With strong installation and under construction numbers, as well as new technological advances, 2016 is already building off last year’s success.
Wind by the numbers
520 megawatts (MW) of new capacity came online during 2016’s first quarter, bringing the country ever-so close to 75 gigawatts (GW) of total installed capacity. In all, there’s now enough wind energy in the U.S. to power 20 million American homes.
And there’s more of the way. Over 10 GW of new wind power is currently under construction, and another 5.1 GW are in the advanced stages of development.
40 states plus Puerto Rico, and for the first time Guam, now have utility-scale wind projects.During the year’s first three months, new wind projects came online in New Mexico, Iowa, Utah, Ohio and Oklahoma.....

Vestas has been selected as preferred turbine supplier and EPC contractor for a 600MW wind project in southern Laos.
The decision came from Thailand-based developer Impact Electrons Siam (IES) which aims to see the Monsoon Wind Power Project completed in 2020.
With an estimated cost of $1.5bn, the project will be the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region’s largest wind farm, and the first wind development in Laos.....
The project would be sited over an area of 68,000 hectares in Sekong and Attapeu provinces, with the developer expecting to supply power to other regional nations.
The project’s development dates back to 2012 when Impact Energy Asia (IEA) — a subsidiary of IES — signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Laos government, a deal firmed up last year.

(Bloomberg) -- Vestas Wind Systems A/S is revising its forecasts after a U.S. decision on tax credits for renewable energy companies bolstered its position in the world’s largest economy.
“Right now we, as well as our clients, are very active and looking into the new conditions,” Chief Executive Officer Anders Runevad said in an interview in western Denmark on Thursday. The decision to extend the current tax credit framework by five years is “incredibly positive,” while a subsequent clarification by the Internal Revenue Service means the outlook is “more favorable than what was probably projected,” he said.
The shares rose as much as 2.5 percent after trading 0.7 percent lower at the open in Copenhagen. The gain added 3.3 billion kroner ($500 million) to the market value of the world’s largest wind-turbine maker.
Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that about 41.3 percent of Vestas’s revenue last year came from the Americas. “Now, we’re eying a stable market in the U.S. for a considerable future,” Runevad said. “Until 2020 we’re looking at a very good and stable market which we haven’t had at all previously.”
Vestas will probably wait until after the second quarter to comment on the full effect of the U.S. tax credit decision, Runevad said.
“We’re first and foremost going to look at what we think of the market volume and then we don’t comment on orders until they’re firm,” he said. There is a chance Vestas will be ready to give its updated comment on the market in its second-quarter report, “and if not then in the third quarter,” he said.
Vestas can confirm that Vattenfall and MHI Vestas Offshore Wind have entered into a conditional agreement regarding delivery of the V164-8.0 MW turbine for the 400 MW Horns Rev 3 project in Denmark.
If and when the project translates into a firm and unconditional order, Vestas will disclose a company announcement about this.
