Rakuten Marketing is an affiliate marketing service provider. The company, in 2005, claimed it was the largest pay-for-performance affiliate marketing network on the Internet.

LinkShare was founded in 1996 by Stephen Messer and Heidi Messer. The company is headquartered in New York City, with offices in San Francisco, Chicago, Tampa, Tokyo and London. In 2005, Rakuten acquired LinkShare for US$425 million in cash,  making LinkShare a wholly owned U.S. division of Rakuten, Inc., a Japanese shopping portal.

Rakuten LinkShare was re-branded to Rakuten Affiliate Network in 2014.

Mobility experience with undetected transition by a move between networks.”

Japanese cloud-based mobile carrier Rakuten has launched its roaming agreement with KDDI to allow customers to keep in touch across the country.

Rakuten Mobile runs an existing 4G network and plans to launch its 5G services in June 2020.
The latest deal, working with Cisco, means Rakuten can offer service continuity for its customers, provide a superior connection, and allow data and voice services to move seamlessly from one operator’s network to another.

“With the launch of our S10 roaming service, we are setting a new experience standard for service and device continuity over multiple networks,” said Tareq Amin (pictured), CTO of Rakuten Mobile. S10 is a signalling interface approved by 3GPP, the global mobile standards body.

“With KDDI’s collaborative support, Rakuten Mobile and Cisco are showcasing new ways to combine our technology and talent to bring big benefits to the people who rely on our networks to stay connected every day.”

Amin is former CTO of Reliance Jio, the Indian mobile operator that has undercut other companies in the country. Rakuten, owned by a Japanese electronic commerce and online retailing company, is modelling its launch on that of Jio.

Cisco’s Jonathan Davidson, general manager of mass scale infrastructure, explained: “Adding S10 handover between Rakuten Mobile and KDDI offers Rakuten Mobile subscribers a seamless mobility experience with undetected transition as they move between networks.”

I see Rakuten heading in a global direction. Other operators are interested in the Rakuten Mobile model, they’re watching how we’re doing things here. Are we making mistakes? Yes, we are! Are we also paving the path to where everybody is going to be in the next five to seven years? Absolutely yes!

I think we will be guiding other carriers around the globe to follow what we are doing. We have the ability to share this knowledge with everybody else out there. Because we are really doing remarkable things. We’re making history. We’re building a revolution. It’s not just evolution, it’s a true revolution.

Lyft  (LYFT) - Get Report shares got a buy rating from Argus analyst Jim Kelleher, who began coverage of the country’s No. 2 ride-hailing service with a $39 price target.

He says the North American ride-sharing market is big enough to support Lyft, its bigger competitor Uber  (UBER) - Get Report and possibly even others.

“Ridesharing is not a 'winner-take-all' industry,” he wrote. “The company has also invested sufficient capital in building out its technology infrastructure.”

Morningstar analyst Ali Mogharabi also has a positive view on Lyft.

“It has quickly emerged as the number two ride-sharing player, a position we think the firm will keep for years ahead,” he wrote in a report last month.

Mogharabi thinks Lyft has a narrow economic moat, “thanks to the network effect around its ride-sharing platform and intangible assets associated with rider, rides, and mapping data, which we think can drive Lyft to profitability and excess returns on invested capital in the future.”

But Mogharabi does say Lyft is at a disadvantage compared to Uber during the coronavirus pandemic. That's because Uber’s revenue is more diversified. He puts the fair value for Lyft shares at $50.

When the world is practicing self-quarantine and stay at home policy, Viber’s new digital features are bringing people together and endorsing positive mental attitude to cope up with the current situation. This has resulted in a remarkable increase in app usage worldwide.

Over the past few weeks, engagement has increased across the entire platform. The most popular features right now are in communication—specifically group messages and calls. Group messages sent are 134% greater, and the number of group calls received by an average Viber user rose to 370% in the past two weeks. The average number of Community engagements has risen by 78%. In Sri Lanka, the number of group calls made was 4 times higher than before and the number of community views has risen by 66%.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Viber has increased its capacity to and introduced new initiatives, with more on the way. The app has boosted the number of participants in audio calls from 5 to 20 people at a time.

