RAKUTEN Group Inc. announced it launched two new features of its Viber product in a bid to develop the messaging app into a one-stop-shop platform this year.
According to Rakuten Viber Chief Revenue Officer Cristina Constandache, their ambition is to help brands build awareness, generate interest, drive conversion down to taking care of the users and the after-sales care.
“Superapp is not a concept that is foreign to the Philippine market,” Constandache said during a dinner the firm hosted for reporters last Thursday.
“However, when it comes to Viber, what it means is that we want to maximize our utility and spending space in order to become a single gateway to manifold services, wherein users can do everything that they want or as many things as they want within one app—which happens to be the Viber—anything from ordering food, texting, paying bills, shopping. In a nut shell: minimum stats with a maximum value,” she added. Constandache cited studies that showed 71 percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions and 82 percent of organizations plan to implement a strategy to bring better value to customer through services. With users and businesses in mind, Viber’s updates provide a better customer experience and brand engagement.
Growth engine
RAKUTEN Viber Senior Director for Asia Pacific David Tse said the debut of these recent offerings “is a very important growth engine” for the company, as Rakuten Viber saw tremendous growth in the Philippines last year. Tse said the number of its users increased at 22 percent, 19 percent of who sent messages in group chats.
He added that the monthly active users in the retail sector surged by 106 percent.
The platform is beloved by users and brands here, apparently, with 603 percent increase in transactional business messages sent, 83 percent hike in conversational message, 11 percent growth in promotional business message and 34 percent surge in new chatbots.
“These growths tell us we are on the right track in always prioritizing our customers,” he stressed.

Rakuten Symphony likes to name all its products with ‘Sym’ as the first syllable. Accordingly its full platform is called Symworld and that’s what it’s striving to be fully supported by the biggest public cloud provider. The only surprise in this announcement is that it took so long since, according to Rakuten Symphony, Symworld ‘offers a total blueprint of cloud-native telecom operations with pre-integration of more than 110 cloud-native functions’.
For any operators already working with both Rakuten Symphony and AWS this will presumably be good news and the former will presumably be hoping the move makes its proposition more attractive to potential new customers.

What can the telecom industry learn from the “dot-bomb” collapse of Internet companies in 2000?
Rakuten Symphony CMO Geoff Hollingworth believes that a great progress can be made in a tough economic time. As he writes in Pipeline Magazine, “Change comes faster than usual and is unavoidable when times are hard. I predict we will see hard business decisions made around sustainability, supply chain industrialization, smart use of cloud, and improved automation and network delayering.”
The dot-bomb reset the internet industry to grow and become the force it is today. A more recent example of the industry’s response to hard times is the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world staying home, telecom transformed and modernized its customer care support centers so that employees could work remotely without an impact on their customers. Now the executives that made those decisions can look back on that time and see that significant progress was made.
The way that 2023 is shaping up will force the industry to make more radical, harder business decisions, Hollingworth writes. This change doesn’t necessarily hinge on a particular technology like Open RAN—instead, change needs to happen faster. He continues, “If we are all being honest, the industry is no longer keeping up with the speed of technology happening outside of our bubble. I predict that for many operators, a lot of the projects they’ve been dancing with—these ‘impractical ideas’—could very likely turn out to be growth engines.”
2023 is looking like a tough economic year and that will force the telecom industry to change. But these changes will reset the smart MNOs for the challenges of the future. Geoff anticipates that executives will look back at 2023 and see how being forced to make hard decisions made great things come from a hard environment.

Tokyo, December 8, 2022 - Rakuten Group, Inc. announced that it has been awarded the Information Technology Award (Sustainability Field) in the 40th IT Awards for FY2022 organized by the Japan Institute of Information Technology.
The IT Awards are presented by the Japan Institute of Information Technology to enterprises, groups, organizations and individuals whose outstanding efforts in driving business innovation through advanced IT applications have produced results, contributing to the creation of businesses for operations in domestic industry and government institutions, creating and promoting effective business models and improving productivity.
Going forward, Rakuten aims to further improve its services to meet customer needs and contribute to the development of industry and society through information technology.
Below is the overview of the project that received the award.
Development of an advanced carbon neutral logistics system
Project overview: Rakuten Group has built and deployed an AI dispatching system in the field of logistics. By bringing the system in-house, Rakuten has succeeded in optimizing vehicle dispatching and delivery routes and reducing distances travelled in delivering products, realizing a reduction in CO2 emissions. In addition, in order to avoid the large volume of calculations required for machine learning and automated calculations, Rakuten adopted a process using clustering in the initial step and then finding the optimal solution for each cluster. This method enabled solutions even with complex requirements to be found in a short time, making the system practical for use in the everyday coordination of deliveries.
In the Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper and Rakuten Zenkoku Super services where the system has been deployed, based on the results of the first month of operation, travel distances were reduced by 15% (approximately 860,000 km per year), reducing CO2 emissions by 170 tons per year. Further increases in efficacy are expected in the future as system deployment expands.
Reason for award: In addition to demonstrating pioneering methodology and results towards achieving carbon neutrality, Rakuten received this IT Award in recognition of its cross-organizational collaboration between the Logistics Business Department, departments promoting AI and Big Data technologies and the Rakuten Institute of Technology in the successful deployment of AI technology in the field of logistics, an emerging field of system development.

The world is in the midst of dynamic technological evolution and social change, and is undergoing a major transformation historically. 2023 will also be a year in which we will be required to take on the challenge of further innovation.
In 2022, the Rakuten Group’s annual global GMV will increase by 23% year-on-year to over 33 trillion yen, and its global membership will continue to grow to approximately 1.7 billion people, making it one of the world’s largest Internet companies. The Internet service business continues to perform strongly, including domestic e-commerce, which continues to grow in double digits both in terms of sales and gross merchandise value. In the Fintech service business, the number of Rakuten Cards issued, the number of Rakuten Bank accounts, and the number of Rakuten Securities accounts, in particular, are leading the industry significantly. We have created new value in a wide range of fields through our unique Rakuten Ecosystem (economic zone), which is unparalleled in the world.
This ecosystem has entered a phase of rapid expansion in terms of the number of users and gross merchandise value thanks to synergies with Rakuten Mobile, a mobile carrier service. In 2023, the evolution of the ecosystem will accelerate in this mobile business by further expanding our own line area and delivering more affordable, convenient and fulfilling services. It will also be the year when the global expansion of the telecommunications platform business, centered on the world’s first end-to-end “fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network,” will begin in earnest.
Under the vision of continuing to be a global innovation company, the Rakuten Group will continue to deliver new value to society through further evolution of the Rakuten Ecosystem, a strong organization made up of diverse human resources from more than 100 countries and regions, and technology. I would like to continue.
We have always looked to the future and have continued to take on challenges. Looking to the future, all of our employees will work together to take on the challenge of further growth by demonstrating our innovation power, operational capabilities, and creativity.
