A European Union-backed scheme to boost production of semiconductors used for 5G systems reportedly began assessing the viability of building a factory capable of producing cutting-edge silicon with support from top global chipmakers.
Citing a spokesperson from France’s finance ministry, Bloomberg reported the facility could be supported by either Samsung or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), though noted plans had not been finalised......

...TSMC’s Japan research center (being established with investment of JPY18.6bn) is to focus on the development of 3D SoIC materials. In detail, the venture aims to create synergies with a range of Japanese materials companies via the establishment of a Japanese research institute for advanced materials technology. Presenting 3D SoIC as one of the main growth engines to be in play from 2022, TSMC is constructing two back-end process fabs for 3D SoIC technology, one of which is to be completed in 2021.-......

"There is no quick remedy for tight supply conditions, though we do see bottlenecks beginning to ease by Q3," Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach said in a note to clients Tuesday.
Semiconductor stocks with high exposure to the automotive industry should benefit from improved pricing near-term, but the chip shortages will cap revenue upside. ...
The chip shortages are mainly due to capacity constraints at foundries such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM).
"Foundries have just begun to allocate more capacity to autos, which should translate to increased output by the middle of Q2," Hettenbach said...

Three Asian companies have reportedly announced plans to establish facilities in Arizona to supply Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.'s forthcoming plant in Phoenix.
Taiwanese media reported that Chang Chun Petrochemical Co. Ltd., United Integrated Services Co. "Taiwan Semiconductor is the world’s largest outsourced foundry of logic semiconductor chips. TSMC’s shares appreciated 34.5% during the quarter. Taiwan Semiconductor continues to see unprecedented demand, albeit at a slightly less rapid growth rate than earlier in 2020. At the time of writing, TSMC announced strong fourth-quarter results and staggering growth in their expected capital expenditures for 2021 – growing from $17B in 2020 to $25B to $28B in 2021. Forward-looking capital expenditures are the key leading indicator of their medium-term growth rate expectations, and I expect TSMC management will continue to earn excellent returns on these colossal investments.

TSMC accounted for 54 percent of the global foundry market against Samsung Electronics’ 17 percent in 2020. Among global foundry companies, the two alone can mass-produce 10 nm or smaller products. Due to this situation, it is not easy for TSMC alone to handle the demand for semiconductors from ICT companies.
Until now, many foundry orders have been awarded to TSMC, which sticks to its business motto of "not competing with customers." But as TSMC is unable to meet growing orders, its clients have no choice but to choose other options.
Unlike TSMC which specializes in foundry services only, Samsung Electronics is a general semiconductor company which produces a wide range of products and has competitors in diverse business areas. For this reason, it has had difficulty getting foundry orders from its competitors, who are worried about showing their designs to a formidable rival....

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is reportedly embarking on a massive recruitment program from its talent pool to staff its foundry in Phoenix, Arizona.
The world’s largest chipmaker is said to have held a number of internal information sessions in an attempt to attract at least 300 workers for the plant in the United States, wrote UDN.
The fab, which is set to break ground this year, is dedicated to the production of 12-inch wafers using 5-nanometer technology. The project is estimated to cost US$12 billion and will last between 2021 and 2029, with a monthly capacity of 20,000 wafers to be delivered starting 2024.
Earlier reports have disclosed the hiring push and the promise from the U.S. to grant as many working visas as needed. T.......
