Google Keeps Talking Mobile

By Stephen Wellman,
12:40 PM ET, Feb 2, 2007

§
Google CEO Eric Schmidt yesterday spoke about Google's mobile plans during the company's fourth quarter earnings report. Schmidt highlighted Google's wireless deals with China Mobile (the world's biggest wireless carrier), Apple and its mapping app for the iPhone, cell phone maker Samsung, and Korean carrier SK Telecom. It was obvious was Schmidt's comments that Google is betting big on mobile.

Schmidt also made it clear that Google plans to double down on mobile search advertising in 2007:

It is clear that 2007 will be the year that mobile search query traffic grows substantially. Our current model is to use targeted text ads and we have evidence that the monetization of those ads is higher than in non-mobile uses. So it looks like the advertising revenue on a per-search query is likely to be significantly higher on mobile than on non-mobile.

Well, that's interesting for the consumer online ad market. But what about enterprise IT?

The unspoken strategy here is the consumer effect. Google plans to make headway in the desktop enterprise market by first introducing consumers to Google Apps. Then, Google will expose more IT managers to the applications, while convincing them that enterprises can safely make the switch from Office. I think Google's mobile services hook will look very similar.

As I posted yesterday, I think Google has a mobile strategy for the enterprise, but they're not coming out and showing their cards like they are in the consumer space.

Talk may come cheaper on domestic 3G
By Zhu Shenshen 2007-2-6

CHINA-DEVELOPED third-generation phones will probably cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$128) each, even cheaper than some current 2G phones, industry insiders said.

The low-price strategy will help homegrown 3G phones compete against Western technologies, said a source at the TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) Industry Association.

Companies involved in the TD-SCDMA industry chain, such as chip designers and phone makers, have even talked about trying to cut the price of their phones to US$100, said the source, who declined to be identified.

The price reductions are "very possible, as we own the patent on the homegrown technology, and we have invested heavily in TD-SCDMA chip design," said Zhang Wei, a Shanghai spokesperson for Shenzhen-based ZTE Corp, a member of the TD-SCDMA Association.

China is expected to issue 3G licenses this year, paving the way for the transmission of videos, games and teleconferences via mobile handsets. Most analysts expect authorization for a TD-SCDMA license to come first.

The other two technologies are US-developed CDMA 2000 and Europe's WCDMA (Wideband CDMA).

"TD-SCDMA can't compete with the other 3G technologies already used in the West, and most Chinese consumers would take a wait-and-see attitude if the homegrown phones are expensive," Analysys International, a Beijing-based information-technology consulting firm, said yesterday.

Analysys said that the aggressive pricing strategy of TD-SCDMA phones should help domestic manufacturers gain a quick edge.

About 16,000 TD-SCDMA phones are already being used in tests in several Chinese cities, and phone makers such as ZTE and Datang have launched 17 handset models, the TD-SCDMA Association said on its Website.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley has upgraded its stock rating on China Mobile (0941.HK: Quote, Profile , Research), the world's top wireless carrier, to overweight from equal-weight on a high earnings outlook.

"We have raised up our fiscal year 2008 earnings forecast by 12 percent to reflect a lower tax rate and further delayed competitive entry," it said in a research report.

The investment bank also raise its price target for China Mobile to HK$85.00 from HK$70.00.

China Mobile's shares were trading down 1.9 percent at HK$74.05 on Thursday morning.

AFX News Limited
China Mobile to roll out 3G service before end-Oct - UPDATE
02.12.07, 1:29 AM ET

§
BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China Mobile Communications Corp, the parent of China Mobile Ltd ( HK 0941), plans to invest over 15 bln yuan to build TD-SCDMA networks in 2007 and roll out third generation (3G) mobile services before the end of October, the Economic Observer reported.

The newspaper cited a company plan as saying that China Mobile (nyse: CHL - news - people ) will complete the construction of home-grown TD-SCDMA networks before the end of October.

According to the plan, the country's largest mobile network operator will finish the construction of 8,602 TD-SCDMA base stations in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen before October this year.

It will also complete the procurement of core TD-SCDMA equipment before end-May and terminals will be put into place before end-October.

China is widely believed to be waiting for its homegrown TD-SCDMA technology to mature before opening up the 3G market to all 3G platforms and the government earlier reiterated that it will issue 3G licenses in time for operations to be launched by the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The paper cited analysts as saying that China Mobile's large-scale commercial deployment for TD-SCDMA indicates that the government has 'indirectly' issued the TD-SCDMA license.

Li Yuan, an analyst with China International Capital Corp, said China Mobile is likely to mainly operate the TD-SCDMA networks after the roll out of 3G services.

