A radical new way to run mobile networks could make connectivity better and cheaper

To get a glimpse of the future, Japan is often the place to go. In the Land of the Rising Sun, the future of mobile connectivity may be coming into focus. New entrant Rakuten Mobile has soft-launched a radical new mobile network that could dramatically lower the cost and increase the flexibility of cellular services.

Base stations break out of the straitjacket

Rakuten’s nascent cloud radio access network (Cloud RAN) virtualizes the radio network functions, separating hardware from software and enabling it to use off-the-shelf equipment. It is a dramatic departure from established practice in the mobile industry, which has always employed base stations composed of a tightly knit combination of hardware and software. As well as cutting costs, the Cloud RAN architecture promises to give operators much greater control over their networks – capacity and processing power can be dialed up and down in different parts of networks, while network services can be continuously adapted and upgraded to meet customers’ needs.

This architecture should also make it more cost-effective for enterprises to set-up and operate their own private 5G networks, putting such networks within reach of companies of a more modest size than Bosch, BASF and Volkswagen.

Brand & Business: How to turn Viber chats into ROI with Viber Messaging Solutions

Viber Messaging Solutions make it easier, faster and more secure to connect with customers

By adobo magazine
July 30, 2021

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Consumers are choosing to spend more and more time on their phones, and the proliferation of social media and messaging apps have given them greater access to brands and businesses. A recent Forrester/Google survey says that 68% consumers are more likely to go with the business that offers convenient communications, and a global Wolfgang Digital E-Commerce KPI Report reveals that 53% of customers are more likely to buy from a company they can contact via a messaging app. Combine these results with statistics that 71% of customers expect brands to communicate with them in real time, and you will see a challenge that both small businesses and big brands are facing now.

Viber, one of the world’s leading messaging apps, understands this and offers Viber Messaging Solutions that allow brands to reach their customers on each stage of the customer journey, and turn conversations into conversions as a result. Different businesses have different needs, so Viber offers two integration options — Business Messages or Chatbots — compatible with its three message types. Messages from brands to customers can be transactional (for example, order confirmation or notification about delivery of goods), promotional (messages with a special offer or promotion), as well as two-way conversations (customer support, receiving feedback, or placing orders).
Viber Business Messages allow brands and businesses to plug in their existing customers’ opt-in database. Business Messages can include richer messaging elements like images, files, and call-to-action buttons with links for a more enhanced experience for customers, instead of just generic text-only messages. They perform much better than emails (they have a much higher open rate, around 45 times higher than email and 3 times higher than push notifications) and there’s a reason for this: 96% of messages are read within three minutes on mobile devices. They are also cost-effective, costing much less than SMS, but you can also guarantee timely message delivery via SMS fallback for your peace of mind (e.g. for one-time passwords). Also, business messages are super secure for both brands and customers.

Especially for businesses who do e-commerce or want to improve excellent customer support, Viber Chatbots are another great messaging tool that can offer real-time customer support any time of day (or night). Chatbots are in touch around the clock and answer customer questions instantly by automating routine processes, reducing user frustration and increasing their level of trust in the company—all while reducing personnel costs. This messaging tool can also be leveraged as an additional sales channel, providing businesses with the the ability to sell their products and services directly to Viber. Chatbots are also great for collecting analytical information about customers, which allows businesses to create an accurate portrait of their target audience and to make relevant personalised offers to them.

Open RAN sales could hit $10B by 2025 – Dell'Oro

News Wire FeedLIGHT READING2/5/2021

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – According to a recently published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, the worldwide sales of Open RAN revenues are forecasted to grow at double-digit rates over the next six years with cumulative Open RAN investments – including hardware, software, and firmware excluding services – projected to approach $10B over the 2020-2025 forecast period.

"The conversation and the overall attitude towards Open RAN has clearly changed over the past six months," said Stefan Pongratz, Vice President and analyst with the Dell'Oro Group. "It is no longer a question if Open RAN will happen and the question now is more on the timing and the scope," continued Pongratz.

63054 Postings, 7223 Tage LibudaWhy open RAN?

    #7094
01.08.21 12:21
At its most basic level, the RAN architecture at the mobile network edge comprises a remote radio unit (RRU or RU) at the top of a cell tower that communicates with a baseband unit (BBU) located at the tower’s bottom. The RAN uses proprietary hardware and vendor-defined communication interfaces, and its software-driven functionality is tightly integrated inside the hardware.

While these traditional systems have worked well for MNOs, they have many drawbacks. Making any upgrade or change to the wireless network, even seemingly minor ones, requires replacing physical hardware throughout the network—a costly, manual, and time-consuming process. Moreover, the proprietary nature of the equipment and interfaces that connect the hardware locks MNOs into existing relationships with the vendor that originally supplied them.

