Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
On February 3, 2020, Rakuten Agriculture announced its plan to open a 100 percent organic frozen vegetable factory in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture. Due to start operations from mid-February, the factory will handle cutting, freezing, packing and shipping of vegetables grown on Rakuten Agriculture-managed land with Organic JAS certification*.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced Rakuten Mobile will deploy the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch to power its reconfigurable photonic mesh mobile backhaul network. Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s newest mobile carrier, is set to launch the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native 5G mobile network. The deployment of Nokia’s cutting-edge coherent and optical component technologies will enable Rakuten Mobile to easily and flexibly grow its network bandwidth for the rapid rollout of 4G and 5G services.
The mobile network will be built upon a nationwide optical infrastructure covering all 47 prefectures throughout Japan and supporting backhaul and data center interconnect (DCI) applications. Nokia’s wavelength routing technology will be used in both the long-haul and metro optical networks, creating a photonic mesh – the first of its kind for a mobile backhaul network. This will enable Rakuten Mobile to support surging mobile data traffic and a new generation of innovative customer services.
Nokia’s platforms are specifically engineered for the space and power constraints of mobile backhaul and edge computing networks, making them ideally suited to provide transport for Rakuten Mobile’s planned edge data centers. Rakuten Mobile’s backbone network will be optimized for maximum capacity and lowest cost per bit with Nokia’s industry leading Photonic Service Engine 3 (PSE-3) super coherent chipset and C+L Ultra-Wideband wavelength routing.

DNA testing at home is starting to gain traction nationwide as more people age and seek answers about their risks for diseases.
The market for consumer genetic tests is poised to reach ¥6.6 billion ($58 million) in sales by 2022, up from ¥4.3 billion last year, according to Fuji Chimera Research Institute. The sector is dominated by two domestic companies, Genesis Healthcare Co. and Genequest Inc. For ¥5,000 to ¥30,000, customers can send off a cheek swab to find out anything from their propensity for alcohol intolerance and allergies, to their risk of diabetes and stroke.
Genesis, the No. 1 testing firm with 70 percent of the domestic market, has compiled data for more than 600,000 users, and is aiming to reach 1 million this year. It also operates as GeneLife in Japan. Rakuten Inc. invested ¥1.4 billion in the Tokyo-based startup last August, with CEO Hiroshi Mikitani joining its board.

Don't try to time the market.
Many popular stocks have dropped more than 10% from recent highs thanks to the market volatility, but Buffett advised against trying to time the market and said investors should instead focus on the value of the companies they are buying. "I don't think anybody knows what the market's going to do. I think you ... know whether you're making an intelligent purchase at a given price," he says. Buffett said investors shouldn't worry about where a stock's share price has been or where it is going and simply consider the current valuation of the company.

One of the advantages of a photonic mesh mobile backhaul network is that the operator can move wavelengths around and respond to events on the fly. "Generally, you can add and move capacity around," Hollasch said.
And while it's possible to use an optical mesh backhaul network for traditional wireless networks that aren't fully virtualized, Hollasch said that it's much easier to combine this technology with a cloud-native 5G network. "It's harder for existing networks that aren't greenfield," he said, adding that this technology initially was used in core networks and now – as the technology becomes smaller, cheaper and denser – it can be used in smaller metro networks.

Ridesharing volume has been up in the beginning stages of this virus’s spread, and both Uber & Lyft have reiterated their 2020 guidance. Individuals are using Lyft and Uber increasingly to avoid public transportation, where the spread of this new pathogen seems more likely.
This temporary boost in ridesharing will likely fade if the virus’s transmission proliferates in the US, which many specialists are anticipating. People have already been increasingly working from home, and this trend will likely continue. I don’t expect that ridesharing will diminish all together as it is perceived safer than public transit with this virus on the loose. I suspect that temporary short-term headwinds in this segment will only remain until the coronavirus is under control.
The amount that LYFT shares have been punished is far from justified, and I think this stock is ripening as an excellent buy for your long-term portfolio.

Technology is a driving force behind changes to traveller habits and here’s a couple of examples from the US market. Among its many technology declarations at the CES show in Jan-2020, US major Delta Air Lines revealed its ambitions to transform its app into a true concierge, and its partner Lyft could help the airline achieve those aspirations.
Upon departure from the airport, Lyft offers Fast Match, Mr Zimmer said. “Instead of going to a hectic pickup area, you can use a unique security code to match with the next available driver that pulls up…” , he explained.
As Delta and Lyft contemplate new options for customers, recent research by Phocuswright shows that transportation network companies (TNCs) like Lyft are launching services that make them look more like traditional car rental companies, highlighting a pilot by Lyft launched in July 2019 of daily rental service in two California locations, West Oakland and San Francisco. The rentals are available through the Lyft app and include pickup and drop off at the rental lot.

Messaging apps have completely changed the way people consume mobile messaging, and with it, the kind of relationship they have with personal technology like their smartphones. But it’s also changed companies’ marketing habits.
This is a major shift not only in how brands communicate with consumers, but – crucially – how consumers communicate with brands. The beauty of messaging is that it’s two-way – while brands may still send some ‘Do not reply’ messages, usually customers can reply to ask questions, clarify details, change booking arrangements, and so on. Consumers now expect this – they want to engage with brands in a very different way. They’ve been kept on hold one too many times and prefer the ease and convenience of messaging instead. As a way of communicating, it’s native to how people use messaging for their own ends – they can talk to a brand just how they talk to their friends, family or colleagues. It’s a shift to what in America they call the direct to consumer (D2C) model. Effectively everything from prospection to sales to confirmation to delivery to post-sales is all done through messaging.

Rakuten Mobile said that it has made its first key hire to start operations in the U.S. market as it considers expansion for its cloud-based and fully virtual network architecture outside Japan. The company is set to launch its commercial 4G network service in April this year.
Azita Arvani is to be named General Manager of Rakuten Mobile in the Americas. In her role, Arvani will build the Rakuten Mobile’s U.S. business and oversee its development, strategy, and deployment.
“As we look to introduce the Rakuten Mobile platform to the world, the U.S. market is a natural first step. The most important piece to building Rakuten Mobile wasn’t the technology, but the people and culture. As we explore expansion to the U.S., I’m proud to have Azita on the Rakuten Mobile team," Tareq Amin, CTO of Rakuten Mobile said in a statement.
