Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Crystal Lee, Viber's Country Manager in the Philippines, told Myanmar Eleven during a sideline of its first media event held in Yangon on Wednesday that Viber has reached 5 million registered users in the country and hopes to attract many more users thanks to its strong, reliable products.
Viber’s popularity in Myanmar is also confirmed by independent research and a recent social media survey. According to OnDevice’s research published in June, Viber is the number one chat application in Myanmar with 79 per cent of Myanmar users actively engaging with the messaging and voice application. This data shows Viber overtaking Facebook and other mobile messaging competitors in the country.

“Rakuten Card has been growing like crazy – it’s on track to become Japan’s biggest credit card by transaction volume,” commented Kobayashi. “Much of that has been thanks to the explosive growth in the number of users, but increasing the number of businesses that can accept credit cards is also an important piece of the puzzle – and that’s where Rakuten Pay comes in.”
Rakuten Pay is making modern payment methods possible for Japan’s “mom and pop” stores, says Shigenobu Kobayashi of Rakuten’s Card and Payments Company.
Another driving reason behind the move was something that lies close to the core of Rakuten philosophy: “Rakuten has always been about empowerment, so we really wanted to lead the way in empowering Japan’s small to medium sized businesses by bringing them up to speed on payment methods. This was just like how Rakuten Ichiba brought so many businesses into the digital age with e-commerce 20 years ago.”

Chief Executive Officer Djamel Agaoua plans to roll out in March a new version of the app, which will function more like a platform than a single-purpose app with features that will eventually include e-commerce and banking. Users will be able to open a chat window with friends, look at restaurants, decide where to go, and make a reservation -- all without exiting Viber. Payment through the app is planned, but won't be part of the initial rollout, he added.

Popular messaging application Viber is getting a much-needed commerce twist with the integration of an automated banking system, further signaling the blurring between messaging platforms and other mobile functions.
The banking system expands the app’s functionality beyond simple messaging and into other services as well.
“This solution is going to transform the payments world for retail banks, payment processors and their customers,” said Oliver Lynch, business development director at Comtrade Digital Services. This is the only messaging platform that, through an API, can

Expedia Inc’s HomeAway has signed a partnership with ecommerce giant Rakuten as the home rentals sector in Japan bursts into life.
HomeAway will start selling inventory from “Rakuten Lifull Stay”, a partnership between Rakuten and housing and real estate information service Lifull which was only announced a few weeks ago.
The scale and ambition of Rakuten Lifull Stay is outlined in its announcement. Rakuten has more than 90 million members in Japan while Lifull lists some with 8 million properties and has a network of more than 22,000 affiliated real estate stores.
While a lot of Lifull’s business is renting homes and flats to “locals” rather than inbound or domestic tourists, the potential of vacation rental in Japan is significant, driven by a government which has identified tourism as a growth area. It wants 40 million visitors

Several estimates put Airbnb's 2015 gross bookings at approximately $7.5 billion (some are as high as $9 billion, while the low end of one model is a little more than $6 billion). Even at the lower end of that range, Airbnb's gross bookings for 2015 could be close to or slightly above accommodation bookings for China's Ctrip[1] and Japan's Rakuten[2]. Given the rental site's rapid growth (faster still than Ctrip), Airbnb would certainly surpass both in 2016. These booking volumes, even at the lowest end of the range, also put Airbnb well ahead of all regional online accommodation sellers, including Germany's HRS, the U.K.'s Travel Republic, and Ireland's Hostelworld Group, among others.

The future of technology lies in human language. Conversation is the new interface and “bots are the new apps.” What are chatbots? Very simply, bots are computer programs that simulate human conversation. They enable two-way real-time communication between companies and their client base. This is not science fiction, it’s something that most companies can use today to deliver better customer service and user experience and improve efficiency.

In Alibaba and Amazon’s shadow, Japanese Rakuten Ichiba is quickly developing. Several Western chains are using the platform to sell their products to Japanese online consumers.
Profitable
Rakuten Ichiba (loosely translaed into “Optimist”, what's in a name?) has been around for twenty years, three years Amazon’s junior, but still two years older than Alibaba. It would do it justice to just label it as an internet retailer: it allows current retailers to attract Japanese online consumers and foreign online shoppers can order Japanese products through Rakuten. However, the company has more than this gateway: it is active in plenty of industries, including banking, trael, messaging, e-books and more.
Over the course of the past twenty years, the owner and founder Hiroshi Mikitani turned Rakuten, with the help of some 14,000 employees, into a company with a 7.2 billion dollar annual turnover and a 350 million dollar profit. An online retailer with profit seems like an anomaly. Nevertheless, a sizeable portion of its profit comes from abroad: ever since it decided to spread its wings in 2005, it acquired several local platforms, including Buy.com (United States), Tradoria (Germany) and PriceMinister (France).

p.s.

Yandex.Checkout enabled online stores to send invoices to their customers via Viber messenger, allowing them to pay for goods and services directly in the messenger. This new option becomes available thanks to the cooperation between Yandex.Checkout and Russian email marketing service Imobis.
Receiving payments via Viber messenger is suitable for any companies that accept orders by phone, in social networks and instant messengers, for example, food or flower delivery services, shops selling items and accessories or Internet providers.

".According to Rakuten's reports for 2016, Viber's target for 2020 is no less than two billion users. The strategy selected in order to make progress towards this target is using the assets of the Rakuten group, which is listed in Tokyo at a $15 billion market cap and provides more than 70 services in 190 countries."
