NEOMEDIA / GAVITEC - Mobile Marketing
10.07.2009 | PRINOVIS MOBILE SOLUTIONS & NEOMEDIA EUROPE GEWINNEN NEUKUNDEN

There have been several recent announcements from Scanbuy, Inc, in regard to deployment of mobile barcode services in the United States with partners such as Sprint, Dupont, Augme and Graphic Packaging International. Given that our infringement suit against Scanbuy is ongoing, we felt it was important to communicate that we believe these intended actions are in violation of our patents, including our barcode look-up patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,199,048) which was validated by the USPTO earlier this year. NeoMedia has an active licensing program in the marketplace, however, Scanbuy has not obtained a license.
“Rules of engagement can be confusing in an emerging marketplace. We believe companies intend to be respectful of intellectual property rights, so we want to help guide parties interested in mobile barcoding towards the appropriate licensing channels to avoid delays, frustration and legal headaches down the road”, stated Iain McCready, CEO of NeoMedia Technologies.
In keeping with its vision and commitment to developing an open and interoperable ecosystem, NeoMedia is actively licensing its technology and patents to foster innovation and competition in the creation of exciting new mobile barcode applications and services for the telecom, retail, manufacturing and advertising industries. Designed to unify the marketplace and establish momentum to help the mobile barcode community scale, NeoMedia's licensing program is available to all participants who are interested in becoming part of an open and collaborative ecosystem..
Companies interested in licensing should contact Dean Wood, VP Business Development at dwood@neom.com

NeoMedia has announced new 2d barcode deals with several companies in the Philippines. NeoMedia has been working with Omniprime Marketing, a mobile solutions company in the Philipines for three years now. They are announcing several new mobile barcoding services they have created together. These include barcodes on cash cards, payments for train and boat tickets, and a loyalty scheme for petrol stations.
Batangas Port:
NeoMedia has announced a phased implementation of it’s technology in the Philippines’ Batangas Port. It currently uses 2d barcodes on paper tickets, but soon they’ll begin sending the barcode tickets directly to phones. Batangas is the first port to get this system, with roll-outs also planned in other ports.
Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation:
RCBC, a financial institution in the Philippines, will be using NeoMedia barcode tech for contactless payment. The bank will be printing unique barcodes on its customers ATM cards. Scanning the code at a point-of-purchase will automatically debit the card account. Batangas Port is one of the places where this service will be available. From 15 July, passengers will be able to scan the cards at turnstiles, and their E-Wallet bank accounts will be automatically debited.
Phoenix Petroleum:
Phoenix Petroleum has 100 petrol stations across the Philippines. It’s NeoMedia implementation will manage a pre-paid petrol and loyalty points system it is creating. Customers will be able to top up their mobile with petrol money, which can be redeemed at any Phoenix Petrolium station. Scanning your 2d barcode will not only automatically debit your pre-paid petrol account, but also award loyalty points.
From the release:
“Working alongside Omniprime, as we have done for the past three years, we continue to further strengthen our foothold in this rapidly developing mobile market. NeoMedia’s technology is perfectly suited to the geography of a country such as the Philippines, and we’re looking forward to applying our services in more new and innovative ways,“ commented Dr. Christian Steinborn, CEO of NeoMedia Europe AG.
What we think?
Three deals in one announcement is a good thing - NeoMedia is obviously doing well out of its relationship with Omniprime. I’m also interested in the ATM idea - I had never considered that. Cash cards are another thing that people have on them all them time. By linking a unique barcode to your cashcard, it opens up a whole realm of possibilities for mobile barcode payment
NeoMedia Europe AG set to capitalise on Philippines burgeoning mobile market

MANILA / LONDON, July 22, 2009 – Today NeoMedia Europe AG is pleased to announce three further deals in the Philippines through their relationship with the Philippines’ leading mobile solutions specialist Omniprime Marketing, Inc.
NeoMedia aims to increase its presence in the Philippines, a country that boasts the highest per capita usage for text messaging in the world, via an exclusive deal with the country’s port operator in the Batangas Port. The pilot program is being pioneered in the Philippines’ Batangas Port. It initially involves printing real time terminal tickets with 2d bar codes and scanning the tickets to quantify the number of passengers embarking vessels in the port. The initial paper ticketing will be added with contactless 2d bar coded ATM cards issued by RCBC, a leading commercial bank in the Philippines and phased out in favor of scanned mobile tickets being sent directly to people’s phones. The system will then be rolled out to other ports in the Philippines.
On 15 July, through a collaboration between RCBC, Omniprime, and MRT-3, passengers will be allowed to tap their ATM cards with 2d bar codes when passing through turnstiles that automatically debit their E-Wallet bank accounts.
Whereas before passengers would use their cell-phones to buy train tickets, this development allows 2d bar coded paper tickets to be printed at Omniprime station booths for cash payments, added to which all these transactions can be traced by MRT management.
NeoMedia’s technology will also be used by Phoenix Petroleum’s 100 gas stations throughout the Philippines, allowing customers to make pre-paid purchases through their mobile phones and then pay at any of the country’s petrol stations receiving loyalty points for their purchases using the 2d bar code system.
Given the disparate and logistically difficult nature of an archipelago country such as the Philippines, and the challenges in developing internet infrastructure NeoMedia’s technology will enable Omniprime customers to use a pre paid credit system via GPRS on their mobile handsets. This creates the potential to develop customized calls to actions and reach new levels of customer relationship management.
