Japan’s new fourth operator Rakuten Mobile today (8 April) launched its full-blown cellular service in Japan, throwing down the gauntlet with its low-cost price plan which threatens to spark a price war in the market. With the backing of e-commerce giant Rakuten, the newcomer unveiled a single price plan costing JPY2,980 (USD27.4) per month for ‘unlimited’ voice calls and mobile data – available in urban areas where its own network is live, including Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. Rakuten Mobile’s offer is a dramatic saving on the roughly JPY7,000 per month charged by the old guard, NTT DOCOMO, KDDI (au) and SoftBank Corp, for similar high-volume data plans. Kyodo News notes, however, that outwith its own (limited) network footprint, the new fourth mobile network operator is leasing capacity from KDDI to achieve nationwide coverage, and its offer is limited to 2GB of data in those areas. Meanwhile, from 22 April Rakuten hopes to boost the cap to 5GB in those areas, and it plans to expand its own network through the country’s 47 prefectures by March 2021. To boost uptake the operator – which first dipped its toe in the domestic mobile market in October 2014 as an MVNO – is offering ‘voice and data services free of charge’ to some three million subscribers in the first contract year. It is accepting applications through its website.

Rakuten Mobile’s fully virtualized greenfield network running on cloud native and open radio access network (RAN) technology is live. The commercial launch, which was achieved two years after the Japanese government allocated spectrum to the ecommerce juggernaut, marks the world’s first network-wide deployment of its kind.
It’s a network architecture that costs 40% less than traditional telecommunication infrastructure and the savings on opex are even better, according to CTO Tareq Amin. The operator is passing some of those savings on to customers in the form of a $28 monthly subscription for unlimited data, voice, and messaging services.
Rakuten Mobile’s successful launch also serves as a clarion call for the wireless industry, proving that there are indeed new and more efficient ways to assemble networks. Virtualization, open RAN, and cloud-native architectures have been demonstrably beneficial for many years, but this is the first time an entire network has been designed from the ground up riding exclusively on those technologies.

The company was on pace to have 4,400 base stations deployed throughout Japan by the end of March and expects to have at least 8,600 base stations installed within the next year.
Rakuten Mobile’s network is currently providing 4G LTE service, using antennas from Nokia and Altiostar, which the company owns a majority share in, and it plans to activate 5G service in June. The operator is working with NEC to build and manufacture a 5G massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for its 5G network in the next couple months.

Working together, Rakuten Mobile and NEC Corporation have achieved a world first – they have built the world’s first 5G mobile network radios based on an open and fully virtualized architecture. These high performance radio units, which can be used with network equipment from many different partners, will be front and center when Rakuten switches on its 5G services in summer 2020, initially in the Tokyo area.
Production of the groundbreaking radio units is now underway at NEC’s Fukushima plant and Rakuten Mobile has taken delivery of the first shipments. By deploying a fully virtualized network with an open architecture, Rakuten Mobile is aiming to reduce the capital cost of its mobile infrastructure by approx. 40% compared to legacy mobile operators, while also enabling it to tap a strong and diverse vendor ecosystem. In virtualized networks, the software is decoupled from the hardware, increasing flexibility and lowering costs. NEC is working closely with Massachusetts-based Altiostar, which is supplying the software for Rakuten Mobile’s virtualized radio access network (vRAN).
As Rakuten Mobile has already tackled the “many challenges” associated with vRAN in its 4G network, it can now use that expertise to build a 5G Open RAN system, explains Nozomu Watanabe, senior vice president, NEC Corporation.
Despite the disruption resulting from COVID-19, the rollout of Rakuten’s mobile network is running ahead of schedule – the operator is on course to deploy 4,400 outdoor base stations in Japan at the end of March 2020, ahead of its original target of 3,432 for its initial launch. Rakuten Mobile’s 5G service is scheduled to be launched later this summer.

