Manufacturing push
Berkshire (BRK.B) has expanded its manufacturing portfolio with the addition of Duracell, Precision CastParts, and a stake in Apple (AAPL). The Trump administration is pushing for domestic manufacturing in a bid to boost overall economic growth.
The administration is also targeting lower taxes and favorable policies to attract more manufacturers. Berkshire has traditionally held onto its manufacturing portfolio amid a spurt in demand for owning services businesses. With China focusing more on services and consumption, Trump is pushing for the US to push its contribution in global manufacturing.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) will likely be one of the biggest winners of the tax reform bill recently passed into law. The company stands to benefit from a lower corporate tax rate on its earnings from operating businesses and capital gains. The most immediate impact of tax reform will show up on Berkshire's balance sheet when it reports fourth-quarter earnings, as its book value could soar 13% in a single calendar quarter.
A dramatic drop in deferred tax liabilities
Buffett often says his favorite holding period is "forever," precisely because holding onto winners allows Berkshire to delay making cash payments for taxes. Berkshire Hathaway ended the last quarter with deferred tax liabilities of roughly $86.6 billion, the vast majority of which is attributable to gains on investments that it hasn't sold.
Berkshire's deferred tax liabilities were calculated assuming that it would eventually pay a corporate tax rate of roughly 35% on its gains when the profits on its biggest winners are realized. Because the corporate tax rate was reduced to 21% from 35% during the quarter, its deferred tax liabilities will have to be adjusted down to reflect the change in the corporate tax rate in its next earnings report.

Berkshire's outlook for 2018 is bright, Barron's adds, with a combination of solid economic fundamentals and a reduced federal income tax rate leading them to estimate that 2018 EPS easily will surpass $12,000 per class A share. Given Thursday's close of $299,210 per share, that implies a forward P/E ratio of 24.9. Additionally, Barron's projects that Berkshire's book value per share will end the fourth quarter at about $211,000, giving it a price to book ratio of 1.4.
Berkshire's diverse array of operating divisions include, among others, the Burlington Northern railroad, Lubrizol chemicals, and aircraft parts manufacturer Precision Castparts. Barron's indicates that manufacturing and industrial businesses such as these are likely to benefit from robust economic conditions in 2018.
