Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket

Japan’s drone economy is finally taking off!
In November 2022, Rakuten unveiled Rakuten Drone Gateway, a new platform aimed at drone operators and businesses looking to leverage drone services. In addition to job matching, the platform looks to be a one-stop shop for everything one might need to get flying.
The launch came at a similar time as the recent changes to Japan’s drone regulations were applied, allowing pilots to operate in more areas in an official capacity. Lacking structured regulations, drone flight in Japan has long been a tricky area to navigate, requiring extensive paperwork for each individual flight. The newly relaxed regulations paint a promising picture for the future of Japan’s drone services industry.
Matching new demand with new talent
Rakuten Drone Gateway is, at its core, a matching platform. The service primarily seeks to match professional drone operators with companies and individuals who need drone services.
Drone technology has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years, and demand for drone-assisted services is on the rise – as is the very job title, professional drone operator. The industry is still in its infancy and yet to settle on an effective way to match these drone pros with those needing their services.
Those services include jobs like aerial photography and land surveying, as well as inspections of large-scale infrastructure and construction projects – to name just a few. Drone technology eliminates the need for expensive plane and helicopter trips, or to send human surveyors scaling treacherously high towers.
Starting November 2022, Japanese companies can post whatever they need done on Rakuten Drone Gateway – including job details such as location and pay – which can be browsed and applied for by certified drone pilots registered on the platform.
The platform is also designed to work as a hub to empower drone operators with all the data necessary for a successful flight.
In addition to maps, aerial photography and topographic data for all of Japan, the platform shows real-time no-fly zones such as airports and other areas that are off-limits under specific conditions. In-app rain and weather forecasts will also help operators adjust their plans on the fly.
The skies of Japan opening up to drones
The launch of Rakuten Drone Gateway lands during an exciting time for drone enthusiasts in Japan.
In June 2022, the Japanese government launched a drone registry for all drones above 100g in weight, requiring all registered devices to be equipped with a remote ID function. The move allows for better management of drones, where previously a lack of regulation had made any meaningful control in the industry difficult.
In December the same year, the government took another major step in officially allowing the operation of so-called ‘level four’ drone flights. The relaxed regulations now allow owners to operate their drones beyond line of sight – something previously only possible in unpopulated areas.
Following the change in the law, registered drones must undergo rigorous safety checks and pilots will be required to undergo testing to obtain a license and renew it every three years. The move clears the way for experienced pilots to expand their scope of operations, while also encouraging newcomers to try their wings.
Major progress for Rakuten’s drone businesses
Rakuten is in a unique position to ride Japan’s new wave of drone demand, having carried out countless drone service trials ranging from drone deliveries to remote areas and mountain peaks.
In fact, Rakuten is one of the first companies in Japan to leverage drones for actual business operations: In 2021, Rakuten Mobile began deploying drones to inspect completed base stations, an operation that saves hours when compared to having human engineers scale each tower.
Rakuten’s insurance businesses have also embraced airborne tech, employing drones to carry out inspections of clients’ property to survey the damage following natural disasters, allowing for swift payouts for insurance customers.
The company also supports the training of new drone pilots: The Rakuten Drone Academy launched in 2021, with one school in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, and the second in Tokyo. The academy teaches a range of professional drone skills, from aerial photography to basic drone maintenance.
With local regulations starting to mature and companies like Rakuten hard at work empowering industry players, drone operators in Japan have an exciting time ahead of them.

January has ushered in a small flurry of 5G rollout announcements as deployments of the latest generation of mobile technology continue. Although it’s still early days, 2023 has already seen one of Open RAN’s early proponents finally launch services, albeit with little fanfare due to its limited scope initially.
Like Rakuten Mobile in Japan and Dish in the US, Germany’s 1&1 is pushing ahead with the deployment of a cloud-native, Open RAN network – with more than a little help from Rakuten Symphony.
1&1, Germany’s fourth mobile network operator, has launched a 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service in Frankfurt and Karlsruhe. A 5G smartphone service is set to follow in the summer.
Only three antennas are currently in operation, but 1&1 hopes to increase this to 50 over the coming weeks with a focus on cities including Hamburg, Essen, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Munich and Freiburg. As things stand, 235 sites are under construction and the operator has a target of 1,000 masts this year.
1&1 also says it will be able to meet the license obligation to achieve 50% population coverage with its 5G network by the end of 2030. By then, it plans to have 12,600 masts and more than 500 data centers in operation.
The United Internet-owned operator is keen to underscore its Open RAN credentials, emphasizing that it is not locked into the “innovation cycle” of one particular vendor. As well as software from Rakuten, Mavenir and Altiostar, it is deploying servers from Dell and Supermicro, routers from Cisco, and antennas from NEC and Communications Components (CCI).

