The School of Life is not affiliated to any religious, educational, charitable or other organisations. It declares itself to be a place ‘free from dogma’, where participants are ‘directed towards a variety of ideas—from philosophy to literature, psychology to the visual arts—that tickle, exercise and expand your mind’ and where participants can 'meet other curious, sociable and open-minded people in an atmosphere of exploration and enjoyment'.[1]

Alain de Botton co-founded The School of Life
The School of Life was founded by philosopher Alain de Botton[2] and Sophie Howarth, a former curator from Tate Modern, in collaboration with a number of writers, artists and educators. It is currently staffed by Morgwn Rimel (Director), Caroline Brimmer, Melissa Byrd and Vassili Christodoulou. The faculty includes philosophers Mark Vernon, Robert Rowland Smith and Nigel Warburton, writers John Armstrong, Charles Fernyhough, John-Paul Flintoff, Catherine Blyth and Rebecca Abrams. Ambassadors for the project include photographer Martin Parr, psychotherapist Brett Kahr, journalist Rosie Boycott and publishers Patrick Walsh and Simon Prosser.
Classes[edit]
The School of Life offers evening classes and workshops which are designed to provide useful insights around the big themes in life.[4] These might explore ways to improve relationships or find more satisfaction in one's working life, or even how to be cool.[5] These classes are devised by leading authors, artists, actors and academics, combining their own experiences with ideas from great thinkers of the past to offer participants intelligent and playful ways to interpret the world, and their place within it.[4]

Das "School of Life" Konzept sehe ich, soweit ich das bis dahin überblicke, jedoch recht ambivalent. Der Ansatz, sich für eine angewandte philosophische Praxis einzusetzen bzw. diese neben dem theoretisch abstrakten Teil ebenfalls zur Geltung zu bringen kann man nur begrüßen. Genauso wie die Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage nach den Vorrausetzungen eines guten (individuellen) Lebens, die zumindest in der Philosophie seit der Antike doch recht verweist zu sein scheint.
Schriften wie Senecas " Über das glückliche Leben" oder Epikurs "Wege zum Glück" wird man in der Philosophie der Moderne jedenfalls vergeblich suchen.
Diese Themen hat man lieber der Psychologie und esoterischen New Age Bewegungen überlassen, was schade ist. Die Philosophie hätte hier nämlich durchaus etwas anzubieten.
Nichtsdestotrotz denke ich allerdings, dass die beste Schule des Lebens immer noch das Leben selbst ist. Die Bezeichnung "school of life" ist mir dann doch etwas zu ambitioniert.
Ist das hier wirklich ein Beispiel von praktisch angewandter Philosophie, oder eher ein Beispiel einer tollen Geschäftsidee? Angesichts der angebundenen merchandiseshops und der Seminarkosten scheinen sich diese Dinge zumindest zu vermischen. Nicht, dass ich ein Problem damit hätte, die Frage ist nur, ob die Heilsversprechen einer praktisch angewandten Philosophie durch eine verkürzende popphilosophische Darstellung eingelöst werden können?
Handelt es sich hierbei tatsächlich um angewandte Philosphie, oder um den Komsum von popphilosophischem fastfood? Man müsste sich weiter damit beschäftigen, um diese Frage zu beantworten. Stellen sollte man sie allerdings.
Um Philosophie überhaupt einem größerem Publikum zugänglich zu machen, einen Einstieg zu ermöglichen, und dazu einzuladen und zu ermutigen in spielerischer Weise damit zu verfahren und im und auf den Alltag anzuweden, ist das aber grundsätzlich sicher eine tolle Sache und ein sympathisches Projekt.
Hinsichtlich des Anspruches eine Lebensschule zu sein, würde ich dann allerdings doch einige Zweifel anmelden.
(Nur mal als Feedback und gedanklicher Zwischenruf am Rande. Diese ganzen "Komplexeste-Sachverhalte-Und-Ideen-In-5-Min-Clips" sind ja grundsätzlich nicht völlig verkehrt wenn man sie als apettithäppchen betrachtet und nicht die eigentliche Auseindersetzung mit den Inhalten ersetzt, die sich eben nicht in 5 min erschließen, ansonsten sehe ich den Nutzen eher ins negative Umkippen. Darüber sollte man sich grundsätzlich im klaren sein.
In diesem Falle kann sowas dann auch tatsächlich sehr bereichernd sein. Die Clips oben sind dann wirklich sehr ansprechend präsentiert und aufbereitet.)
