than 100 employees with offices in Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore.

With over 100 million members and an abundance of lifestyle tech services on offer, Rakuten is uniquely positioned to engage with Japan’s tech-shy silver generation.
In June 2019, Rakuten launched a new service aimed directly at the demographic: Rakuten Senior. Established with the express goal of improving senior IT literacy and quality of life through the use of modern technology, the service provides a number of functions tailored to individuals 65-and-over, as well as family members of all ages.
The Rakuten Senior app tracks users’ daily steps. After reaching 4,000, the app encourages them to check into select local community centers, stores and even Rakuten Mobile shops, where they can scan their QR code and receive Rakuten Points. Points can then be used on many services in the Rakuten Ecosystem, or even for shopping at brick-and-mortar stores through the Rakuten Pay app.
Seniors can use the app to register for fitness and English conversation classes, musical performances and a variety of workshops at their local community centers. After an initial collaboration with locations in Kanagawa Prefecture, Rakuten Senior recently expanded its list of cooperating community centers to over 90 around Tokyo. The team hopes to cover all of Japan in the future.
