Modern discoveries in neuropsychology concerning the organization of memory allow us to hypothesize that some synaptical cortical and subcortical circuits form the seat of unconscious mental functions. The possibility of identifying, in the explicit and implicit memory respectively, the repressed and unrepressed unconscious opens new and stimulating perspectives for an integration of neuroscience with psychoanalysis, and for a possible anatomic localization of the functions of these two different forms of unconscious. This depends on a presupposition: that the experiences, emotions, phantasies, and defences that help organize an individual's unconscious psychic reality, from birth throughout life, are stored in the nervous structures concerning memory, both implicit and explicit. This is, after all, in line with Freud's conviction: 'latent conceptions, if we have any reason to suppose that they exist in the mind—as we had in the case of memory—let them be denoted by the term "unconscious"'

Ursprünglich (seit der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts) bedeutete „Sonata“ im Gegensatz zur Vokalkomposition (canzona) instrumentales „Klangstück“. Der Begriff bezeichnete anfangs weder ein spezifisches Formmodell noch einen bestimmten Kompositionsstil. Die ersten Werke mit dem Titel „Sonata“ stammen von italienischen Komponisten, wie z. B. Giovanni Gabrieli (1597, 1615). Gabrielis Sonaten hatten Vorbildfunktion durch die formale Anlage und ihren improvisatorischen Stil. Das Formmodell bestand aus mehreren klar beschriebenen Abschnitten in kontrastierendem Tempo und mit kontrastierender Textur.

Ein nach der Sonatensatzform gegliederter Satz besteht üblicherweise aus den folgenden drei Hauptteilen: Exposition, Durchführung und Reprise. Diese äußerliche Dreiheit sollte aber nicht den Blick darauf verstellen, dass dieSonatenhauptsatzform grundsätzlich dialektisch ist, dass sie also grundlegend auf der Idee einer Zweiheit, nämlich auf zwei Themenkomplexen beruht, die in einem allgemeinsten Sinne gegenteilig dialogisieren, bzw. kontrastieren (hierzu gehören Eigenschaften wie Staccato/Legato, Forte/Piano, Tonikal/Dominantisch, u. v. m.). Zu diesem Hauptkörper eines Sonatenkopfsatzes gesellen sich gattungsgeschichtlich zwei optionale Satzteile, die meist nicht eigentlich thematisch exponiertes Material enthalten, nämlich evtl. eine (langsame) Einleitung am Beginn und/oder ggf. eine Coda, die das Satzganze beschließt.
