Company officials estimate its new offices would create 50 to 100 jobs initially with plans to increase its work force to up to 2,000 employees over the next three years. The automotive industry has a rich multiplier effect, so such a development could result in numerous additional jobs being created in the County.
L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and LAEDC President and CEO Bill Allen were instrumental in attracting BYD to L.A. County. Antonovich and Allen met with BYD’s leadership multiple times in the U.S. and in China over the last two year to solicit their commitment to choose Los Angeles County as their gateway to the North American market.
LAEDC’s subsidiary corporation, the World Trade Center Association Center Association, Los Angeles-Long Beach, also led a delegation of local experts to visit BYD’s China headquarters as part of their attraction efforts. WTCA President Vance Baugham has managed the attraction project for the past 18 months.

BYD Establishes US Headquarters in the City of Los Angeles p. 2/2
In addition to being North America’s largest consumer market for electric vehicles, Southern
California was seen as a strategic outpost for BYD because of its proximity to major infrastructure including Los Angeles International Airport, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and several railways, and is home to major operations of other car companies such as Honda, Toyota,
Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. In 2009, BYD sold over 430,000 automobiles to become one of the largest domestic auto manufacturers in China. This sales performance was more than double their 2008 sales.
“As one of China’s leading manufacturers of hybrid and electric vehicles, BYD’s investment in L.A. County represents a huge win for our region,” said Allen. “Not only does it validate the fact that many international companies want to establish their North American toehold in the clean technology space right here in L.A. County, but BYD’s presence could be a catalyst for the creation of thousands of jobs at time when we so desperately need them.”
“We congratulate the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa and First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner for their diligence, creativity and success in winning BYD’s headquarters location in a competition that involved more than a hundred sites we showed BYD in many different cities across L.A. County,” said Allen.
BYD started in 1995 in Shenzhen as a rechargeable battery maker, and has developed rapidly as a result of its technology to become one of the world’s largest rechargeable battery manufacturers. In 2003, BYD’s Chairman Wang Chuanfu made the bold decision to step into the automobile industry. After entering the auto market for only seven years, BYD is already seen by many analysts as an emerging world leader in electric car technology. The company also gained significant attention when investor Warren Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., bought a 9.8 percent stake in 2008.
Forget gasoline. For that matter, forget cars. Chinese automaker BYD may skip both in bringing the first Chinese vehicles to the U.S.A. They may come as electric-powered minivans or crossovers.
That's what's seeping out of the Beijing auto show from the Associated Press. The five-seater from BYD, the automaker that counts Warren Buffett as an investor and supposedly stands for "Build Your Dreams," could be on sale later this year. Others say BYD is planning to go ahead with just bringing an electric car to the U.S., not necessarily the crossover.
Either way, the basic idea is sound:
If China could leapfrog gas engines and come straight to the U.S. with electrics, it would avoid the cutthroat competition for conventional gas-powered cars that has cut down so many promising automakers in the past. Consumers might overlook a few superficial quality flaws if they could get a good, high-tech electric.
Meanwhile, electric cars are all the rage in China right now. Daimler is going ahead with plans to build electric vehicles with BYD. And Nissan megaboss Carlos Ghosn is even talking about building its electric Leaf cars in China, the Detroit News reports."

Mega-Markt Elektroautos:

Aktuelle Marktlage: sehr volatil.
The top selling brands were as follows:
1. Wuling-GM – 106,200
2. Shanghai GM – 87,700
3. Shanghai VW – 72,900
4. FAW-VW – 72,300
5. Beijing Hyundai – 57,000
6. Dongfeng-Nissan – 56,700
7. Chery – 50,100
8. BYD – 45,100
9. Chang’an – 44,400
10. FAW-Toyota – 44,100
In April both Chery, GM and FAW-VW had a slight increase in sales, where as Chang’an actually went down. The top ten car makers were responsible for over 630,000 cars in April alone, or over 57% of the market.
Whilst the top selling models were:
1. BYD F3 – 21,100 units sold
2. Hyundai Elantra – 21,100
3. FAW-VW Jetta – 20,300
4. Shanghai-VW Lavida – 19,500
5. Buick Excelle – 18,500
6. Tianjin Xiali – 15,600
7. Chevrolet Cruze – 15,500
8. BYD F0 – 15,200
9. Ford Focus – 14,800
10. Toyota Camry – 14,300
Interestingly, it seems that BYD sales are quite low when compared to other manufacturers, but they appear to do exceptionally well with the F0 and F3 models. Will the introduction of MPV and SUV models spice up their sales a little? The Hyundai Elantra appears to have hit some sort of sweet spot in China with its sales being so high, as has the Ford Focus despite it being on the market for so long with barely visible facial changes it continues to sell well."

