https://investor.lyft.com/news-releases/...er-and-fiscal-year-results

The new domestically produced, high quality 5G RU is equipped with a 3.7 GHz frequency band massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) antenna in a compact, lightweight form factor with low power consumption. With the 5G RU, Rakuten Mobile will begin the buildout of its 5G network, starting with the construction of base stations in the Tokyo area(2), and work toward the launch of 5G commercial services in June 2020.

Rakuten Mobile is building the world's first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud native network(3), and in October 2019 in Japan successfully implemented the world's first open, virtualized, distributed radio access network (OpenRAN). In addition, Rakuten Mobile and NEC are also closely collaborating on BSS (Business Support System) and OSS (Operation Support System) solutions for Rakuten Mobile's 4G network operations.

As 5G networks are an important part of social infrastructure, Rakuten Mobile aims to not only improve the convenience of existing services, but also to utilize the technology to create new business opportunities to solve social issues and contribute to regional development.

Gone are the days where you have to pitch your book to agents and hope they pick it up. Let’s not forget that Harry Potter was rejected 12 times. 12! You no longer have to worry about being rejected by a publisher or agent. You can take your writing life into your own hands with self-publishing platforms like Kobo Writing Life (KWL).

Indie authors control their future
With self-publishing, you control it all - pricing, distribution rights, design, publication date and schedule. It’s liberating! Indies control the speed of release and they’re shifting the book market.

Readers care about books, not how books are published
At Kobo, we don’t differentiate between independently written books and books published by a traditional publisher. Books published through Kobo Writing Life are constantly on our best-seller lists - in fact, 1 in 4 books sold in English on Kobo are published through KWL. I repeat: a quarter of all books sold!

By Rhiannon Farrar | February 17, 2020 | NEWS

E-commerce is becoming more and more global with consumers increasingly purchasing from international brands. In Asia-Pacific alone, almost 40% of consumers prefer to purchase from international brands. The appetite for shopping from worldwide brands has led to an increase in competition for advertisers, making it more difficult to effectively reach and engage their target audience. This increase in competition, coupled with the intricacies of expanding into a new market, can be a daunting and challenging process for advertisers.

To overcome these challenges, advertisers need trusted partners, who have the ability and expertise to deliver reach and scale in the markets they chose to operate. This is where Rakuten Advertising can help.

Rakuten Advertising expands upon our award-winning Performance Marketing solution, which includes one of the world’s largest affiliate networks that enables advertisers to tap into our pool of more than 150K publishers in over 200 countries and regions. For those looking to expand into new markets, the relationships with publishers facilitated by Rakuten Advertising allows advertisers to launch into a new region using the low-risk, low-cost channel of affiliate, supported by programmatic display and search campaigns.

Interessierte finden dort also kostenloses Futter fürs Heimkino.

Equity Firm Agrees to Buy OverDrive
Dec 26, 2019

The private equity firm KKR has signed a definitive agreement to acquire OverDrive in a deal announced on Christmas Eve. KKR bought the leading digital platform that delivers e-books and digital audio to libraries and schools from Rakuten USA, a subsidiary of Japan’s Rakuten Inc. Rakuten bought OverDrive in April 2015 from founder Steve Potash for $410 million. No price was disclosed in the KKR purchase, but Rakuten said it would recognize about $365.6 million in profit from the sale in the first quarter of 2020.

Rakuten bought OverDrive after it acquired Canada's e-book company Kobo in 2012; the OverDrive purchase, Rakuten said at the time, would allow it "to extend our mission of empowerment to new market segments and accelerate the growth of our digital content businesses.”

In 2019, Rakuten Group faced many challenges and celebrated many achievements.

In the internet services business, domestic e-commerce led by Rakuten Ichiba delivered solid double-digit growth in gross merchandise sales. This was achieved by strengthening our logistics infrastructure and our fashion business, by continuously improving our service quality to respond to increasingly diverse consumer needs, and by working to evolve our business model with the aim of sustainable growth together with our partner companies.

In the FinTech (financial) business, in addition to growth in the transaction volume of Rakuten Card, the pace of customer acquisition accelerated at Rakuten Bank, Rakuten Securities, Rakuten Life Insurance, and Rakuten General Insurance. In addition, with the support of the Japanese government’s policy to promote cashless payment, our payment businesses--Rakuten Pay, Rakuten Edy and Rakuten Point Card--are driving the growth of the industry both online and offline.

In the mobile business, in October 2019, after just 18 months of preparation, we launched our mobile operator service utilizing the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network, something which was said to be impossible in the telecommunications industry. 2020 will be the year of full-scale service expansion. As we recognize the significant scale of this challenge, we will leverage the full power of Rakuten Group to offer our users innovative mobile services which have never been available before in the market.

Internationally, businesses such as Rakuten Viber, Rakuten Viki, and Rakuten Kobo continue to grow. Global recognition of the Rakuten brand is rising rapidly due to initiatives including the transition from Ebates to the Rakuten brand, sponsorship of the Davis Cup, and entry to the professional baseball league in Taiwan, in addition to our partnerships with FC Barcelona and the Golden State Warriors.

