A Papua New Guinea corruption task force has put 33 prominent citizens - including politicians - on a watch list, telling the national airline to monitor their travel.
The Task Force Sweep chairman, Sam Koim, told AAP he sent a letter to Air Niugini chief executive Wasantha Kumarasiri last week requesting that the movements of 33 bureaucrats and politicians to be monitored.
PNG’s National newspaper reports former planning minister Paul Tiensten is on the list, as well as prominent business figure, Eremas Wartoto, and national planning secretary, Ruby Zarriga.
Mr Koim won’t confirm which names were on the list.
In September, Mr Tiensten fled to Australia after he was approached by the task force for questioning into more than four million US dollars released to Mr Wartoto to set up an airline.
Task Force Sweep, which was set up by the PNG Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, as one of his first acts of office, says the airline doesn’t exist.
Last month on his return to PNG, Mr Tiensten was charged with misappropriation of funds, conspiracy to defraud the state and abuse of office.

Das vestehe ich nicht ganz. Nach meinen Internetrecherchen gibt es die Airline. Vielleicht ist dies Taskforce ja selbst tief verwickelt......?
Lt. Zeitungsartikel existiert die neue Fluggesellschaft nicht und Herr Tiensten hat sich nach Australien abgesetzt.

Air Niugini soll nun evtl. bei ihr gebuchte Flüge von 33 Personen an die Task Force melden, damit man ihrer Habhaft werden kann.

The primary location is the Bougainville region of Papua New Guinea, an island with areas of large proven mineral reserves. Colourfully dubbed by some geologists`s as a `Treasure Island` Bougainville was scoured by German geologists in the 1980s. subsequent to the advent of mining activity in the 1970s by Rio Tinto. The Geologisches Institut in Hanover contains in excess of 10,000 pages of research on Bougainville`s 9000 sq kilometres of land.
The directors expect to enter into letters of intent with at least one of these asset targets, within the very near future. The company will keep shareholders fully informed consistent with confidentiality agreements as matters progress.
Talks are also advanced in the other targeted areas, including the energy and salvage reclamation business in Europe.

Codelco sieht 2012 hohe Kupferpreise
SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--Die Kupferpreise werden sich 2012 voraussichtlich weiter auf einem hohen Niveau bewegen, da die Nachfrage weiter das Angebot übersteigen werde.
Dies ist die Einschätzung von Diego Hernandez, CEO des chilenischen Kupferkonzerns Codelco. Er geht davon aus, dass China nach wie vor viel Kupfer verbrauchen wird. Selbst wenn China nur noch um 8% wachsen sollte, wird die Nachfrage sehr stark bleiben , sagt er. Er verwies darauf, dass das Land derzeit rund 38% der jährlichen globalen Kupferproduktion verbrauche.
Zwar wollte Hernandez keine konkrete Preisprognose abgeben, er schätzt aber, dass sich die Preise im kommenden Jahr über der Marke von 3 USD/lb bewegen werden. Seiner Meinung nach werden die Preise nicht auf die Niveaus der 1990er Jahre fallen. Wir sind sehr weit weg von den historischen Preisen, die wir in der Branche zwischen rund 0,80 USD und 1,50 USD/lb gesehen haben , sagte er.
Das Angebot werde in den kommenden Jahren knapp bleiben, da die meisten der großen Kupferminen in die Jahre gekommen seien, wodurch die Erzgradierungen sänken und somit die Kosten zur Produktion der gleichen Menge stiegen. Hinzu komme, dass es bei Projekten, durch die neue Kapazitäten an den Markt kommen sollten, Verzögerungen gebe bzw, dass Kapazitätserweiterungen nicht die gewünschten zusätzlichen Mengen ergeben hätten. Außerdem sie die Escondida-Mine bestreikt worden und in Grasberg werde noch immer gestreikt, ergänzte er.
Die beiden erstgenannten Minen befinden sich in Chile und werden von BHP Billiton Ltd bzw Antofagasta kontrolliert. Die indonesische Mine Grasberg gehört zu Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc.

Despite many years of mineral and petroleum activities in PNG, the host provinces have very little to show for all the benefits derived from the projects, the mining and petroleum seminar was told in Port Moresby last week.
General manager, community and external affairs for Oil Search Ltd Willie Kupo said this when talking about social programmes and development.
He said half of the children aged between eight and 14 years old did not attend schools and a third of births took place outside of a medical facility.
He said the people were still without clean water supply and other basic infrastructure.
Kupo said proper planning and coordination were key factors in ensuring that development funds generated from mining and petroleum activities were put into proper use.
“Public servants are not properly trained, so we need to start looking at ways to provide capacity building for them,” he said.
Kupo said Oil Search Ltd, like all other major resource developers and operators in PNG, carried out a range of social development programmes in its project area that were not specifically mandated under any legislation.
He said the company had provided education sponsorship for students, donations and small scale sweat-equity projects, agriculture extension, community public health support, NGO support, local business development and management of tax credit funds.
Kupo said OSL spent K150 million a year on these various project, documented in various reports.
However, Kupo said what it was more important was how development funds from all sources are applied.
He said there should be coordination to ensure that there was sufficient planning and project management capabilities at all levels of government, as at present this was almost non-existent in most areas.
He said petroleum operators could be active partners with other stakeholders in carrying out social programmes to ensure that communities are tangibly better off after petroleum development than before.
He said companies cannot do this on their own and needed support from the local, provincial and national governments.
“Real social programme development would only happen if there is proper planning at all levels of government,” Kupo said.

Wenn schon die Longs den Überblick verlieren,wie soll dann ein interessiertet potentieller Neueinsteiger das Chancen/Risiko Verhältnis einschätzen können?
Das ist wohl der Grund dass BOC so weit unter seiner "Fair Value" notiert.
Die Supreme Court Decision ist für den 9 Dez. angekündigt, ist sie O´Neill positiv so werden die nächsten Schritte kurzfristig eingeleitet.
Käme es jedoch zu einem pro Somare Urteil so stünde wohl ein Misstrauensvotum gegen Somare mit anschliessender Wahl O`Neills als PNG PM an.Das würde eine Verzögerung von min. 1 Woche bedeuten.