Who know´s?
BYD Co. plans to launch its all-electric car, the e6, in Shenzhen this year by supplying e6 taxis in the southern Chinese city, said an executive of the Chinese battery and car maker.
The executive, who declined to be named, said e6 taxis may be rolled out in Shenzhen by the end of the first half and sales will be expanded to other cities later.
BYD, which is partly owned by Warren Buffett's MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., has put a big focus on developing electric cars. Henry Li, general manager of BYD's auto exports trade division, said earlier this week that BYD's plans to start test-marketing the e6 in China this year is "on track." Speaking at an industry conference in Beijing Mr. Li said the company plans to initially focus on "fleet" business with the e6, selling the car to taxi operators and government agencies.
BYD had previously targeted the end of last year to launch the e6 in China.
BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu said last month that the company is on track to launch the e6 in the U.S. during the second half of 2010. A U.S. launch is seen as a test of the global ambitions of China's auto sector to use electric-vehicle technology to close the distance with more established car makers.
BYD has said it plans to sell the e6 model for slightly more than $40,000 -- competitive with some bigger rivals.
Mr. Li said Thursday that BYD expects to start its auto sales in China to nearly double this year on the strength of the domestic market. He reiterated BYD's target of selling 800,000 cars in China this year, which he said would be up from 480,000 units sold in 2009.
Established in 1995, BYD began as a manufacturer of rechargeable lithium-ion and nickel batteries but has branched out into producing cellphone parts and alternative-fuel cars."

May 17 (Bloomberg) -- GreenTech Automotive Inc., chaired by former head of the Democratic National Committee Terry McAuliffe, acquired EuAuto Technology Ltd. to build and market the Hong Kong company’s mycar model in the U.S.
The Virginia-based hybrid car maker plans to produce five models in total and will start making the all-electric mycar after it receives U.S. government approval, McAuliffe said at a media briefing in Hong Kong today. He didn’t say how much GreenTech bought EuAuto for.
EuAuto’s mycar competes with Toyota Motor Corp.’s gasoline- electric Prius hybrid and Honda Motor Co.’s gas-electric Insight to meet rising global demand for low or zero-emission cars. EuAuto started marketing mycar in Hong Kong and Europe last year.
GreenTech aims to sell “hundreds of thousands” of mycars in the U.S. within a few years of production, McAuliffe said. “Potential demand for this kind of car is huge,” he said.
The two-seater coupe can be charged from any regular household socket and the standard version retails at 10,495 pounds ($15,000) in the U.K. By contrast, Nissan Motor Co.’s Leaf electric car will sell for $32,780 in the U.S. before government incentives.
BYD Co., the Chinese auto and battery maker backed by Warren Buffett, is also preparing to sell rechargeable battery- powered cars in the U.S. GreenTech may start production next year, McAuliffe said.
‘Green Collar Jobs’
GreenTech aims to create 4,500 jobs in the U.S., with the acquisition of EuAuto accounting for an additional 300 positions, the automaker said in a statement handed out to reporters in Hong Kong. The announcement coincided with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke’s visit to China to promote clean-energy exports and investment.
“We will continue to expand green collar job creation, which is central to our mission to build energy efficient, affordable automobiles in the U.S.,” McAuliffe said in the statement.
The company has spent almost $500 million developing prototype cars and plans to invest in wind and solar energy in the future, he said.
McAuliffe chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2005. He ran unsuccessfully for the governor of the state of Virginia last year.

Shanghai, May 19 (Gasgoo.com) China's electric car maker BYD Auto is set to starting selling its electric car e6 in the United States later this year, and the BYD e6 is likely to be priced at about $40,000, People's Daily reported today.
On May 17, BYD Auto delivered 40 all-electric e6 cars to the Shenzhen-based Pengcheng Electric Taxi Company in southern Chinese province of Guangdong, making Shenzhen the first Chinese city to have electric taxis in service. BYD plans to put 100 e6 taxis on Shenzhen's roads by the end of June.
Meanwhile, preparations for the BYD e6's entry into the U.S. market are well under way, said Xia Zhibing, general manager of BYD Auto. The newly established BYD North American sales headquarters in Los Angeles will sell the alternative-energy cars. The BYD e6 has passed all necessary tests in the U.S.
As an SUV-MPV crossover model developed by BYD, the e6 car measures 4,560mm x 1,822mm x 1,630mm, with a 2,830mm wheelbase, and has only five seats in the spacious car body to ensure passengers' comfort. It can run up to 300km on one charge. It has a start-up time of less than 10 seconds and its speed can peak at 140km/h.
The BYD e6 uses the eco-friendly rechargeable super-iron battery and starter battery. The super-iron battery can be charged in slow-mode with a 220V power adapter and a 3C adapter in fast charge, filled to 80% within 15 minutes.
The e6 electric car's entry into the U.S. market this year will mark a historic moment for Warren Buffet-backed BYD. The selling price of $40,000 may drop after the car's production and sales increase."
