Along with its Q1 results, Qiwi (QIWI +13.7%) announces it's buying Russia's Contact money transfer service and Rapida payment-processing service from local financial group Otkritie in exchange for 5.59M shares (current value of $190M).
Qiwi: "With this acquisition, not only are we becoming a significant player in the money remittance market, but we are also becoming a strategic partner of one of the largest Russian financial institutions, Otkritie." The deal is expected to "contribute between approximately 15% and 20% in annualized terms to both QIWI's adjusted net revenue and adjusted net profit in 2015 following closing," which is expected by mid-September.
JPMorgan (target hiked to $50) expects the deal to increase Qiwi's remittance market share by over 4x. The firm is hiking its 2015-2017 EPS estimates by 11%-26% on account of the acquisition and a rebounding ruble.

The New York Times broke news linking QIWI as one of the main methods of choice used to crowdfund the war in Ukraine involving Russia.
QIWI clearly notes its inability to comply with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) rules - the very same rules that prevent funding of terrorism. This places QIWI's business in jeopardy.

Is the company also dealing with U.S. sanctioned entities? Operations could be meaningfully impacted or shutdown if so. Are QIWI’s compliance standards comparable to a key competitor? Nope.
QIWI has a limited history of compliance with regulatory requirements; the company has skirted too close to the line on many fronts and it seems the music is about to stop.

...he NYT authors spilled the beans on QIWI's enabling war funding through its payment transfer system in the Russian-Ukraine conflict. QIWI is an instant payment operator for consumers in Russia that now finds itself between a rock and a hard place. The writing is on the wall as QIWI will now face negative attention for involvement in funding terrorism, not dissimilar to the attention received by the Clinton Foundation for funding from a Russian uranium deal. The rest of this report sets out the details that illustrate why....

Russian stocks gained in U.S. trading as oil prices advanced and the ruble rose to a two-week high against the dollar amid a rally in emerging-market assets.

OAO Mechel, the mining company seeking to avert bankruptcy, advanced as one of the company’s lenders said it is paying overdue debt. Electronic-payment processor Qiwi Plc and wireless carrier OAO VimpelCom each rose more than 4 percent. The Bloomberg Russia-US Equity Index jumped 1.2 percent. The ruble increased 0.2 percent.

Stocks gained and the ruble strengthened as Brent crude rose 0.6 percent to $64.26 on Thursday, a third straight gain. It traded at $64.17 at 10:43 a.m. Hong Kong time. Oil, which along with natural gas accounts for about half of Russia’s budget revenue, has rebounded 38 percent from this year’s low in January. Brent has sold for an average $62.39 a barrel in the past three months. Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings, said the situation in Russia will improve next year even if prices remain at current levels.

“Russia’s stock market is much more attractive to me than any other stock market these days because it is so hated,” Rogers said in an interview at a St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. “But it has good assets, convertible currency, and the central bank has done a very good job.”

Stocks on the Micex index sell in Moscow for an average 6.7 times estimated earnings. The benchmark gauge’s valuation has been the lowest in emerging markets amid a standoff with the U.S. and its allies over the Ukraine crisis as sanctions linked to the conflict push the economy toward its first recession since 2009.
International Sanctions

Russian retail sales plunged 9.2 percent in May from a year earlier, after a revised 9.6 percent slide in April, government data showed Thursday. A slump in fixed-capital investment worsened and stretched into a 17th month as real wages and disposable incomes continued to fall.

The Bloomberg gauge of U.S.-traded Russian stocks fell 52 percent last year as tumbling oil prices worsened the impact of international sanctions. European Union governments struck a preliminary accord to extend the measures to the end of January, two officials said Wednesday.
Mechel, Qiwi

For Rogers, who co-founded the Quantum Fund with George Soros in the 1970s, the price of oil, not sanctions, is the most important factor in the outlook for Russian equities. Valuations already reflect crude at current price levels, he said.

Mechel advanced 4.1 percent to $1.28. The company is paying overdue debt as agreed, Yuri Soloviev, first deputy chairman of VTB Group’s management board, said in St. Petersburg. Qiwi rose 4.3 percent to $29.16. The company is seen as able to continue generating growth in dollar terms, Sberbank CIB analysts said in an e-mailed note. VimpelCom advanced 6.7 percent to $5.54.

The Market Vectors Russia ETF rose 0.3 percent to $18.88. Futures on the dollar-denominated RTS Index expiring in September slipped 0.2 percent 94,870 in U.S. hours.

Moscow-based United Co. Rusal rose 1.2 percent to HK$4.32 at 10:40 a.m. in Hong Kong, heading for the highest close since May 27.

“There is relative stability in Ukraine and the scenario that sanctions will be extended has been priced in for a long time now, so the factors that were driving the market last year are not that important now,” Andrey Shenk, an analyst at Alfa Capital, said by phone Thursday. “Russia is not a market driven by headlines anymore. The dynamics of the market are in line with its developing-nations peers.”

http://seekingalpha.com/article/...ering-the-most-important-questions

..Qiwi consists of two major businesses: its Kiosks/Terminals (177 thousand) and its Visa (NYSE:V) QIWI Wallet (17.3 million). Together, these reach 85.5 million people spread over 8 countries. Of these 85.5 million, 70 million use its services at least once per month.

