Record ad sales for China’s state TV network

China Central Television, the network with most viewers worldwide, has attracted record sales for prime time advertising slots next year, in stark contrast to China’s overall economic slowdown and to the fall-off in ad spending in other markets.
The state-owned TV network said its annual auction of prime time slots, held on Tuesday, brought in Rmb9.3bn ($1.4bn), up almost 16 per cent from 2008.
The rise in advertising revenue is particularly surprising as it follows the Olympics this year, which generated a surge in ad revenues. The countries that held the past three Olympic Summer Games – Greece, Australia and the US – all experienced a drop in advertising sales the year after the games.
“One third of the auction bidders were first-timers, signalling stronger-than-expected advertising demand in China,” said Richard Ji, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, in a note to clients. He also noted the strong commitments from financial sector companies and industries with exposure to domestic consumption.
CCTV reaches 359m households – more than three times those of networks such as CBS, NBC and Fox. But its total revenues, the equivalent of $1.8bn in 2006, fall far short of those.
As with China’s other media, which are all state-owned, the network remains under tight government control and continues to be a propaganda tool for the ruling Communist party. But the country’s media are also under mounting pressure to transform themselves into commercially viable operations and increase revenues.