Together with authorities, Viber launched special communities in several countries where users can receive official and trusted information about the pandemic. Here in Sri Lanka, Viber launched HPB SL Covid-19 a collaborative initiative with the Health Promotion Bureau to disseminate valuable and verified information about the coronavirus to its over 302K members.

Shopify now also offers its merchants a Rakuten Ichiba app which allows them to register products, manage inventory and orders for stores on Rakuten Ichiba, making it possible for Shopify merchants to easily add Rakuten Ichiba as a new sales channel and expand their market.

For U.S. based Shopify merchants, the ability to operate local stores on Rakuten Ichiba through Shopify allows them to expand their business in Japan with relative ease. It also provides Rakuten Ichiba users greater opportunities to buy overseas products, including major global brands that are difficult to obtain in Japan. From today, these support services will be launched in the U.S. and Japan, with plans also underway to rollout to other regions.

Rakuten Ichiba is one of Japan's largest internet shopping malls, with approximately 50,000 merchants. Since its founding, empowerment has been a Rakuten core value and a driver of the company's deep commitment to support its many unique merchants through a marketplace platform that allows merchants to maximize their individual strengths.

Altiostar CEO: Open RAN Will Dominate in 3 Years

Matt Kapko EditorApril 11, 2020 2:00 PM

Altiostar has been pushing for open radio access network (RAN) interfaces and architecture since CEO Ashraf Dahod founded the company in 2011.

Nearly a decade later, that vision has become a force that is poised to upend one of the most critical components of mobile networks. Open RAN has made considerable strides and while it’s not the dominant technology framework for mobile networks today, Dahod is confident that will change soon.
“There is now a significant global movement to go to open RAN,” he told SDxCentral. “In the next three years, economic forces will drive operators to go to open RAN.”

With multiple surveys indicating that customers are largely unwilling to pay extra for 5G connectivity, economics are going to force operators to seek out deployments that carry lower costs, Dahod explained. With open RAN, operators’ capex can be reduced up to 40% and opex can be cut by about 30%, he said.

Another approach involves ASP-1929 photoimmunotherapy being developed by Rakuten Medical. ASP-1929 photoimmunotherapy utilizes a light activatable payload (IRDye® 700DX, IR700) conjugated to a monoclonal antibody (cetuximab). (Table 2.0)

Targeted binding of this antibody-dye conjugate to a specific antigen, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) followed by activation of the dye with non-thermal red light (690 nm) results in rapid and selective tumor cell killing.

Light activation of the non-toxic payload results in the generation of singlet oxygen species that damage the cell membrane integrity, resulting in necrotic and immunogenic cell death of tumor cells, resulting in minimal damage to surrounding normal tissue.

Photoimmunotherapy can also lead to local and systemic anti-cancer immune responses.
“Photoimmunotherapy is a new antibody-based cancer treatment which employs a light activatable payload that enables rapid destruction of tumor cells, thereby inducing tumor necrosis and activation of anti-cancer immunity.”

“Using the Photoimmunotherapy platform technology, a Phase I/IIa clinical study using cetuximab-IR700 conjugate has shown promise in treating recurrent locoregional head and neck cancer and is currently being evaluated in a global phase III clinical trial,” explained Miguel Garcia-Guzman, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Rakuten Medical.

Empowering businesses and organizations across the globe

Throughout the world, Rakuten’s marketplaces are helping a wide variety of merchants keep their businesses open and vital. Rakuten Germany helped retailers transition online by temporarily waiving fees for new merchants. Rakuten France is offering reduced fees and personalized support through accelerated training webinars for new merchants impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown.

In March, Japan’s Rakuten Ichiba marketplace created a special hotline to support merchants and offer advice on topics ranging from product delivery delays and inventory shortfalls to difficulties with payments. The service also launched online seminars on best practices and eased merchant delivery standards during this period.

