Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Pai said, “There’s no American-based supplier of equipment. But people are innovating to virtualize the radio access network and other parts of the 5G network. I’ve met with Rakuten. I just met recently with Altiostar, a Boston-based company.”
He indicated that 5G with its multitude of small cells and edge compute locations “increases the attack surface,” in terms of security. Pai is interested in companies such as Rakuten and Altiostar because they are working on next-generation wireless networks that replace proprietary hardware with software stacks that can run on generic hardware. He said these virtualized networks will help to bypass some security issues and also decrease the cost of building 5G networks.
“Software is something America has really led on,” said Pai. Although Rakuten is a Japanese company, it’s using vendors from all around the world, including Altiostar, which is a U.S.-based vendor.

Lyft
You can't discuss the gig economy without mentioning Lyft Inc. (NASDAQ:LYFT), Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:UBER) and the ridesharing space. Interestingly, both stocks have a strong positive correlations and follow the same trajectory.
While both companies have their own strengths and weaknesses, however, Lyft appears to be the better pick of the two. Even though it has not expanded internationally at the same scale as Uber, Lyft has the advantage of a cheaper valuation and lower levels of debt. The stock is currently trading at a price-sales ratio of 1.13, which is significantly lower than that of Uber (3.9). Also, its debt-equity ratio of 0.15 is well below Uber's 0.5, which implies a significantly lower capital gearing and relatively lower risk.
Admittedly, Lyft is burning more cash as a percentage of its revenue as compared to Uber, but the difference is not huge. Also, with an expected improvement in market perception, this stock will have a greater upside since it is trading at lower multiples.

Rakuten is arguably the best-known service of its kind -- or, at least, it was before the inexplicable name-change. I like it for its simplicity and reliability. Its browser plug-in makes it easy for me to check if there's a cash-back option for any given store, and its apps support mobile cash-back shopping. (Many, if not most, cash-back services require a desktop browser.) The service is also among the few to support in-store cash-back shopping as well. Every 90 days, Rakuten pays out your rebates in the form of a check or PayPal deposit.

Revenue per Active Rider increased 21.7%, 33.9% and 27% in the first, second and the third quarter of 2019, respectively. The new rental-car service, if successful, should further drive the top line. However, significant cost pressure due to high sales and marketing expenses are weighing on its bottom line.

20,000-square-foot facility in Aurora is expected to be able to service more than 100 cars a day when it reaches full capacity
With the driver center model at work in Aurora, not only can drivers expect discount work (just how discounted, company officials would not say) they also are coming to a place where the staff’s goal is the same as theirs: get the car back on the road ASAP.
Utilizing best practices pioneered by Toyota, the driver center today can use its three-lane garage system to service 22 cars per day, a figure that is expected to keep rising, said Chris Buller, Lyft’s head of vehicle service center operations. When things are really clicking, Lyft officials say the garage could handle 100 cars or more each day.
“Ninety percent of drivers are part-time. That means they are driving less than 20 hours a week. With that limited amount of time, any disruption is problematic,” Cohen said. “The interest of the driver center and the interest of the drivers are highly aligned because it’s part of the Lyft family.”
The center also has a large lounge area with Wifi, bathrooms and a coffee station. Company associates are on hand to sign up and certify new drivers, answer driver questions, resolve issues and provide information about Lyft programs such as the fleet of 200 rentable electric cars the company launched in Denver in November.
