Bei den Arbeitsmarktdaten rechnen Volkswirte mit einer gleichbleibenden Arbeitslosenquote von 5.6%, aber mit 120.000 neu geschaffenen Stellen außerhalb der Landwirtschaft. Die durchschnittlichen Stundenlöhne, so die Erwartung, stiegen im Februar um 0.2% nach +0.1% im Januar.

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- The Bank of England left its key short-term repo rate unchanged at 4 percent, as expected. Economists have been expecting the bank to gradually lift its benchmark interest rate this year to brake record consumer borrowing. The BoE has twice raised rates by a quarter point since November last year. British consumers have been emboldened by the extraordinary surge in house prices. Most economists, and U.K. lenders and home builders, expect the rate of house price increases to slow this year. Yet the data remains strong. Lender Halifax said British house prices rose 1.6 percent in February from January, representing an annual growth rate of 17.8 percent. Economists, on average, expect the BoE may lift rates at the May meeting.

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- The European Central Bank left its key short-term interest rate at 2 percent. Economists had expected the ECB to leave its benchmark refinance rate unchanged, but the pressure has been building on the ECB to respond to euro's appreciation against the dollar and the yen. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder effectively called for an interest rate last week. The euro's recent 6 percent drop from Feb. 18 peak to the dollar this week likely released some of the pressure on the ECB. Still some economists fear the overall weak dollar trend could upend the economic recovery underway in the eurozone. The most recent confidence measures -- such as the German Ifo business indicator have edged down, pointing to concerns on the dollar and the health of the recovery. The ECB last lowered its benchmark on June 6, 2003.
