The proven reserves of the Caspian Sea shelf exceed 2.9 billion tons of oil and 3 trillion cubic metres of gas, says the Deputy Russian Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov.

He was speaking during a meeting of the Russian Government Marine Board in Astrakhan. According to him, the resources may well cause an economic boom in the region in the future.

Ivanov also said that 10 deposits, discovered on the Caspian Seabed in the Russian sector, can ensure the production of 40 million tons of oil every year.