1&1 recently launched 5G services via fixed wireless access (FWA) technology in Frankfurt and Karlsruhe.
The new offering, dubbed “5G at home”, is a replacement for conventional DSL, fiber optic or cable internet connections. 1&1 said it will initially offer three different packages with tariffs ranging from 20-40 euros. All tariffs offer up to 500 Mbps in download and up to 40 Mbps in upload speeds.
At the beginning, servers from Dell and Supermicro, routers from Cisco, software from Rakuten, Mavenir and Altiostar as well as antennas from NEC and Communications Components (CCI) will be used, 1&1 has said.

Spain's ride-hailing Cabify plans IPO within 12-15 months -El Confidencial
MADRID, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Spanish ride-hailing app Cabify plans to list its shares on the stock market within 12 to 15 months, local news website El Confidencial reported on Tuesday citing unidentified sources closed to the company's management.
The company's valuation would be close to 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion), El Confidencial added, citing other unidentified financial sources.
The company, which has a large presence in Spain and Latin America, is one of Spain's few unicorns, or start-up companies with a valuation above 1 billion euros.

January 2023 - Spain - Cabify plans to go public in a year
Cabify plans to take its shares public in a period of 12 to 15 months.
The valuation of the company would be close to 2,000 million euros (2,200 million dollars).
After being affected by the restrictions imposed by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, at the end of 2021 the company reached profitability again. The profitability has been maintained in 2022, and this gives the company the option to go public.
Cabify recently turned 10, and currently has 1,200,000 drivers in Spain and in Latin America.

First: The biggest net income-driver is cost-cutting and the biggest cost-cutting will come from reduced roaming-fee’s.
Second: Near all investments, which increase costs at once, are done – additional investments do only increase the deprecations.
Third: Rakuten Symphony with low revenues in the past will increase the revenues in 2023 between $ 500 und $ 600.
But the facts are: Asia Nikkei were paid for lies and nonsense from competiors of Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Syhmphony like a lot of similar criminals around the world.

Japan Telecoms Industry Report 2023-2028: IoT and 5G Present Lucrative if Unclear Opportunities for Key Players - ResearchAndMarkets.com
The Japanese three-player mobile market is a remarkably stable market, however it is about to be rocked by fourth market entrant - Rakuten Mobile - looking to follow the steps of successful new entrants launch such as Free in France and Reliance Jio in India. Rakuten has set an ambitious target of being the first cloud-native mobile network.
According to our benchmark study of mobile data pricing, Japan had among the biggest cost reduction per GB over the last 3 years, while India has the lowest rate in the world with just a few cents per GB. Many operators are looking to Rakuten Mobile's trailblazing strategy of deploying its network using a cloud-native mobile network blueprint to lower its rollout costs. The traditional telecommunications model is becoming increasingly hard to sustain amidst declining operating margins and continued expectations for cheaper services and more value inclusion.
The analyst forecasts Rakuten could capture up to 10m subscribers in 3 years by offering lower pricing, e-Commerce bundling and other lifestyle services to its existing 100 million Rakuten customers, while KDDI and to a lesser extent NTT and Softbank already embarked on such journey.

The challenge for network operators is “massive” as we transition to 5G, says Rabih Dabboussi, chief revenue officer of Japan-based disruptor Rakuten Symphony. He hopes operators won’t miss the chance to disrupt their thinking, their operating model, and the way they look at revenues. Because for the first time in three decades, he says there’s an alternative to “the old legacy, standardised technology stack and equipment from typical vendors”. Francis Haysom of Appledore Research and VanillaPlus’s Jeremy Cowan take turns to quiz the vendor who’s also a mobile operator.

Affiliate marketing no longer needs to exist in a silo. With no shortage of challenges edging their way into businesses spanning many sectors, Nick chatted with Hello Partner about how utilising the tools we have around us, and expanding our horizons across the entire partnerships sphere can make our industry come out on top in a post-cookie world.
Rakuten Advertising is constantly looking to push the envelope and expand the horizons of what affiliate marketing can do for marketers and overall performance. This year, we have recognised that this is not just exclusive to the affiliate space for you, as you joined us at the Influencer Marketing Show as a headline partner. What is it that is exciting you about the influencer space?
To drive maximum growth, every affiliate marketer must look ahead to understand how their category and customers will evolve. The influencer space is growing at such a rapid pace that there’s so much to be excited about. When it comes to affiliate, influencers are an increasingly important publisher category for advertisers, and we’re only going to continue to see that trend grow.
Influencers have taken the authenticity and the contextual relevance of affiliate and brought it to a whole new level. Audiences relate to influencers as individuals. They see themselves in and even look up to influencers, creating a deep and strong bond that simply cannot be replicated with other publisher types. With the inevitable removal of the third-party cookie, advertisers will look to affiliate as a way to target and connect with their audiences contextually. I expect influencers to be an essential publisher type in a post-cookie world.
