The film depicts its namesake, Chappaqua, New York as a sleepy hamlet in Westchester County, symbolic of drug-free suburban childhood innocence as well as one of the film’s references to Native American culture. (The name Chappaqua derives from the Wappinger Algonquian people and translates to ‘laurel swamp.’)
“Chappaqua was written by Rooks, directed by Rooks and stars Rooks, all of which would normally add up to some kind of horrible vanity film. However - and it may have something to do with the use of the incredibly talented Robert Frank as cinematographer - Chappaqua turned out to be one of the more fascinating movies of the year, winning second prize at the Venice film festival over such established luminaries as Francois Truffaut and Roger Vadim.
And now, 33 years later, the film still holds up as one of the most interesting, if admittedly bizarre, movies you're likely to see....
