Historically, mobile carriers controlled who gained access to the secure element. That means they’ve ultimately been able to decide which apps a shopper can use for NFC payments in brick-and-mortar stores. NFC, which stands for near field communication, is a wireless technology that allows a piece of hardware to exchange data with another piece of hardware nearby simply by bringing them close or tapping them together. Since the payment data transferred in an NFC transaction previously had to come from the phone’s hardware secure element, a mobile carrier could decline any given app from using that data.

For example, Google Wallet’s tap-to-pay feature using NFC isn’t available on the vast majority of phones running on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile networks. That’s widely believed to be the result, at least in part, of the fact that those three carriers are the backers of a competitive app called the ISIS Wallet.

But with HCE, phones can bypass those carrier restrictions; an app can access and present the payment card information for an NFC payment from the cloud, which mobile carriers do not control. But the only way a purchase using HCE and NFC could take place is if the credit companies allowed the payment card details to be stored in the cloud. In short, HCE needed their stamp of approval.
One big U.S. bank already is. Capital One confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that it is currently working on adding tap-to-pay functionality to its Android app.

“Capital One is exploring HCE payment capabilities as part of our ongoing pursuit to provide secure, convenient payment solutions for our customers

oti Granted New U.S. Patent for Multi-Application Contactless Smart Card

ROSH PINA, ISRAEL--(Marketwired - Feb 26, 2014) - On Track Innovations Ltd. (NASDAQ: OTIV), a global provider of near field communication (NFC) and cashless payment solutions under the brand "oti," has been issued a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that enhances its innovations in the field of contactless smart cards.

The new U.S. patent No. 8,651,387, titled "Multi-Application Contactless Smart Card," describes a multi-application contactless smart card system and method that allows a user to select an application using a unique switching mechanism located on board the smart card. This innovation allows, for example, the accommodation of several 'application cards' on the same physical card.

Generally, smart cards support a single application, such as a particular credit card. However, today's consumers typically carry a variety of credit cards, including a combination of debit and credit cards, fuel cards, high-security identification and access-control cards, public transport payment cards, and drivers licenses. Carrying around these numerous cards can be cumbersome. However, oti's newly patented technology solves this problem by allowing contactless smart cards to support multiple uses.

According to BCC Research, smart card shipments are expected to reach 11.1 billion units or $7.3 billion in total sales by 2017. Smart card technology is a major driving force for the payment transaction market, since it allows customers to make secure payments. The rapid growth of contactless smart cards is being driven by a multitude of factors, including mobile device proliferation, new NFC standards, faster processing speeds, increased security concerns, and consumer demand for greater convenience.

The newly issued patent strengthens oti's growing presence in the contactless payment market, where oti's payment solutions have been certified by MasterCard, Visa, and others.

"Over the last 20 years, oti has continuously invested in innovation," noted Dimitrios Angelis, the company's chairman and CEO of oti America. "Through the patent system, we continue to create and protect the value of technology that has been developed by our world-class engineers. This patent supports our ongoing efforts to monetize our intellectual property through business operations, licensing and related arrangements."

On Track Innovations Ltd. (oti) (OTIV), a global provider of near field communication (NFC) and cashless payment solutions, has been named the silver medal winner of the 2014 PYMNTS Innovator Award in the "Best Comeback Story" category. Competitors in the category included Google, Blue Snap, Prosper and Earthport.

"We"re honored to be recognized for the tremendous product development and new major customer wins we achieved over the last year," said Ofer Tziperman, oti"s CEO. "This reflects how we"ve strengthened our board of directors and executive team, divested non-core businesses, and refocused on our core NFC-based payment technology.

"As a result, we have been able to reinvigorate our growth while reducing costs, as well as expand key relationships with industry leaders like with MasterCard and Visa, who have certified the oti payment products hence accelerated the adoption of oti"s technology in the NFC payment industry. We have been a comeback story of which every employee can be proud."

The winners of 2014 PYMNTS Innovator Award were selected among 500 companies, which were announced yesterday during the closing ceremony of The Innovation Project 2014. The two-day event, which was hosted by PYMNTS.com, highlighted the rapidly changing payments and commerce ecosystem, including the reinvention of retail, digital cash, security, global commerce and the consumer experience. Judges included executives from venture capitalist firms of Bain Capital Ventures, Continental Advisors, Commercial Ventures, Global Economics Group, NACHA, Menlo Ventures, General Atlantic, Market Platform Dynamics and Flybridge Capital Partners.

OTI GOES FISHING IN NFC WATERS
Oti has spent the last decade refocusing on what it does best: providing cashless payment solutions to such industries as vending, parking and petroleum that need them.

In fact, the company won the silver medal for Best Comeback Story at the PYMNTS Innovator Awards ceremony, held last week at Annenberg Hall on the campus of Harvard University. The event, on the final evening of Innovation Project 2014, is viewed as the most prestigious recognition awards in the payments industry and dozens of companies represented there vied for medals and other honors in more than 15 categories.

Key to this comeback has been the latest innovation in the company"s Near Field Communication (NFC)-based technology, which won certification last month for inclusion on Visa"s compliant products list. The new OTI WAVE is an NFC add-on for smartphones, tablets and PCs.

"With certification from two of the world"s largest payments networks – Visa and MasterCard – our WAVE technology platform is poised for large-scale implementation with banks, payment card providers, public transportation projects, loyalty and rewards programs" and others, said Ofer Tziperman, oti"s CEO.

The key fob device can also be used separately for electronic payment at mass transit gates and vending machines. When the pre-paid balance runs low, it can be plugged into a smartphone to add funds to its ePurse.

Such innovation and streamlining, including the sale of its ID card business, contributed to a rebound in sales and profit last year. Oti reported net income of $2.1 million in the third quarter, versus a net loss of $2.6 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 27 percent to $6.8 million, driven primarily by a more-than-doubling of sales of NFC readers to the U.S. market.

The U.S. market

The readers allow vendors to retrofit their machines to accept cashless payments, a development that tends to increase the value and number of purchases by consumers. There are currently about 9 million, mostly cash-operated vending machines in the U.S. that the company is targeting, Tziperman said.

Oti is also making inroads with its NFC devices into the U.S. parking market. The company has sold systems that allow local governments to collect fees and data more efficiently to Austin, Texas, and Concord, N.H.

"It"s a no-brainer for the municipality," said Tziperman. "It"s expensive to maintain meters."

The NFC devices, easily affixed by consumers to the windshields of their cars, for example, can help them avoid over- or under-spending at a meter, while allowing municipalities to reap data on revenue collection and the availability of spaces.

Fuel and beyond

Data is also critical to oti"s petroleum business, where it has introduced a "Moon Tag," or smart read-write strip mounted around the fuel inlet of a vehicle. A nozzle fitted with the reader automatically establishes communication when inserted into the vehicle. Once payment card details are verified, fuel can be dispensed.

This evolution in the company"s "EasyFuel Plus" system, originally designed for commercial fleet owners, makes it friendly to consumers, who will now be able to pay for fuel without swiping their credit card or going into a convenience store, Tziperman said. Loyalty points can also be awarded automatically.

Oti, founded 24 years ago, is enjoying a renaissance, according to Tziperman, who himself returned a few years ago to the company he helped to start.

"Our claim to fame is that we are not a startup," he said. "We have a wide array of patents, with proven field technology in 56 countries and a platform that can accommodate all niche markets."