As a result of these efforts, Rakuten Group’s global user base expanded to approximately 1.4 billion and global gross transaction value grew to ¥19 trillion. In 2019, Group revenue showed strong growth, reaching approximately ¥1.3 trillion, up 14.7% year-on-year. However, Non-GAAP operating income was ¥95.1 billion, down 41.0% year-on-year, due to investment in the construction of the logistics business infrastructure and the mobile business. Investment for the future in both businesses is also intended to drive the evolution of the Rakuten Ecosystem. This year, we will continue to strive to increase our corporate value and shareholder value by driving the development of the Rakuten Ecosystem to enable sustainable growth in partnership with all stakeholders, as expressed by our corporate slogan, “Walk Together.” We ask for the ongoing understanding and support of our shareholders in these endeavors.

27.03.20 22:05

It’s easy to forget that it’s still very early days for messaging apps. But it’s safe to say that in many respects, messaging will replace the web browser experience. It’s never going to be 100 per cent like-for-like, but we are already used to getting information from a messaging app, whether we’re consulting with friends before making a purchase, using a search function natively built into the messaging app (as with Viber), or using all manner of native services like digital payments or music streaming. It’s so much more convenient than constantly switching between the app and the browser.

With more of these services now coming baked into the messaging app, it’s clear that messaging platforms are moving towards a more browser-like experience. In the near future, expect to see a lot more customisation and personalisation of the messaging experience, similar to shortcuts and bookmarked web tabs – you’ll be doing the same thing in your messaging apps. We know that in markets like China and Japan, where messaging apps are a much more inclusive experience, almost everything from payments to gifting somebody money to search is already available within the messaging app. We’ll see this more and more in the West and European markets.

Chief among those companies on the hardware side is NEC, a Japanese electronics business targeting a larger role in 5G than it ever played in the 4G market. In June, Rakuten will switch on 5G radios built by NEC to new "open" radio access network (RAN) design principles, theoretically allowing one vendor's hardware to be used in conjunction with another's software. As the world's first commercial open RAN launch, it will be a litmus test of the new technology and NEC's ability to provide it.
Kazuji Tsuji, the deputy general manager of NEC's wireless network development division, alludes to the potential payoff. "There are many operators visiting Rakuten to discuss virtualized RAN networks and I am expecting to have many opportunities," he tells Light Reading. "We are hoping we can be involved in these projects."

Tsuji's remarks point to the unusually close relationship Rakuten has with some of its network suppliers. In Altiostar, the US software company integral to its RAN, Rakuten has even taken a majority stake. With NEC, the alliance seems partly an attempt to spur homegrown Japanese technology as an alternative to the "big three" of Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia, which collectively serve about 80% of the worldwide RAN market.

Rakuten Viber is doubling maximum number of group calls
Saturday, March 28, 2020 - 01:00

With the growing pandemic in the world due to the Covid 19 epidemic, countless people are being quarantined after exposure. In fact, working from home has never been a more realistic option. People can work remotely with their computers and smartphones, staying as productive as ever while keeping themselves safe. With apps like Viber, for instance, you can work-from-home with maximum efficiency and punctuality

“We’re committed to finding more ways for people to connect in groups during this challenging time without having to be physically in the same place. With more people working remotely, in response to the spread of the coronavirus, we want to do our part to ensure that people have a safe and secure environment to stay connected with loved ones and to be able to continue to do their jobs from wherever they are,” said Ofir Eyal, Chief Operating Officer of Rakuten Viber.

“Viber supports easy file sharing, so you can send your coworkers and business partners important reports and presentations quickly. Files up to 200MB can be directly shared within the app.”
The desktop version of Viber also supports chats and calls, letting you meet coworkers and clients from the security of your home. It also has a cool screen sharing feature, which lets you share what you’re doing on your computer screen to your contacts.”

Celebrating the launch of Rakuten Car: A look at Japan’s automotive subcultures

Since launch in 1997 as one of the world’s first e-commerce marketplaces, Rakuten’s wheels have never stopped turning. Today, the company is a global internet services leader spanning more than 70 businesses, each connected by Rakuten’s drive to empower communities — from sports fans, to followers of Asian dramas, to Japan’s passionate auto lovers.

To celebrate the recent launch of Rakuten Car, an evolution of Rakuten’s multitude of automotive services that is sure to rev up those car communities, Rakuten Today took a look at some standouts from Japan’s unique automotive history and its subcultures, from supercharged, lowrider scooters to Batmobile-inspired vans.

Rakuten Car: A place for the automotive enthusiast

Today, car owners in Japan are increasingly looking to the internet to support their automotive needs. Rakuten Car was created to bring many of Rakuten’s existing automotive-related services under one umbrella, making Rakuten Car the one-stop-shop for consumers looking to purchase automobiles, compare and book vehicle inspections, wash and coating services, tire mounting, find Rakuten Point-affiliated gas stations, or request used-car assessments and auctions, among other services.
