business that focuses on sustainable farming and natural foods is set to become the newest publicly traded company in Sioux Falls.
Verity Farms, which began in the 1970s and has experienced recent major growth, was acquired recently by Seattle-based AquaLiv Technologies Inc., a life sciences research and development company.
The new entity will be called Verity Farms Inc. and will be headquartered in Sioux Falls. AquaLiv will change its name to Aistiva Corp. and will operate as a subsidiary.
Verity Farms is in far northwest Sioux Falls, near Interstate 29 and the Renner exit. It was started by a farmer who nearly died after an accidental chemical spill while planting.
That farmer was Vincent Spader, brother of Duane Spader, the retired CEO of Spader’s RV Center who also built the business consulting firm Spader Business Management. After Vincent died in 1999, other farmers helped keep the business going, and Duane started to become more involved in the operation.
“I could never understand why Vincent was so motivated to do what he did in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s,” Duane Spader said. “At his funeral, I heard talk about the chemical spill, and then I understood his motivation and why he did the things he did. He basically started thinking, ‘If those chemicals can kill me, what are they doing to the life in the soil?’ We’re here today because of that, the dedication that he and those farmers had over the years.”
After transitioning his other business ventures to the next generation of family leadership, Spader joined Verity full time in mid-2011. He has since grown the business from three employees to 27 with facilities in three states and farmers participating in seven states.
“Everything we do starts with the soil,” Spader said. “The biology in the soil is what provides the nutrients that eventually come from the plants and into the animals. The big picture, our mission, is for Verity to become one of the healthiest food-producing organizations around.”
Branching out
Under Spader’s leadership, Verity has developed several lines of business. The Verity Farms line provides farmers with supplies to reinforce the biological aspect of their soil. Other business lines include Verity Meats, which offers all-natural meat products, and Verity Grain, which provides grain grown on Verity farms. There are plans to launch Verity Produce, to sell fruits and vegetables built off the Verity crop production program.
