Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
We announced in the last Mobile World Congress that AT&T is working with Rakuten Symphony on a few disruptive applications around the digital workflow on the operation for wireless and wireline, the same as Telefónica in the UK and Telefónica in Germany. Our first big breakthrough was an integrated stack.
In the heart of Europe, in Germany, we are the supplier for a new greenfield operator called 1&1. I told the CEO of 1&1 that my dream is to build Rakuten 2.0 in Germany, so we are building the entire fabric of this network. It has been an amazing journey to take all the lessons learned from Japan and be able now to bring them to Germany. We are in the early stages, but I am really optimistic to see what the future will hold for Open RAN as a whole for Symphony.
Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony have opened a well-needed, healthy debate in the industry about radio access supplier alternatives and diversification that we need in order to move away into a software-driven network. We feel that is a big accomplishment for us.

Rakuten Advertising: Evolving channels and customer acquisition

Evolving channels and customer acquisition: how to attract and re engage the consumer
The sales cycle used to be a simple case of “attract, engage, convert”. Get a customer’s attention, propose or promote a sale, take the money. This is not the case anymore Google plans to phase out third-party cookies on Chrome browsers in 2023 in response to consumers’ increased demands on security and this will have a significant impact on the way marketers appeal to new and existing customers. This means content publishers and affiliate channels are now more important than ever in the fight for consumer attention.

"You were aiming for 12 million applications, but do you have any details such as the target time?
Mr. Mikitani
I think that it will progress with the expansion of the network.
We are also conducting marketing by region, so we would like to announce our acquisition target at the appropriate time.
Compared to the initial speed of Rakuten Card, which is currently approaching 30 million, we believe that it is still overwhelmingly fast."

The Japanese ecommerce market is estimated to register a growth of 6.9% to reach JPY22.4 trillion ($194.3 billion) in 2022, according to a new report from GlobalData.
Japan is the fourth leading ecommerce market globally. China is the top market with total sales of $2.1 trillion, followed by the US with $1.5 trillion, and the UK with $292.1 billion.
The Japanese ecommerce market is dominated by domestic online retailers such as Rakuten and Mercari. However, international ecommerce retailers such as Amazon and Yahoo are gaining popularity among the Japanese consumers. Online shopping events such as White Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday have supported the ecommerce growth in the country.
In addition, nearly 70% of Japanese consumers have shopped online in the past month, while only 8% indicated that they never shopped online.
“The Japan e-commerce market has registered sustainable growth over the last five years supported by high mobile and online penetration and high consumer preference for online transactions,” GlobalData banking and payments lead analyst Ravi Sharma said.

How Open RAN milestones are being met is as notable as what milestones are being met.
Last year Telefonica O2 selected NEC as its prime integrator for its global Open RAN program, spanning initiatives in Spain, Germany, Brazil and the UK.
Last week (August 30th) saw the announcement of VMO2’s first live Open RAN site in the UK, “in the Northamptonshire region”. Initially, this provides 4G coverage, with 5G to follow “imminently”, according to our sources. This initial site is a full macro site, capable of supporting rural in-fill or dense urban environments. (In the English Midlands, Northamptonshire has a population of around 750,000 people, with county town Northampton home to just over 200,000.)
VMO2 is benchmarking the site’s performance against conventional site KPIs – call drop ratios, throughput – and our understanding is that the site meets or exceeds the required KPIs. Conclusion: Open RAN sites work just as well as conventional ones.
The VMO2 milestone provides just such evidence. NEC as lead SI, Rakuten Symphony (centered on the former Altiostar’s open vRAN), and a number of other vendors – radio units, cloud platform, x86 platform – have been able to deliver a fully-functioning site using open RAN specifications within around 6 months.
The latest evidence that a newly formed ecosystem of vendors can collaborate quickly and effectively should give heart to the Open RAN pioneers and give even the more sceptical pause for thought. More choice is what open RAN fundamentally aims to provide – and that can only work if the choices made can actually collaborate effectively.
For VMO2, there remain many further questions and phases to go through: additional sites, integration into wider operational support systems and processes, further operational proving. Though a modest achievement at one level (Rakuten Mobile has 44,000 macro open RAN sites), VMO2’s first live open RAN site in the UK is nonetheless significant, as much for how it was achieved, as for what has been achieved. We look forward to further progress reports.
