The metaverse could be tech’s next trillion-dollar opportunity: These are the companies making it a reality

April 13, 2022

The metaverse is one of the hottest buzzwords in tech, and this far-reaching vision of a next-gen internet will rely upon an entire ecosystem of companies to make it a reality. We cut through the noise to explain what the metaverse is, how it's being built, and who's building it.

The business world is obsessed with “the metaverse”: the concept of shared worlds driven by virtual products and digital experiences that are highly immersive and interactive.

We already have virtual worlds featuring live concerts and online games where players spend hundreds of hours — but metaverse enthusiasts see a future where entire societies thrive in an online realm inhabited by avatars of real people.

While the space is still in early days, the longer-term implications may not be trivial. Some users — especially younger ones — may eventually earn, spend, and invest most of their money in digital worlds. The metaverse could represent a $1T market by the end of the decade, according to CB Insights’ Industry Analyst Consensus.

For the end of the spring season, Rakuten gives you the opportunity to get the Samsung Galaxy S21 at a reduced price. With a discount of more than 45%, the Korean giant’s smartphone goes below 455 euros.

Security has been considered in every aspect of Symworld design and functionality

June 1, 2022

This is particularly pertinent to telecom operators as they are the backbone of all digital services. Therefore, they need to stand up and look holistically over their entire domain and ask if they are doing enough to keep their companies and customers safe.

An operator cannot stand still and allow fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) to detract from its innovation and digital transformation plans. Instead, they must move forward, adapt and realize that security is an essential component in their business strategy and on an equal standing as the acquisition of a new customer.

So, as operators address new challenges and adopt new delivery models with containerization, container orchestration, open interfaces, and the latest generation of mobile standards, they should be continually asking themselves an important and valid question: Is this new world secure?

Unfortunately, you are under attack if you're an operator, and it is impossible to mitigate against everything. So how you respond, react, and what you ultimately learn will be crucial to your defense.

Symworld is the beating heart of Rakuten Symphony, a platform developed to reimagine telecom and break the shackles of the traditional approach to Telecom Networks. A modern, industrial-scale automation platform explicitly built for telecom with the ability of seamless integration to create a cloud-native marketplace.

Security has been considered in every aspect of Symworld design and functionality. Nothing has been taken to chance, with every interface and component following an extensive review to ensure security is front and center in the platform. As a result, the Symworld platform is not only thoroughly tested, but is challenged every single day as it is already deployed and successfully working in a fully functional cloud-native, software-defined 5G network in Japan.

Following a rigorous procedure of Security by Design, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to security. Rakuten Symphony understood early on that no single reference architecture or standard can address every possible vulnerability or detect every potential threat. Instead, we strongly believe in a pragmatic, dynamic, and always-on cyber security framework to help identify, respond, and recover from vulnerabilities or compromises to systems.

We follow a comprehensive zero-trust approach to security and follow a step-by-step process to ensure every attack vector, threat and eventuality has been considered.

Design with Zero Trust, Secure Coding

Immutable container images, signed container images and signature verification

Continuous monitoring and remediation of vulnerabilities

Ensure strict access control for resources as well as resource limit configurations

Securing cloud platforms with hardening best practices

Runtime observability and security based on cloud-native best practice

Symworld has been built to maximize automation and minimize the need for human intervention.

Symworld Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP)

All base stations are commissioned and brought online without the need for human configuration, including the security of all node aspects, with the generation, securing and vaulting of all interfaces and involved services. Subsequent configuration changes are handled through the Symworld Automation Studio. At no stage does a human manually write and run a configuration script and at no stage does any operational staff have any direct access to any security credentials. This is just one example of how security has been embedded into the operational model of Symworld as a first-class citizen and at birth.

Rakuten Symphony's approach has been driven by our early adoption of the "new ways of building networks" and the lack of any reference implementation of a successful nationwide Open RAN, cloud-native network deployment. As a result, we had to leverage 21st-century technologies for our 21st-century networks to achieve our objectives with the utmost resilience and privacy with user and data integrity in mind.

In the area of security, standing still is a much riskier strategy than moving forward. Actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and you must constantly evolve, as failure to evolve will sadly end with drastic consequences. Therefore, security cannot be an afterthought and needs to be designed into the fabric of the operator's business processes and procedures.

Disruptive technology can help it become a technology leader in developing and poorly served countries

June 6, 2022 by admin

Rakuten Symphony CMO Geoff Hollingworth claims that as the company targets such markets to work with more than 100 customers globally, disruptive technology can help it become a technology leader in developing and poorly served countries.

So far, it has partnered with 1 and 1 companies to build and manage a fourth mobile network in Germany – it will be an Open RAN-based 5G network – and also contracted AT&T to develop solutions within Rakuten’s Symworld platform. Accelerate network planning and deployment. Also in the US, Dish Network, which is about to launch a 5G network enabling Greenfield Open RAN, uses a new era vendor observable framework (OBF) to manage and optimize the 5G network through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. ML) capabilities. Rakuten recently partnered with the MNS to test 4G and 5G Open RAN in Africa. (See the MNS’s reliance on the Rakuten Symphony for the latest Open RAN movement.)

The company also said that of the 110 potential customers it has identified, 13 have existing deals, seven are in the closing phase and 24 are in the supply phase, but did not name: This gives it a total of 44 sustainable industry marks.

rakuten-symphony-highlights-african-operator-growth-opportunity

Rakuten Symphony has proof of concept open RAN trials in five African nations South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Morocco, through its operator partners including MTN Group.

Dabboussi explained these countries have the “most advanced” networks for the automation of networks, which Rakuten has been an advocate of since 2019 when Rakuten Mobile launched what it claimed to be the world's first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native network, which did not rely on gear from the world's largest vendors.

“There are certain countries that still lack 4G. I think there is still a window of opportunity for some operators to adopt the new technology stack, and modernise even their 4G network. Whether it's a new 4G network or 5G, our goal is to offer an Africa specific solution set that could be a catalyst for reducing cost, meeting the profitability targets of operators, and potentially put that in an operating model,” said Dabboussi.

Rakuten Viber and Mineski Global launch mgames chatbot on Viber

Published June 9, 2022, 1:03 PM

by Jonathan Castillo

Rakuten Viber, in partnership with Mineski Global, brings hypercasual gaming to a whole new level as it introduces exciting and easy-to-play games on the world’s leading messaging app.

Starting June 2022, Viber users across the Asia Pacific will have free and easy access to up to 70 hypercasual games via the mgames chatbot on Viber, with new games to be introduced every month. mgames is a casual gaming platform created by Mineski Global, offering an extensive library of games that are easy to play, and are lightweight in terms of game mechanics and design.

Viber users are expected to see all sorts of games, including fantastic puzzle solving, happy-go-lucky screen tapping, and competitive car racing. These interactive hypercasual games allow people to compete for rewards and leaderboards and play with their Viber network. Users can also create their own private lobbies and have a fun time with their friends and family.

The social aspect of gaming is often overlooked, but we believe it creates one of the strongest reward loops that incentivise consumer behaviour. For instance, mgames on Viber have private lobbies so users can host friendly competitions with their family and friends. This and other features are novelties that will make your messaging app experience more dynamic,” says Ronald Robins, Mineski's Chief Executive Officer.

“Our partnership with Viber is a testament to our commitment to creating rewarding experiences through gamification. This integration is reminiscent of Mineski’s early days of building communities through a common love for gaming. We are now proud to deliver this promise to the larger, more diverse casual gaming audience that only Viber can aggregate."