Based on feedback from regional merchants, the Japan marketplace launched a nationwide campaign to promote fresh local delicacies, from fresh noodles to crabmeat and specialty desserts. Rakuten contributes to a special COVID-19 fund with every campaign purchase.

The marketplaces are working with merchants to be a reliable source of critical health products and supplies like face masks, liquid sanitizers and sanitizing wipes. They are also monitoring and taking action against potential price-gouging or scamming.

Rakuten Americas moved quickly to launch Rakuten Takeout, a free platform powered by Rakuten Ready for local restaurants to offer takeout options to Rakuten members. For a limited time, members who use Rakuten Takeout are earning 20% cash back on orders from their favorite local restaurants. While the service is currently only available near the Rakuten Americas San Mateo, California headquarters, plans for expansion are underway.

In a campaign run in March, Rakuten Rewards supported the retail businesses hit hardest by the pandemic because of their reliance on foot traffic to drive sales. This campaign resulted in a 100% lift in online shopping trips and a 46% increase in their sales.

Also, Japan's mobile situation is undergoing fast-paced change at the moment with the entry of a new operator, Rakuten, which is making the transition from a mobile virtual network operator to a full player in the market with its own network, spectrum, and infrastructure. Rakuten launches too late for inclusion in this report. But Rakuten's launch will put Japan into the global spotlight because of Rakuten’s technology and business approach. The company is using different types of vendors and a modern, virtualized and more open network technology architecture. And Rakuten has announced disruptive pricing plans with unlimited data for users when connected to its new network, although limits apply when outside of Rakuten's network coverage. This means it will be important for Rakuten, and their users' experience, to extend coverage of the Rakuten network widely across Japan.

As a greenfield operator, building a softwarised infrastructure, DISH is looking to disrupt the US with lower prices just as Rakuten is seeking to do in Japan.

Rakuten’s CTO, Tareq Amin, claims that by using an IT approach, standardised equipment and virtualisation, the capital cost of building a network can be cut by 40%.

Further, it will need just 350 staff to run operations compared with the thousands employed by established telcos.

These massive promised reductions in cost allowed Rakuten to launch unlimited data plans at less than half the cost of those of its established rivals.

Viber, the voice-over-IP and instant messenger software by Japanese developer Rakuten, will launch “disappearing messages” to boost privacy and security across its messenger.

The feature will be added to its existing messaging apps and users can even set a timer for the content they share to remain visible for irrespective of whether they’re sharing text, images or videos.

The timer can be set for seconds to days, making it a truly customisable options. Once the timer is up, messages will be automatically deleted.

But it’s not exactly a new function, because Viber had previously launched disappearing messages on its secret chats.

However, the company confirmed that rolling it out across its normal app allows for enhanced security. Viber also provides the option to delete sent messages and implements end-to-end encryption.

Delivery service Glovo accelerates expansion in Romania amid lockdown

Spanish fast delivery service Glovo launched operations in five more Romanian cities last week, reaching a network of 23 cities in the country.

Bacau, Deva, Piatra Neamt, Focsani, and Baia Mare are the new additions on Glovo's map.
"During this period, more than ever before, more and more people need jobs and delivery services, which is why we believe that our presence in these cities will be beneficial to local communities. Deliveries represent a chance for partners to remain active, as well as a chance for those who are looking for a job or want to increase their income," said Victor Racariu, General

In the last month, Glovo has taken numerous protective measures for the couriers and their customers. It has equipped all the Glovo offices in the country with over 20,000 masks, gloves and disinfectants, and disabled the delivery signature so that there is no contact between the courier and the customer. It also excluded the high-risk areas from the delivery and pick-up areas and conducted online training dedicated to couriers.

Throughout the year, in the cities covered, Glovo will enter into partnerships with local restaurants and national chains, cosmetics stores, florists, and supermarkets. One of the app's biggest local partners is Kaufland.
