Hong Kong shares end morning firmer as tycoon's plans trigger bargain-hunting
Hong Kong shares finished the Friday morning session higher as ""Asia's Warren Buffett"" Lee Shau-kee's investment plans encouraged investors to pick up bargains after the market's recent slide.
Lee said he is ready to invest 10 billion Hong Kong dollars in the local market. He was reported to have spent as much as 2 billion dollars on stocks yesterday.
The Hang Seng index was up 310.41 points or 1.2 percent at 26,315.33, off a low of 26,305.45 and high of 26,723.34.
Turnover was 61.2 billion Hong Kong dollars.
The gains were capped by losses on the Shanghai bourse. The key Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, lost 44.51 points at 4, 939.66.
CNOOC, China's largest offshore oil producer, was among major gainers in Hong Kong due to bargain-hunting.
CNOOC Ltd (NYSE:CEO) , mainland China's largest offshore oil and gas producer, said the first platform of the second phase of its Penglai (PL) 19-3 oil field, located in northeastern Bohai Bay, has started production.
The company said in a statement that the facilities include five wellhead platforms with a designed processing capacity of 190,000 barrels of oil per day.
PL19-3, the largest oil field in offshore China, is being jointly developed by CNOOC and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) China Inc (COPC).
CNOOC owns a 51 pct stake in the oil field while COPC holds the remaining 49 pct.
The first phase of PL 19-3 started production in December 2002.

CNOOC Ltd (NYSE:CEO) , China's biggest offshore oil producer, is eyeing the Caspian Sea, Africa and Asia Pacific for future acquisitions, The Standard reported Wednesday, citing a company official.
'Acquisitions have to be a value creation for the company,' the newspaper quoted CNOOC chief financial officer Yang Hua as saying
CNOOC on Tuesday said that its Penglai 19-3 oil field located in the northeastern part of Bohai Bay has started production.
China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), the nation's largest offshore oil producer, announced yesterday it had commenced operating the nation's first offshore wind power plant.
The plant can generate 4.4 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity a year. It will save carbon dioxide emissions by 3,500 tons and sulfur dioxide by 11 tons per year, according to CNOOC.
"CNOOC has great advantages in the development of offshore wind power, an important area in renewable energy," said Fu Chengyu, president of the company, adding that CNOOC will pay much attention to clean and renewable energy in the future.
Construction of the plant only took seven months, and its operation could signal even larger scale offshore wind power projects in the near future, Zhou Shouwei, vice-president of the company said.
China has the potential of 750,000-MW wind energy offshore, Shi Pengfei, vice-chairman of the Chinese Wind Energy Association, told China Daily.
The country also has the potential of 250,000-MW wind energy on land, mainly in the northwest and the east coast, he said.
"This year the nation's wind power sector will continue to see quick growth. In 2007, the installed capacity is expected to be increased by another 1,000 MW," he said.
Wind power presently still accounts for a small part of the nation's total power supply. By the end of 2006 the total installed capacity of wind power in the country was about 2,600 MW. In 2006 China developed a total of 1,300 MW of installed wind power capacity.
Determined to promote sustainable development, the government has set a goal of 30,000 MW of wind power capacity by 2020.
This April, China Energy Conservation Investment Corp, a large State-owned enterprise, began construction on China's first million-kilowatt wind power project in Zhangbei, in the highlands between Beijing and Inner Mongolia.
Once completed, the project will generate 440 million kwh of electricity a year. A total of 1.6 billion yuan has been earmarked for the project.
Analysts said wind power has drawn more attention because of soaring crude oil prices.
According to statistics from HSBC, wind energy is the most cost-effective energy resource when oil is above US$49 a barrel.

