VideoAge*: Can you tell us about Rakuten TV’s overall streaming offerings?*
Cédric Dufour: The streaming offering is huge and for every taste. There are premium movies, including the best new releases and blockbusters directly from Hollywood and Europe in its TVoD section. There’s also free content in its AVoD section, including movies, original content, and linear channels (owned and third-party served). In its SVoD section, Rakuten TV includes Starzplay, a premium subscription service, available in Spain, as well as Italy, France, the U.K., Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
VA: What is the company’s approach to content acquisitions?
Yuko Oki: We will continue investing in new releases as we have registered, especially in the first months of lockdown, terrific positive results on our revenues. The pandemic restrained premieres in theaters and had a direct impact on the platform’s catalog of new releases, but the last quarter of 2021 showed positive results again, so we are confident for the trend of 2022. We are optimistic about consumption on our platform and we are working to improve the quality of our catalog (both TVoD and AVoD) and the usability of our platform.
AVoD will be a major pillar for us, with the launch of more linear channels. Also, we will continue to invest in the production of original content under our brand “Rakuten Stories.”

For the second year in a row, Rakuten Mobile has been honored with the GLOMO awards at MWC Barcelona (see video of Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin accepting the award starting at 24:29). The GLOMO (Global Mobile) Awards are sponsored by the GSMA and are designed to honor outstanding innovations that are changing the way networks function.
The awards are very competitive; winning one is significant, winning them in consecutive years however shows just how much Rakuten Mobile is leading the industry into open and cloud-native 5G networks.
Rakuten Mobile’s entry was for the “Best Network Software Breakthrough” category and was based on its use of Open RAN architecture in its nationwide 5G network in Japan. The network was built as a collaboration with eco-system partners including Open vRAN software from Rakuten Symphony.

AST SpaceMobile Announces Multi-Launch Agreement With SpaceX for Planned Direct-to-Cell Phone Connectivity
MIDLAND, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (“AST SpaceMobile”) (NASDAQ: ASTS), the company building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by standard mobile phones, today announced it has signed a multi-launch agreement with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (“SpaceX”). In addition to the planned summer launch of the BlueWalker 3 test satellite (BW3), the agreement covers the launch of the first BlueBird satellite and provides a framework for future launches.
The BlueBird satellites are designed to be compatible with the Falcon 9 vehicle, as well as other existing and planned industry launch vehicles. These production satellites are designed to provide broadband commercial service directly to cell phones, without any additional hardware or software on the phone. At full capacity, AST SpaceMobile expects to be able to assemble up to six BlueBird satellites per month at its Texas manufacturing facilities, which offer a combined 185,000 of square footage.
AST SpaceMobile’s mission is to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers moving in and out of coverage zones, and bring cellular broadband to approximately half of the world’s population who remain unconnected. Partners in this effort are leading global wireless infrastructure companies, including Rakuten Mobile, Vodafone and American Tower.

It’s also worth pointing out that companies in this space often collaborate to offer new solutions to clients. Take Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) as an example, the company and Rakuten Symphony recently announced that they are entering a partnership to help global service providers prepare the Internet for the Future. Building upon the success of Rakuten Mobile’s industry-first innovative cloud-native network architecture, both companies are combining their efforts to offer solutions that will allow mobile operators to compete more effectively in the cloud era.

In a new deal signed on Friday, the UK and Japan agreed to collaborate to expand the technologies on which telecom networks are built.
Julia Lopez, the UK Minister for Digital Infrastructure, and Yuji Sasaki, Japan’s vice-minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, agreed to several collaborative efforts to reduce the global over-reliance on a limited number of technology suppliers.
The nations agreed to share more information on respective policy approaches and plan to build a more diverse and competitive global market for telecoms equipment like wireless networks and 5G.
Betting on a better future
They also committed to collaborating on research and development, particularly in open and interoperable network technologies such as Open RAN, which allows telecom carriers to combine technical equipment from various vendors in the same network.
The US and India are open to the idea
Similar collaborations between the United Kingdom, India, and the United States have been announced to promote telecommunications diversity.

“From when we founded the company and launched Rakuten Ichiba in 1997, it took around 12 years for us to reach one trillion yen,” recalled Mikitani. “The jump from four to five trillion happened in just one year.”
As growth continues to accelerate, Mikitani reiterated his vision for the next milestone: 10 trillion yen. And underpinning that vision is a firm belief in the growth potential of Japan’s e-commerce sector.
“The global penetration rate of online shopping in total retail consumption was 17.8% in 2020. Last year it was estimated to have reached nearly 20%,” he remarked. “Meanwhile, data shows that the rate in neighboring China is as high as 40%.”
In comparison, Japan’s e-commerce penetration rate in total retail consumption of just 5.8% in 2017 climbed to 8.1% in 2020. “It feels like we’re catching up, but the gap between Japan and the world is actually widening.”
And Japan’s digital transformation could well turn this around.
“The pandemic has accelerated Japan’s digital transformation dramatically,” Mikitani noted. “We’re embracing a new style of working – remote work … [and so] the convenience of online shopping combined with the fact that more and more people are leaving major cities to work in regional areas could very well see Japan’s online shopping rate grow from 8.1% to 20% in the future.”