...only 24% of Russian households have bank accounts, as the banking sector in Russia has a nasty history (1998 crisis and current crisis) that has loaned its locals more distrust than anything else.

As shopping became a part of daily life, Russians needed a quick and easy way to pay bills online. Many Russian banks weren't ready to meet that demand, and thus, QIWI provided the solution.

Competition in Qiwi's industry was definitely rising, but its 177,000 ATMs still have more than double the reach of any other Russian bank's ATMs. So, while the banks have been lagging behind, QIWI has won the trust of the general public (hence, the 70 million active monthly users) by being easy to register for, easy to use, cash-friendly and free of charge.

The 17.3 million users of QIWI Wallet have the opportunity to make anonymous, secure online transfers to other Visa QIWI Wallet users or make payments for their utilities, mobile phone, internet bills, bank loans, airline and railway tickets through an app on their smartphones, via kiosks or via their PCs.

QIWI doesn't charge fees when customers top up their card, but it does charge fees concerning the VISA Plastic Prepaid card that allows users to make payments for goods and services from their Visa QIWI Wallet account at any physical store or website accepting Visa cards.

What we find so brilliant is that users of the QIWI Visa card have to pay 13 rubles, or 0.23 USD, whenever they want to check their balance at QIWI's ATMs.

Assuming that the every cardholder checks his/her balance at least once per year, QIWI earns (17.3 million x 0.23 USD) 3.9 million USD by doing nothing. Furthermore, when these cardholders redraw cash from an ATM with their cards, they pay 2% of the amount, plus a standard fee of 0.87 USD to QIWI. So again, assuming that all of their customers withdraw cash once a year, QIWI makes at least another easy 15 million USD.

We are telling you this because we want to make clear how strong and easy QIWI's business model is and how much cash it can generate without needing large investments.

And while you might think that this is some shady Russian company, you'll be surprised at the number of Western websites and brands that have integrated QIWI as a valid payment method. To name a few: Skype [owned by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)], Bwin (a major gambling website), Poker Stars (the number one poker website), AliExpress [one of the largest e-commerce websites, owned by Alibaba (NYSE:BABA)] and last but not least, eBAY (NASDAQ:EBAY) (one of the world's largest online marketplaces). That's right, even QIWI's perhaps biggest competitor [eBAY owns PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL)] has now decided to integrate QIWI as a valid payment option on eBay in Russia.

...QIWI is preparing its international expansion, and is doing this by gathering the best and most qualified people within the industry. It's a positive that QIWI is able to attract employees from its biggest competitor, as this adds to the company's credibility.

...Because of the sanctions , banks have been closing offices in order to save money during the first half of 2015.

QIWI, on the other hand, has been expanding its network of kiosks and terminals by 6% to 177,448 versus 167,403 last year. !!!
.....
Conclusion

Following research, it is hard for us not to concluded that QIWI is a top-notch company with massive potential for future growth and higher earnings.....
we continue to be a little worried and uncertain about the future of the company nonetheless.

On the other hand, we shouldn't underestimate QIWI's capabilities of growing its business,..It's a tough call, but we think that allocating a small part of your portfolio to QIWI at current prices ($27.8) isn't such a bad idea. However, keep enough cash at hand to buy possible dips towards $20, considering the high volatility and risk level.

In company news, Qiwi advanced Tuesday after the electronic payments company reported Q3 per-share earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations.

Excluding one-time items, net profit for the three months ended Sept. 30 fell to RUB18.77, or about $0.28 per share, down from a RUB21.05 gain during the year-ago period and beating the RUB17.19 per share analysts, on average, were expecting. Total adjusted net revenue rose 6% year over year to RUB2.53 billion, or about $72.7 million, trailing the RUB2.67 billion consensus.

Reported net income attributable to equity holders of the parent rose to RUB1.98 billion or RUB32.74 per diluted share from RUB1.57 billion or RUB28.39. Reported revenue rose to RUB4.69 billion from RUB3.82 billion.

For FY15, QIWI repeated its prior forecast, expecting both adjusted net revenue and adjusted net profit to increase between 18% and 22% from FY14 levels. That works out to a range of RUB76.1 to RUB78.72 per share profit, topping the Capital IQ consensus looking for FY15 net income of RUB71.5 per share. The company's revenue projection was in-line with the Street view looking for a 20.4% increase over year-ago levels to RUB10.6 billion.

QIWI shares were up nearly 10% at $17.51 each, earlier topping out at $17.95 a share.

Summary

Despite QIWI's exposure to the Russian market, I believe that the company is undervalued at these levels and there’s a lot of room for growth.

Its latest partnership agreements and strategic alliances will help QIWI to become a leading provider of financial payment services in the post-Soviet region.

Its valuation is relatively low in comparison with other competitors in the space and the outlook looks pretty attractive. I see a lot of upside here........