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 April 2020: At a time when the stock markets are being impacted by the global Covid-19 crisis, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd (Rakuten Trade) continues to meet the needs of investors.
Rakuten Trade, the country’s first and only fully digital equities broker, reported a surge in account openings during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period. More than 11,000 new accounts were activated (+100% month-on-month); of which more than 64% were during the first phase of the MCO period alone.
Mr Kaoru Arai, Managing Director, Rakuten Trade, said, “We attribute the high volume of appeal to many now working from home and other brokers still requiring some form of face-to-face contact. In view of this, we see many investors opting for a 'zero contact' equities trading platform like Rakuten Trade. The easy to use, non-face-to-face trading platform, and seamless account activation process that comes with using a digital platform like ours have become key benefits to enabling investors to trade in equities. Seamless, real-time trading coupled with affordability and greater control are an attractive package.”
In tandem with the surge in account activations, Rakuten Trade also recorded a 20% increase in trading value in March 2020, month-on-month.

Cisco, Altiostar and World Wide Technology to accelerate deployment of 4G/5G OpenRAN solutions
Cisco, Altiostar, an innovator in open virtual RAN (vRAN) technology, and World Wide Technology (WWT), a market-leading $12 billion technology solution provider, announced the companies are working together on an Open vRAN blueprint that will accelerate the deployment of 4G/5G OpenRAN solutions in service provider networks.
The combined solution will help service providers deploy fully integrated open, cloud-based virtualized RAN solutions based on technologies created by Cisco and Altiostar and that will be brought to market using the sales, integration and deployment capabilities of WWT.
“Innovation in mobile networking and open virtualized RAN is continuing at a rapid pace,” said Bob Everson, Senior Director of 5G Architecture, Cisco.
https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2020/04/10/...-world-wide-technology/
IDC recently reported in its Worldwide 5G Network Infrastructure Forecast that a large portion of 5G investments will be spent on the RAN and estimates that the RAN will grow at a 156.6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2018 to 2022.
Ghai noted that the RAN market has long-established players — such as Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, and ZTE — and upstarts, which includes Altiostar and to an extent Mavenir. “These [upstart] companies have obviously come to the market to disrupt the existing players,” he said.
While the established vendors have indicated they want to move toward virtualized RAN, there hasn’t been a lot of action. “Altiostar has beaten them to that in terms of the first global virtualized RAN with Rakuten,” Rhai said. “Rakuten has kind of been the poster child for virtualized RAN deployment.”

The effects of the COVID-19 crisis have made a large impact on Amazon’s fulfillment services around the country. On March 17, Amazon announced to all of its current sellers and vendors that they are suspending shipments of nonessential products to their warehouses through April 5.
The increased workloads as a result of the coronavirus outbreak have caused Amazon to prioritize deliveries of medical supplies, household staples, and other high demand products to their fulfillment centers. Although they will still be able to provide last-mile deliveries for consumers, this new change is dramatically affecting eCommerce businesses.
Fulfillment Solutions for Amazon Sellers
As a result of these new challenges, business owners are looking at alternative eCommerce fulfillment services like those offered at Rakuten Super Logistics. Despite the difficulties many industries are dealing with because of the coronavirus pandemic, Rakuten Super Logistics is still running 15 distribution centers across the country. The RSL team continues to deliver on its 100% fulfillment accuracy guarantee and is ensuring packages are arriving on time.
In the wake of Amazon’s decision to suspend nonessential shipments, sellers and vendors will be turning elsewhere to solve their storage and eCommerce fulfillment needs. Rakuten Super Logistics is ready and willing to receive all of those orders and resolve these shipping and storage issues.
Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL) is a national leader in eCommerce order fulfillment and freight brokerage. RSL’s nationwide network of 15 US fulfillment centers allows leading eCommerce retailers to reduce shipping costs, improve order accuracy, decrease shipping times, and increase customer satisfaction.

How does Rakuten make money?
Rakuten makes money every time you purchase something through their link. The company that you buy from pays Rakuten a referral fee for steering you to their site. Rakuten splits that fee with you as a reward for clicking their affiliate link.
For example, if you click on a link for Ann Taylor and buy a couple of shirts, Ann Taylor will pay Rakuten a predetermined amount for referring you, and then Rakuten gives you a part of that amount. If the amount is 5%, your share might be 2%.
Rakuten also collects user information including shopping trends, usage, and other activities.
Is Rakuten worth it?
Rakuten is absolutely worth it. It doesn’t cost any money and it only takes a few seconds to click on the link, especially if you have the browser extension. While it may take months to see a check for your earnings, it’s still the best cash-back product on the market.
