It was worth the wait. Rakuten Mobile announced new pricing plans that are by far the simplest and cheapest (for data users) in Japan: unlimited voice and data for �2,980/month... and the first year is free. The catch is that it is only available on network whilst roaming usage, which will be a very wide area to start, is limited to 2GB/month. That makes the plan less useful for the most intensive (and highest ARPU) users but should generate high subscriber numbers as users take advantage of low-upfront costs to check it out without leaving their existing carrier. The end result is a race between Rakuten (network expansion) and the incumbents (moderating price declines) to provide a platform that offers lots of data cheaply. In the near-term, today's announcement is good news for roaming provider KDDI but less so for DoCoMo and Softbank. Meanwhile, Rakuten may benefit from headlines on subscriber additions going forward but giving away a year of mobile revenue and guidance of break-even for the consolidated business may #$%$ some investors. An unlikely loser in today's announcement could be Apple as a trend away from very expensive high-end devices in Japan gathers steam.

The outbreak of the coronavirus has not impacted consumer demand for ride-hailing services, Lyft's chief financial officer said on Tuesday.
Brian Roberts, speaking at the KeyBanc Capital Markets 15th Annual Emerging Technology Summit in San Francisco, said demand remained "extremely strong."
Lyft so far has had a very strong quarter and stood by its guidance for first-quarter results, Roberts said.

Rakuten Mobile’s executive team took a victory lap at a press event in Tokyo today, boasting that its skeptics have been proven wrong on the company’s goal to deploy the world’s first fully virtualized, cloud native, open radio access network (RAN).
Rakuten Mobile is using equipment, software, and services from Intel, Cisco, Nokia, Qualcomm, Altiostar, NEC, Mavenir, and Airspan. The company also announced a 20% equity investment in AST & Science, a global satellite telecommunications startup, which Rakuten intends to use for coverage in less populated areas of Japan.
“We believe telecommunication networks today are well overdue for transformation. In the age of Internet 2.0 and the age of hyperscale architecture, we felt that the current technology in the existing telecommunication networks do not scale and do not meet the demands of the future, especially in the 5G era,” said Rakuten Mobile CTO Tareq Amin.
By the end of this month, Rakuten Mobile will have deployed 4,400 base stations throughout Japan and it estimates to have at least 8,600 base stations installed within the next year.

Vodafone and Rakuten have joined forces to launch SpaceMobile, the world’s first mobile broadband network located in space, to widen the mobile coverage around the globe.
Joined by AST and Science, both partners will invest €115 million, along with other companies including American Tower, Cisneros, Samsung Next and the founder of the project Abel Avellán, to implement this satellite network (Low Earth Orbit) that will directly connect with smartphones.
AST and Science already successfully tested its SpaceMobile technology on the BlueWalker 1 satellite, launched in April 2019. Vodafone has also entered into a strategic alliance with AST & Science for the global deployment of SpaceMobile, providing its technical and operational experience. SpaceMobile will offer 4G and 5G services.

Rakuten owns an assortment of consumer media properties: Viber is a WhatsApp-like chat app. Viki is similar to YouTube, only exclusively focused on Asian content with 50 million users. And Rakuten TV offers streaming TV.
Until recently, each of these assets had its own sales team and unique tech setup, but that’s changing. But Rakuten has recently brought these media assets together under a unified technology approach and a single sales team - all underpinned by Rakuten’s retail data.
Because Rakuten owns these media properties, where it can set first-party cookies, Zito considers the company well-insulated from the coming demise of third-party cookies. “The companies that will survive and thrive will need their own media and their own relationships with consumers,” he said.
Rakuten Advertising spent a year on the project. In February, buyers will be able to work with a single sales point of contact across all of Rakuten’s assets. “Bringing these assets together in a more consolidated, cohesive way provides a great alternative for brands and agencies to the walled gardens,” Zito said.

The Denton County Transportation Authority will replace its Highland Village Connect Shuttle service this month with an updated and enhanced Lyft discount service.
In Highland Village and select areas of north Lewisville, DCTA’s Highland Village Lyft Zone discount program will be expanded to include Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., along with an increased subsidy per ride from $10 to $13. Weekday service will remain the same from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to a DCTA news release.
The change — which is effective March 16 — was made to increase efficiency, according to DCTA.
To utilize DCTA’s Highland Village Lyft discount program, the “RIDEDCTA2” promo code must be entered into the Lyft app. Once entered, the promo code will remain active and automatically apply to all trips that meet the service parameters, according to DCTA.

Und Cash-Probleme stehen auch nicht an, da man gerade erst durch Verkäufe 2 Milliarden Dollar Cash eingefahren hat (Overdrive-Verkauf, Careem-Anteilsverkauf und Pinterest-Anteilsverkauf), obwohl mir da zunächst eine der Begründungen, nämlich Risikoreduktion, nicht so recht einleuchten wollte. Wobei das vielleicht doch nur Zufall war, denn die beiden Schwarzen Schwäne, Corona und Ölpreistrouble, haben die bei Rakuten wohl auch kaum voraussehen können.