Hong Kong-listed CNOOC cut to ""neutral"" as stock fully valued - Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse has downgraded CNOOC Ltd, China's largest offshore oil producer, to ""neutral"" from ""buy"" as the stock is fully valued and an oil price correction next year will weight on the share price.
Credit Suisse has also reduced its target price to 15 Hong Kong dollars a share from 17 dollars.
""CNOOC has been a strong performer through the second half of 2007, consistently outperforming its peers and the China market. With this performance, the stock looks fully valued,"" said analysts at Credit Suisse.
CNOOC has gained more than 58 percent since end-June, surpassing the 30 percent increase in rival company PetroChina. The stock is currently trading at a valuation of 17 times its estimated price earnings ratio in 2008.
CNOOC is also expected to be hit by an oil price correction in 2008 following record prices in the last quarter of 2007.
""We believe that oil prices have peaked, with supply growth likely to pick up, and demand growth slowing on the margin,"" said the analysts in a research note.
""While we still forecast a 70 US dollars a barrel oil price for 2008 and a correction would leave our earnings intact, valuations have overshot, we believe, leaving the stock vulnerable to an oil price correction,"" they said.
Global oil prices have slipped from near 100 US dollars a barrel level in November to below 90 dollars a barrel amid signs of weakening demand and expectations OPEC will boost production.
In early morning Asian trade, New York's main contract, light sweet crude for January delivery, gained 34 cents to 89.65 dollars a barrel from 89.31 dollars in late US trades Monday.
Brent North Sea crude for January delivery added 28 cents to 90.08 dollars a barrel.
A continued appreciation in the value of the Chinese currency, the yuan, against the US dollar is also expected to impact CNOOC's yuan earnings negatively. Credit Suisse has predicted that the Chinese yuan will average 7. 18 to a dollar in 2008.
CNOOC closed the morning session up 24 cents or 1.7 percent at 14.28 dollars.
UBS remains bullish on Asian upstream oil & gas producers, cautious on refiners. House's 4 top picks from Asia for 2008: CNOOC (0883.HK), SK Energy (096770.SE), PTT E&P (PTTEP.TH), Reliance Industries (500325.BY); all with Buy call. "With our view of continued higher crude oil prices driven by supply constraints in the next few years, we continue to favor stocks with upstream exposure, particularly CNOOC." Possible A-share listing of CNOOC may give upside surprise; targets HK$18.30. Stock off 0.1% at HK$14.46. Notes Sinopec (0386.HK) may benefit from more fuel price hike in China
China National Offshore Oil Corp, the parent of CNOOC Ltd, said it agreed to pay 530 mln yuan to raise its stake in Hubei Dayukou Chemical Co, a chemical fertilizer maker, to 83 pct from almost 30 pct .
CNOOC , the country's top offshore oil and gas producer, wil buy the entire 53.19 pct stake in Hubei Dayukou now held by state-owned debt-clearance firm China Cinda Asset Management Co.
CNOOC and Cinda signed a transfer agreement on Dec 8.
The company said Hubei Dayukou will report a net profit this year but it did not elaborate.
CNOOC plans to build new facilities for Hubei Dayukou that will allow it to produce 800,000 tons per year of sulphuric acid, 300,000 tons of phosphoric acid and 600,000 tons of ammonium phosphate, according to state media.
CNOOC is also the parent of China BlueChemical Ltd ( HK 3983 ), a chemical fertilizer maker.

China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) is still in talks with Iran on joint development of the North Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, a source close to the situation said.
In February, Iranian media reported that CNOOC and Iran's Pars Oil and Gas Co were about to sign a final contract, worth about 16 bln usd, to develop the gas field.
However, the contract signing has been delayed due to ""international sensitivity,"" the source said without elaborating.
""The two sides are still in talks on the issue,"" the source said.
CNOOC and the Iranian partner signed a memorandum of understanding on North Pars early last year. Under the initial agreement, CNOOC was to purchase North Pars output for 25 years in the form of liquefied natural gas.

Solarbranche in China - Nicht nur ein Gerücht
Freitag 13. Juni 2008, 15:32 Uhr
|
Liebe Leser,