The plan states that China Mobile will take over and combine the partially-completed TD-SCMDA networks of China Telecom in Shanghai and China Netcom in Beijing, though no further details on this were given, the report said.

Citing separate sources, the newspaper said China Telecom and China Netcom are expected to spend one bln yuan each on expanding their own TD-SCDMA networks in Baoding and Qingdao respectively.

TD-SCDMA, which China's Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co is developing with Siemens AG (nyse: SI - news - people ) (NYSE SI), is competing with foreign-developed standards WCDMA and CDMA 2000.

China Mobile Adds Record Subscribers for Fourth Month

By Mark Lee

Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) -- China Mobile Ltd., a company with more customers than the U.S. has people, added a record number of subscribers for a fourth consecutive month after expanding in rural areas.

The carrier gained 4.86 million users in January, taking its total to 306.1 million, China Mobile said on its Web site. The Beijing-based company added 4.83 million subscribers in December.

China Mobile, the world's largest wireless phone carrier by users, targeted the 800 million people living in rural areas as competition increased in the cities. An estimated 65 percent of people in the nation still don't own mobile phones, compared with about 32 percent in the U.S., according to industry groups.

``The market penetration in rural areas is about 12 to 15 percent, so demand from these users will continue to grow,'' said Victor Yip, a Hong Kong-based analyst at UOB Kay Hian Ltd. who has a ``buy'' rating on the stock. Yip has a 12-month share price estimate of HK$77.70 on the company's shares.

Accelerating subscriber growth helped China Mobile stock surge 83 percent last year, more than six times the gain in shares of the U.K.'s Vodafone Group Plc, the market leader by revenue. China Mobile's stock rose 2.6 percent to HK$76.75 at the midday break in Hong Kong today, compared with a 0.3 percent gain in the benchmark Hang Seng Index.

Capital Spending

China Mobile, which controls about two-thirds of the country's wireless market, said in August it was increasing capital spending by 17 percent to 83.3 billion yuan ($10.8 billion) in 2006 to expand networks in rural areas. The move enabled the company's subscriber growth to accelerate.

Rising demand from rural areas will enable China Mobile to sign up 62.5 million users this year, or more than 5 million a month, compared with 53.2 million users last year, Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Wendy Liu wrote in a report on Jan. 23.

``The company has the right strategy, focusing on the rural areas for growth,'' Teresa Chow, who helps manage $500 million at RBC Investment Management Asia in Hong Kong, said before China Mobile released its January user data. Use of wireless services in the biggest Chinese cities ``is already quite high,'' she said.

China Mobile may boost user growth with the introduction of a caller-pays billing system by its unit in Guangdong this month, said UOB Kay Hian's Yip. The unit said on Jan. 29 it will start waiving incoming call charges for some users from February.

Smaller rival China Unicom Ltd. said last week it signed up 1.38 million users in January, the highest monthly additions since May 2005, which may mean the company has stepped up marketing to boost growth, according to DBS Vickers Ltd. analyst Steven Liu.

Fixed Lines

``We need to watch Unicom's handset subsidy and marketing costs to see if they are increasing,'' Liu said on Feb. 16. ``Unlike China Mobile, Unicom's growth is not based on a focus on rural areas, as its networks are less extensive.''

China Mobile and Unicom are benefiting at the expense of traditional fixed-line service providers. Subscriber growth at China Telecom Corp. and China Netcom Group (Hong Kong) Ltd. is slowing as wireless operators cut rates and offer cheaper handsets.

China Telecom said today its user growth slowed last month due to ``intensified market competition from mobile operators.'' The Beijing-based company said on its Web site that it added 250,000 users in January, compared with 640,000 in December. The total number of users increased to 223.3 million as of the end of last month, China Telecom said.

3G Licenses

Fixed-line operators are seeking to enter the faster-growing mobile market by gaining licenses from the government for third- generation wireless services. China Netcom said the licenses may be issued before October, JPMorgan Chase & Co. said in a report on Feb. 14, following a meeting with the company's Chief Executive Officer Zuo Xunsheng.

The high-speed wireless licenses may be issued before the government finishes building test networks based on a domestic 3G technology, known as time division-synchronous code division multiple access, or TD-SCDMA, in October, JP Morgan said, citing Zuo.

Apart from plans to start 3G services, which allow faster downloads of music and video on mobile phones, China Telecom and China Netcom are seeking to sign up more broadband customers to offset declining fixed-line growth.

China Telecom gained 760,000 broadband users in January, bringing its total to 29.1 million. That was the first time the company has provided monthly additions for broadband users.

China Netcom does not provide monthly customer numbers.

About 35 percent of China's population own mobile phones, the Ministry of Information Industry said on Jan. 22. The U.S. had 201.7 million cell-phone subscribers at the end of 2005, according to the International Telecommunications Union.
