True 5G is just around the corner: Tokyo Tech and Rakuten Mobile

AUGUST 3, 2021

After years of exciting headlines, "true 5G" may finally be upon us.

On July 4, Rakuten Mobile successfully verified data transfer on a 5G standalone (5G SA) mobile network with collaboration from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), on the grounds of the university’s Ookayama campus in southern Tokyo.

"Standalone" 5G: What’s the big deal?

The imminent age of 5G has been heralded in industry headlines for several years now, and many mobile carriers around the globe - including Rakuten Mobile -  have already launched their 5G services. So what exactly was Rakuten Mobile verifying?

MANY OF THE EXCITING HEADLINES SURROUNDING 5G AND ITS FUTURISTIC POTENTIAL HINGE ON THIS HOLISTIC APPROACH. PERFORMING REMOTE SURGERY, FOR EXAMPLE, REQUIRES THE ULTRA-LOW-LATENCY ONLY POSSIBLE ON A STANDALONE 5G NETWORK.

The word "standalone" gives most of the game away. Most of the 5G services that have been deployed around the world to date are "non-standalone," essentially 5G base stations connected to a 4G network. A standalone 5G network, meanwhile, is built with 5G technology throughout, from the core network to the radio access network (RAN).

With the overwhelming majority of the world’s networks still running on 4G architecture, this transitionary step of employing 5G tech on top of existing networks is an essential one. By doing so, carriers can offer next-gen speeds while leveraging existing infrastructure as they prepare to transition the rest of their network to standalone 5G.

But if tacking 5G tech onto 4G architecture can produce such great speeds, why is standalone 5G necessary at all? The answer to this question lies in the fact that 5G isn't just about pure speed.

While 5G NSA can provide excellent upgrades to a network's speed, it can't take full advantage of the high capacity, low latency and massive multi-connectivity that 5G can realize. In order to do this, everything from the core network outwards needs to be built around 5G.

Many of the exciting headlines surrounding 5G and its futuristic potential hinge on this holistic approach. Performing remote surgery, for example, requires the ultra-low-latency only possible on a standalone 5G network. Meanwhile, IoT applications are demanding more and more connections to work with more and more devices - another capability of standalone 5G.

Pushing new boundaries, setting new standards

Through collaboration between Tokyo Tech and Rakuten Mobile, data transmission was carried out using a 5G SA-compatible device on the 5G network at the campus, verifying the stable operation of 5G SA. Rakuten Mobile will leverage the results of the verification to improve the quality of its 5G SA network and in preparations for the full launch of commercial services.

The work is part of the initiatives commissioned by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Development Organization (NEDO) to Rakuten Mobile under the research theme of "developing post-5G information communications systems." For these projects, the operator is carrying out technical development related to the enhancement of virtualized RAN for 5G networks and the automation of network operations.

The Rakuten Mobile team has trials of cutting-edge mobile technologies planned for the near future. Network slicing, for example, allows single network connections to be split into multiple virtual connections through network virtualization, so that different capacities can be assigned for different types of traffic. Edge computing - in which processing is carried out close to the user (on the “edge” of the network) for low latency -  is also on the team's radar.

Rakuten Mobile has built its network architecture with an eye to the age of 5G and beyond. With the successful verification of 5G SA data transmission under its belt and the deployment of 5G SA functions in parts of its commercial network underway, the age of "true 5G" is looking closer than ever.

Rakuten acquires Altiostar at $1B+ valuation

By Ray Le Maistre
Aug 4, 2021

• Japan’s Rakuten, already a stakeholder, takes total ownership of vRAN specialist Altiostar
• Acquisition values Altiostar at more than $1 billion
• Altiostar already a key technology supplier to Rakuten Mobile

Rakuten Group has snapped up the stake in virtual RAN technology vendor Altiostar Networks it didn’t already own in an acquisition that, according to the Japanese company, values the vRAN specialist at more than $1 billion. Further details of the transaction and timing were not immediately available.

Altiostar, founded and run by serial mobile networking tech entrepreneur Ashraf Dahod (pictured above), has been one of the key technology suppliers to the Japanese digital giant’s wireless networks business Rakuten Mobile, providing key software for the operator’s 4G and 5G rollouts, as well as providing its software to other operators such as Dish Network in the US< Airtel in India and Telefónica.

Rakuten invested in Altiostar in May 2019 as part of a $114 million C round of funding and then in September 2020 it acquired Tech Mahindra’s 17.5% stake in Altiostar for just $45 million as part of a broader business relationship. As a result of that deal, Rakuten became a majority shareholder in Altiostar, though details of its exact stake were not revealed. Now Rakuten is to take total ownership of Altiostar by acquiring the shareholdings of the vendor’s other investors, which include Qualcomm Ventures and Telefónica Innovation Ventures.

Dahod will continue as CEO and take on a “key role in Rakuten’s global RCP organization.

Rakuten Acquires Altiostar to Boost Open RAN Efforts

Dan Meyer | Editor-in-Chiefan hour ago

Japan’s Rakuten Group scooped up U.S.-based open radio access (RAN) network equipment provider Altiostar for more than $1 billion. The move expands on an already established financial partnership between the two companies and bolsters Rakuten’s internal work toward creating an open RAN ecosystem.

The deal brings Altiostar under Rakuten’s umbrella that is perched on top of its Rakuten Mobile operations. The Japanese operator launched the first greenfield, fully virtualized open RAN network at scale to support 4G LTE in April 2020, and added 5G support last September. Altiostar played a role in the 5G upgrade that included a container-based, cloud-native 5G RAN.

Altiostar is also working with Airtel in India, Dish Network in the United States, and Telefonica in Europe and Latin America.

Following the acquisition, Rakuten plans for Altiostar to remain headquartered in the US with Dahod continuing to lead the business while also taking a role in its RCP unit.

Software focus

Head of GSMA Intelligence Peter Jarich noted Altiostar had “differentiated itself from some other open RAN players” through a “tight focus on software”.

“This aligns well with Rakuten’s RCP plans, giving it more control over yet another network function it can offer to other operators or enterprises.”

“Of course, the fact that Rakuten has invested in, and has been working closely with, Altiostar suggests that it knows well what the vendor can offer and has faith in the offer going forward.”

Fourth network operator: 1 & 1 is building its mobile network with Rakuten and Open RAN

Published by: MRT

Published on: August 4, 2021

1 & 1 will build its German cellular network on the basis of the Open RAN standard and rely on the Rakuten Group, which already operates such a network in Japan. As the general contractor, Rakuten will be responsible for setting up and operating the 1 & 1 network, the company announced in Maintal on Wednesday. “With Rakuten we have the world’s only Open RAN expert at our side who really has extensive practical experience with this new technology,” said 1 & 1 CEO Ralph Dommermuth.

United Internet subsidiary 1 & 1 bought part of the spectrum at the auction of 5G frequencies in summer 2019 and thus prepared its market entry as the fourth network operator. After concluding a roaming agreement with Telefónica Deutschland, the establishment of its own network is now imminent. This should begin in the “next quarter”, it said.
