PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S Electoral Commission is conducting round-the-clock shifts to get vote counting for the general election complete by the end of next week. And counting in Simbu and Eastern Highlands only started yesterday, with officials being trained at the last minute.
3 weeks of polling to choose a new 111-member parliament has now finished but counting is slow in many electorates and the PNGEC is struggling to meet the 26 July deadline. (...)
Meanwhile, the PNGEC website last night was declaring 14 candidates elected, with all major political parties represented in their number.
After days of trailing 2 independents, Belden Namah slipped into the lead yesterday as counting moved to ballot boxes from his strongholds in the West Sepik electorate of Vanimo-Green River. (...)
Namah will need plenty of preferences but it seems he will be returned – and become an assertive challenger for the prime ministership.
Amongst the MPs already elected there are also prime ministerial aspirants Don Polye (Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party), Peter O’Neill (People’s National Congress) and possibly Paul Tiensten (People's United Assembly).
Other MPs declared elected last night were Sam Basil (PNG Party), Joel Sungi (National Alliance), Allan Marat (Melanesian Liberal Party), John Simon (National Alliance), James Marape (People’s National Congress), Charlie Benjamin (People’s National Congress), Paul Isikiel (People’s National Congress), Ronny Knight (New Generation Party), Julius Chan (People's Progress Party), Ben Micah (People's Progress Party) and Byron Chan (People’s Progress Party).
Bubbling under - on the verge of winning - are William Duma (United Resources Party), Michael Somare (National Alliance), Puka Temu (Our Development Party), Anderson Agiru (People's United Assembly), Philip Nai (Triumph Heritage Empowerment) and Charles Abel (People's National Congress).
State of the Parties (members elected & leading):
People’s National Congress – Peter O’Neill: 23
Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party – Don Polye: 13
PNG Party – Belden Namah: 8
National Alliance – Michael Somare: 8
United Resources Party – William Duma: 5
People’s Progress Party – Julius Chan: 5
Independents: 10

O’Neill is not alarmed!
By PETER KORUGL
CARETAKER Prime Minister Peter O’Neill is not at all disturbed by the return to Parliament of Sir Michael Somare who is waiting to be declared.
“I am not particularly concerned about Somare (Sir Michael) or his return or what he has to say,” Mr O’Neill told the Post-Courier.
“Nobody is above the law, including Prime Ministers or former Prime Ministers. We will wait and see how the elections unfold in the coming days.”
He was responding to a statement by Sir Michael in this paper yesterday saying he will make it his business to become the next Prime Minister and lock up Mr O’Neill, all his cabinet ministers and Speaker Jeffery Nape on contempt of court charges.
The contempt charges he referred to relate to the Supreme Court orders stemming from the separate East Sepik references last year following the ousting of Sir Michael’s Government on August 2, 2011.
“Let’s wait and see how the people have spoken,” Mr O’Neill said. “It is clear that the political parties in (the current) Government are doing well. This reflects that the people accept the policies that we have implemented.”
He said the people have indicated they have confidence in his People’s National Congress- led government and this is shown by the way they have spoken through ballots around the country.
“We are doing well right across the country. PNC has four declared already, we expect another two in Tewai-Siassi Open seat and Alotau Open seat. We are leading in many of the seats,” Mr O’Neill said.
Mr O’Neill took time off yesterday to go to Port Moresby Dental School at the Taurama Medical Faculty to have his tooth filled.
“I have always used the medical services provided at the school,” he said.
“I use the local medical services when I need it – that is why we will continue to focus on our free medicare policy, free education policy, infrastructure development, law and order, business and agriculture.”
Apart from Mr O’Neill’s own election victory, his party had also picked up seats through James Marape in Tari Pori, Paul Isikiel for Markham and Charlie Benjamin for Manus Provincial by 5pm yesterday. PNC has endorsed 89 candidates throughout the country and apart from the four declared, it is leading in 18 other electorates.
PNC is followed by Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party with three declared members out of the 72 candidates it endorsed. Apart from party leader Don Pomb Polye who won his Kandep Open seat back, Philip Undialu took the Koroba-Lake Kupiago seat and Douglas Tomuriesa clinched the Kiriwina Goodenough Open seat. THE party is leading in 10 other seats around the country.
Somare’s National Alliance party picked up one seat through Patrick Pruaitch in Aitape Lumi while Sir Michael is waiting to be declared winner. The party is leading in seven other seats around the country.
“NA is doing well but it’s largely confined to the two Sepik provinces,” Mr O’Neill said. “Let us not talk about forming the Government as yet.”

CENTRAL Bougainville MP and Minister for Communications in the National Government, Jimmy Miringtoro says Panguna Mine issues are still important and landowners must be prepared to take negotiations to the next level.
Panguna Mine issues has always become a topic of interest for the international community, the media, and the people of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Bougainville have been encouraged and assured by the MP, that negotiations have to change tactics now so that, Bougainvilleans would benefit from the mines spin-offs .
“The Panguna Mine alone contributed a lot in the development of PNG as a whole, and the revenue from the mine built bridges schools airports and roads.” Mr Miringtoro said.
“It even contributed in building the parliament house in Waigani.” he said.
He said leaders in that time were quite ignorant of the mining impacts to the environment, and if they were cautious enough the Bougainville crisis could not have eventuated.
“PNG is on a brink of coming to a standstill, because we have a lot of mines now but we are not feeling an impact, and no major development is taking place, to prove that these mines are making profit and revenue they are not even improving the standard of living for us Papua New Guineans. Mr Miringtoro said.
“Panguna was forced to close because leaders that time and the company (BCL) were not able to listen to peoples grievances and that are a lesson to us all both leaders and people that we need to listen to each other.” Mr Miringtoro said.
Mr Miringtoro said Panguna land owners and National Government must critically talk and consider everyone’s opinion if they are thinking of reopening the mine.
“People in Panguna were not given good water supply housing and health facilities but their land was taken out forcefully from them.” Mr Miringtoro said.
“When the NEC comes to Arawa next month for the meeting that will be an opportunity for landowners to talk face to face with the National government.” he said.
-JSB terminiert (Mitte August)
-JSB Meeting (um Mitte Sep)
-BOC Office in Arawa eröffnet (Ende Sep)
-Start der BCA Rev.
-BIGBOCBANG ;-)))))))))
