Tasty Baking to fall short of Q3 forecast (8:55 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX) --
Tasty Bakingsaid it expects a third-quarter loss of 17-to-21 cents per share,
including $2 million, or 18 cents per share, to pay for expansion. A survey of
analysts by Thomson First Call is forecasting earnings of 4 cents per share for
the Philadelphia confections maker. Tasty Baking said it's launching 23 new
direct store delivery routes. Shares rose 7 cents to $10.07 on Friday.
Smith Barney ups Merrill's Q3 earns forecast (8:27 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX)
-- Smith Barney analyst Ruchi Madan raised third-quarter earnings estimates for
Merrill Lynch to 90 cents a share from 81 cents, to reflect stronger than
anticipated private client and fixed income trading revenue and continued cost
controls. In addition, Madan sees evidence that the retail investor is coming
back and that the equity underwriting market is picking up. The brokerage
giant's stock closed Friday up 26 cents at $55.66.
Boyd Gaming's Q3 earns to miss estimates (8:12 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX) --
Boyd Gamingwarned that third-quarter earnings would miss expectations due to
weakness at its Stardust and Par-A-Dice properties. The casino operator expects
to earn 14 to 16 cents a share during the quarter ending September, below the
average analyst estimate compiled by Thomson First Call of 21 cents. Boyd said
it would release its full quarterly report on Oct. 20.
ATMI warns on sales, bottom line in third quarter (8:07 AM ET) LONDON
(AFX) -- ATMIwarned it expects a loss in the third quarter and revenue of $58
million, which is below the average analyst forecast. ATMI, a materials and
services supplier to semiconductor manufacturers, said it expects a loss per
share for the quarter of between 33 cents and 36 cents a share, partially
reflecting a write-down of assets in its technology business. Analysts polled by
Reuters Research expected revenue of $63.75 million, on average, and earnings of
2 cents a share for the quarter. "During the quarter, the company experienced a
continued slowness in its Technologies businesses. At the same time, our
Materials businesses did not perform as expected because of a number of timing
issues.," ATMI said. ATMI expects its materials business to accelerate in the
fourth quarter.
PeopleSoft expects to exceed Q3 expectations (7:34 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX)
-- PeopleSoftsaid third quarter earnings and revenue will top prior projections
as the benefits from the J.D. Edwards acquisition exceeds expectations. Analysts
surveyed by Reuters Research expect the business software company to earn 11
cents a share on revenue of $589.4 million, on average, during the quarter
ending September. The stock closed Friday up 81 cents at $19.81.
Duane Reade warns of earns, sales shortfall (7:15 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX)
-- Duane Readewarned that third-quarter earnings and sales would fall short of
expectations, due to continued economic weakness, the slowing growth rate of the
prescription sector and the business disruption resulting from the power outage
in the Northeast. The drugstore chain now expects earnings of 8 to 9 cents and
revenue of $338.6 million, vs. prior projections of 15 to 20 cents and $350
million, respectively. The stock closed Friday up 81 cents at $17.11.
Morgan Stanley ups earns estimates for Caterpillar (7:06 AM ET) NEW YORK
(AFX) -- Morgan Stanley analyst Stephen Volkman raised his 2003 earnings
estimate for Caterpillarto $3.10 a share from $2.90, and his 2004 forecast to $4
a share from $3.60, citing evidence of strong retail sales, low inventories and
improving industrial orders. He also raised his price target on the stock to $70
from $65, but maintained his "equal weight" rating as he believes much of the
earnings potential is already priced into the stock. The Dow industrials
component closed Friday up 68 cents at $73.38.
Knight Trading to top Q3 earns expectations (6:25 AM ET) NEW YORK (AFX)
-- Knight Trading Groupsaid third-quarter earnings would be above expectations
due to improving market volumes and strength in its institutional business. The
Nasdaq market maker now expects to earn 16 to 21 cents a share, vs. the average
analyst forecast compiled by Thomson First Call of 12 cents. The stock closed
Friday up 50 cents at $12.10.
