How retailers will beat Amazon and Ebay with geofencing
Krillion by Local now powers local-shopping experiences for apps, brands and retailers. Krillion provides apps with real-time access to data on products, pricing and in-store availability at popular retailers, including Best Buy, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart.
Local also demoed some cool products at Seimer Summit this week in Santa Monica. "Geofencing" technology allows brands and retailers to message consumers with offers that incorporate real-time product data when they come within a certain distance of a store. "Ambient data" feeds allow retailers to place store hours and location information next to product-related YouTube videos.
"Krillion's dynamic data feeds enable advertising and app data to be delivered in highly personalized ways," says Local CEO Thiel. "Marketers can reach targeted consumers based on where they happen to be, where they are going and what products they have been researching."
Investing in APIs is strategically important for Local. The Krillion API allows them to work with large corporations willing to subscribe to expensive data feeds. Local previously focused more on selling advertising packages to small and medium-sized business. Also, more than half of Local's revenue comes from partnerships with Yahoo and Google, so Local is now able to diversify its revenue and reduce dependence on those two tech giants.
Krillion by Local's developer site gives a broad overview of what is possible with Local's APIs.

Yahoo is adding to its mobile lineup with the acquisition of analytics company Flurry.
Yahoo is paying more than $300 million for the San Francisco-based startup, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because the talks were private. Flurry analyzes data from smartphone users to help developers better understand their audiences, and connects brands and agencies to consumers on devices through targeted advertising, giving Yahoo more pathways for mobile promotions.
Flurry has a net revenue run-rate of about $100 million. It has 150 employees and has taken $50.5 million in funding from investors. And although that doesn't make Flurry the biggest player in mobile adtech — InMobi and Velti still have more employees, and Millennial has greater revenues — it is one of the biggest players in big data analytics and mobile app ad reach.
There is one more thing Khalaf is unusually direct about. Flurry is not yet profitable, he says. Usually when adtech CEOs are asked whether their businesses make money, they launch into an explanation of how they're investing for growth or scale (or they say something impenetrably complicated about EBITDA). When asked whether the company is profitable, Khalaf says, "No. In 2014 we're profitable maybe."
The reason: Flurry is spending $28 million a year on analytics. "The cost of analytics is huge," Khalaf says. Flurry has created the largest HBase cluster in the business, he says, referring to the gigantic — and gigantically expensive — database serving devices that can handle millions of lines of tabled information.

SAN FRANCISCO — Successful mobile ad campaigns have a new mantra: location, location, location.
“Someone’s location says a lot about who they are,” said Maureen Little, a senior vice president at marketing software play Turn, at VentureBeat’s MobileBeat 2014.
Little and other senior mobile ad execs agree that with geolocation tracking and souped-up data analysis tools at their disposal, marketers looking to expand their reach with targeted campaigns are relying more on the technology to customize, and monetize, their efforts. Wikipedia explains Naked Shortselling: "Naked short selling, or naked shorting, is the practice of short-selling a tradable asset of any kind without first borrowing the security or ensuring that the security can be borrowed, as is conventionally done in a short sale. When the seller does not obtain the shares within the required time frame, the result is known as a "failure to deliver". The transaction generally remains open until the shares are acquired by the seller, or the seller's broker settles the trade. In 2008, the SEC banned what it called "abusive naked short selling"in the United States, as well as some other jurisdictions, as a method of driving down share prices. Failing to deliver shares is legal under certain circumstances, and naked short selling is not per se illegal. In the United States, naked short selling is covered by various SEC regulations which prohibit the practice."
Nobody knows anything about the number of naked shortselling - without, if he would exist and I believe so, BIG SHORT (must not be one person or hedge fund, it could be more, who are working together), because nobody reporting about not legal abusive naked shortselling. And controls don't exist, because SEC and Finra don't want to control their own rules.
SEC banned what it called "abusive naked short selling"in the United States, but had near never did any control. That is one reason, because after my esatimates not legal abusive naked shortselling by Local Corp is about the 3-fold of the numbers of the published legal shortselling-numbers.
Result: Complete shortselling - legal with share-lending and criminal abusive naked shortselling - is after my estimates between 5 and 10 million shares by Local Corp.