Virtualizing the RAN and replacing proprietary interfaces with standards-based interfaces enables equipment interoperability and multivendor RAN deployments. This gives network operators more flexibility to pick and choose among best-of-breed solution providers. By opening the market, currently dominated by a handful of vendors, to new suppliers, open RAN can not only lower costs but also prompt greater innovation through competition, as well as allow MNOs to avoid restricted vendors.5 Additionally, because they allow operators to use software to push out network functions and intelligent automation, virtual architectures can speed the roll-out of new services that can help carriers better manage their networks, improving network performance.

Open RAN is not an entirely new idea; MNOs have discussed the concept of an open RAN architecture for decades. But despite open RAN’s appeal, adoption has hitherto been slow and met with skepticism due to technical engineering and integration challenges. Substantial confusion over the terminology and available technology options has also hindered adoption.

Now, however, open RAN’s momentum is growing as the ecosystem develops, partnerships form, suppliers ramp up investments, and operators commit to experimentation, trials, and deployments. Over the past several years, aggressive experimentation through both lab trials and live deployments are closing performance gaps between open and proprietary RAN solutions, steadily tearing down perceived barriers. Rising capital costs and national security concerns that further limit financial flexibility, as well as the rise of government policies to support vendor choice, are also accelerating the movement toward virtual and open RAN architectures. Finally, open RAN is riding the wave of several technology trends, including 5G, cloud virtualization, distributed edge computing, and artificial intelligence (AI)–driven automation. All of these factors can help push open RAN from just a cool idea toward reality.

Open RAN revenue skyrockets in Q1, tipped to double in 2021

by Diana Goovaerts |

May 21, 2021 11:26am

Two new open RAN reports issued this week showed revenue from sales of compatible hardware and software skyrocketed in Q1 2021 and predicted the technology could provide a significant boost to global GDP by 2030.

Dell’Oro Group VP and analyst Stefan Pongratz in a blog highlighted preliminary data that indicated a five-fold surge in open RAN revenue in the first three months of the year, driven in large part by uptake of the technology in Asia. Pongratz pointed to “a fairly synchronized migration from proprietary RAN towards Open RAN in Japan,” with Rakuten Mobile leading the way and other operators there “increasingly optimistic” about the technology.

Open RAN Revenues Up 5X in 1Q21

Open RAN investments surged in the first quarter of 2021. Preliminary estimates suggest total Open RAN revenues – including O-RAN and OpenRAN compatible macro and small cells radios plus baseband hardware and software – increased around five-fold year-over-year. The uptake is uneven. In this blog, we will discuss four Open RAN related key takeaways with the 1Q21 quarter including 1) The Asia Pacific (APAC) region is driving the market, 2) Macro is dominating but small cell adoption is improving, 3) The Open RAN Massive MIMO landscape is evolving, and 4) Short-term outlook remains favorable.

The operators in the APAC region are largely behind the surge, underpinned by a fairly synchronized migration from proprietary RAN towards Open RAN in Japan. In addition to Rakuten, which now has some 50 K radios up and running, other Japanese operators are increasingly optimistic about O-RAN and the role open interfaces will play with more advanced radio deployments.

Not surprisingly, macro deployments are dominating the Open RAN revenue mix both globally and in APAC, reflecting the state of the overall RAN market and the current focus by operators deploying Open RAN. This is also consistent with our own projections and the recently released Open RAN Technical Priorities Summary by the larger European telcos, suggesting Macro RAN is the primary target for the operators.

At the same time, Open RAN small cell activity is on the rise. Helping to drive this acceleration is faster growth with millimeter wave (mmWave) deployments in Japan, with multiple operators now embracing the benefits of combining the higher spectrum with the sub 6 GHz bands.

The traditional top 5 RAN vendors (Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE, and Samsung) are dominating the $10 B+ Massive MIMO RAN market, however, Open RAN proponents remain optimistic the recent uptick in O-RAN related announcements will eventually lead to an improved supplier landscape. Predicated on the assumption that the shift towards wider bandwidths will be a catalyst for 5G SA, the asynchronous availability of the upper mid-band spectrum offers a window of opportunity for new entrants.

In other words, even if the Massive MIMO market is relatively mature and highly concentrated, it is not too late for suppliers with weaker RAN shares to use O-RAN combined with SA to enter this segment. And the number of suppliers that want to seize on this opportunity to bolster growth is increasing with multiple smaller non-top 5 RAN suppliers – including Airspan, Fujitsu, Mavenir, and NEC – announcing the availability or upcoming GA of O-RAN Massive MIMO antenna systems. And with the silicon providers also ramping up investments to accelerate the shift towards advanced Open RAN radios, we do expect this non-top 5 supplier O-RAN Massive MIMO list to evolve over time.
