Rakuten Dumps $1.4B In Tech Holdings, Including Pinterest Stake

Rakuten, the Japanese eCommerce conglomerate, has sold billions of dollars’ worth in shares, including the entirety of its stake in Pinterest.
The shares were from the company’s technology holdings, according to Rakuten, and the sheer amount of them raised concerns among analysts about overvaluation in the sector.
Rakuten’s unloading of all its Pinterest shares came because of a loss of profitability in the company, which went public last April, though Pinterest had been recovering this year thus far. Rakuten, an early investor in the social media company, saw a return investment of 382 percent.
The company also sold its shares in Middle Eastern rideshare company Careem, which itself was recently bought out by Uber. Profits from the sale of Careem, along with Rakuten subsidiary Overdrive, will become available in the first quarter this year.
Rakuten CFO Kenji Hirose said the reason for the sales is that the company is looking to monetize its investments. He said the proceeds will be spent more on the company’s operations, rather than investments.

On the fashion front, Shanghai Fashion Week successfully pulled-off a digital only event in March, while Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo plans to live-stream its FW20 event later this month.
“We can expect to see livestreaming and videoconferencing technology improve significantly with the arrival of 5G,” says Takefumi Kato, a strategic planner in Rakuten Mobile’s Technology Strategy Department who specializes in 5G.
“You’ve probably experienced unstable video quality and audio problems when conferencing before,” Kato explains. “Those problems will be a thing of a past. In the age of 5G, because networks will be able to handle so much more data at once, our devices will no longer be bottlenecked by the speed of the network.”
The instantaneous nature of 5G networking is another major selling point. “One crucial aspect of 5G networks is multi-access edge (MEC) computing. MEC technology will allow us to livestream or conference regardless of where we are—at home, in the office, on vacation overseas—with minimal latency.”
But 5G will bring about more than just great picture and audio quality, Kato says. “We can also expect peripheral video technologies such as VR, AR and XR to be developed as well,” — a concept Rakuten recently demonstrated with an 8K 360-degree VR livestream in late 2018.

Rakuten Mobile Inc. (Rakuten Mobile) is now using Cisco’s Virtual Ultra Packet Core for its inter-network roaming service so users can easily cross over to KDDI Mobile across Japan. The LTE roaming service, defined by 3GPP and based on the S10 signaling interface standard aims to connect to mobility management entities (MMEs) between the two telecommunications operators.
According to a media release, “the MMEs track relevant user data sessions to ensure a smooth handover from one operator’s network to the next. The data path will be managed by connecting the KDDI network with Cisco’s System Architecture Evolution Gateway VNF supporting a Control and User Plane Separation architecture.”
“With the launch of our S10 roaming service, we are setting a new experience standard for service and device continuity over multiple networks,” said Tareq Amin, representative director, EVP and CTO, Rakuten Mobile. “With KDDI’s collaborative support, Rakuten Mobile and Cisco are showcasing new ways to combine our technology and talent to bring big benefits to the people who rely on our networks to stay connected every day.

CAROUSELL, a mobile classified marketplaces, on Jan 16 rolled out Carousell Protection, a new escrow solution, to provide assurance to buyers and sellers.
With Carousell Protection, buyers are now able to pay directly within the app to purchase an item. Money will only be released to the seller upon confirmation from the buyer that the item received is the same as listed, allowing buyers to transact with greater peace of mind.
At the same time, sellers can also deal more confidently on the marketplace by enabling Carousell Protection on their listings, as it ensures buyer commitment.
The payment transparency provided by Carousell Protection will enable the marketplace to manage dispute resolution between parties, should an issue arise.
“Online transactions are so convenient and open up opportunities for all to buy and sell easily. However, a few bad experiences can ruin this for a user. With this in mind, we have invested in several measures to reduce the risk of fraud to less than 0.1% in 2019,” said Carousell Malaysia country head Tang Siew Wai.

Cisco enables S10-based seamless roaming between Rakuten and KDDI
Until Rakuten Mobile extends its new 4G/5G network across the whole of Japan, it is reliant on a roaming deal with larger Japanese MNO KDDI to fill the gaps. Users will not get the same low Rakuten tariffs when they move onto the KDDI system, but they will be able to get national coverage, including on the high speed trains. Roaming between the two networks will be enabled by Cisco, which is providing an inter-network service based on the 3GPP’s S10 signaling interface standard. Cisco is running that interface within its Virtual Ultra Packet Core platform to connect the mobility management entities (MMEs) in Rakuten’s and KDDI’s networks, respectively. The MMEs track user data sessions to support handover.

The Taiwanese data center hardware company QCT won a starring role in Rakuten Mobile’s network build. And the company in recent years has become a contender against U.S. server vendors Dell Technologies and HPE.
QCT can design and make its own products, or it can also manufacture products that its customers have designed. It is sometimes compared to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as HPE and Dell. But it is also compared to original design manufacturers (ODMs) such as its big Taiwanese competitors Foxconn and Edgecore Networks.
Rakuten designed the data center hardware for its network and hired QCT to build it. In addition to its hardware manufacturing, QCT worked with Rakuten’s software vendors to integrate everything. “We had to work with Cisco and Altiostar on the VIM [virtual infrastructure manager] and vRAN software integration,” said Wu. “We have experience with Red Hat and OpenStack.”
QCT’s parent company is Quanta Computer, a Fortune Global 500 corporation. Wu says that Quanta manufactures one-third of all the laptops in the world today. In 2006, Quanta branched into cloud and got a big entrée into the business when Facebook approached it about procuring servers. “That really kicked off the direction,” said Wu. “We’ve managed to work with all the largest cloud providers: Google, AWS, Facebook. We’ve learned a lot about deploying massively scaled infrastructure in a cloud data center.”
That experience was appealing to Rakuten, which wanted to build its telco infrastructure on a cloud model.
