In many mining sub-sectors, this chart tends to have almost no producers and a plethora of wannabes over to the left. However in the potash space there is a healthy pack of 800lb gorillas bunched on the right, with the potential should they so choose to discipline all the other players. However with their solidarity now broken some of the more daring wannabes are likely to be transformed into real live producers, upsetting the “natural order of things” in the Cartel’s outdated view. If we had looked at this chart two or three years ago most of those now in funding/permitting mode would have been in discovery mode. So this is one of the few mining sub-sectors where significant progress has been made towards production DESPITE the tough financing conditions.

Potash Corp. Boosts Outlook as Profit Tops Expectations
July 24, 2014 (Source: Reuters) – Potash Corp of Saskatchewan raised its full-year earnings outlook on Thursday after second-quarter profit fell less than expected due to improving global fertilizer demand...
“The key question is, ‘Is this just pent-up (potash) demand finally being satisfied, or is it going to continue into 2015,’” said Peter Prattas, analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald. “Our view is that demand has room to increase slightly in 2015, but we’re not going to continue with the momentum we’ve had to start the year.”
The company said it has a strong potash order book from U.S. buyers for the second half, and Canpotex Ltd – its offshore trading partnership with Mosaic Co and Agrium Inc – is fully committed through the third quarter.
China is driving some of the renewed potash demand. Potash Corp said it expected Canpotex to ship 1.2 million tonnes for the year factoring in optional tonnage arrangements in its contract with Sinofert Holdings Ltd.
Potash shipments to India also look to exceed last year’s level despite weaker monsoon rains that have limited Indian crop potential...

Agrimoney.com | New PotashCorp CEO hands out fistful of upgrades
'Strong customer engagement'
Indeed, the group stressed that in its core potash market there was "strong customer engagement in all key markets", a reference to fresh demand from India and, in particular, China, the top importer of the nutrient.
PotashCorp raised by 500,000 tonnes to 12.0m tonnes its forecast for China's overall potash imports this year, forecasting that buyers will exercise options with suppliers for extra volumes.
With forecasts for North American volumes raise too, to 10m tonnes from 9.0m-9.5m tonnes, the group raised its estimate for world industry potash shipments to 56.5m-58.0m tonnes, from 55m-57m tonnes...

However, the lower prices have lately rekindled demand.
“We have long said we expected to see volumes increase before prices, and that scenario is playing out as anticipated,” Larry Stranghoener, Mosaic’s interim CEO, said on Thursday.
“We expect demand to remain high throughout the year, and with low global pipeline inventory, prices should remain firm,” said Stranghoener, who will retire at the end of 2014.

Highlights:
Potash prices have risen as well, with customers trying to lock in tonnes for the fall season. I say trying to lock-in tonnes, because supply is limited. Rick McLellan and I recently traveled to visit customers in the corn belt, and we saw empty potash bin after empty potash bin, simply put, the cupboard was bare.
First, let’s discuss the demand picture. Demand for phosphate and potash was strong in all key agricultural areas of the world, so strong in fact, that producers are struggling to keep up. For potash for example, we are fully committed through the third quarter.
In both phosphates and potash, we are maintaining our global shipment forecast, which are 65 million to 66 million tonnes, and 57 million to 58 million tonnes respectively. These forecasts for global shipments have not changed all year, and they were consistently above the rest of the markets, and now others have revised their numbers upward.
First, our potash expansions remain on schedule and on budget. The new shaft at the Esterhazy K3 mine has reached a depth of more than 1,700 feet, and has moved through the Blairmore Water Formation, while the north shaft has reached 1,500 feet, and will soon emerge from the Blairmore. Despite recent volatility in potash demand, we have continued our steady and safe progress on these major projects. New potash capacity does not come cheap or easily, and it requires both a disciplined approach and conviction in the long term demand story. While we have throttled back future expansion plans, our conviction persists in our ongoing projects, because we know the world is going to need our additional production capacity.

Navigating competing demands between agriculture and natural resource development.
Posted on July 31, 2014
Written by Chad Eggerman
Saskatchewan’s economy has been growing at a feverish pace the past few years on the pillars of agriculture, mining, and oil-and-gas development. Although growth has recently settled at more sustainable levels, recent discussion in the province has centred around how to best use water resources in future development...
The potash-producing region in Saskatchewan directly overlaps prime agricultural land as well as considerable oil-and-gas reserves. There are two methods to mine potash: solution mining and conventional shaft mining. The solution-mining process involves the construction of a well field composed of at least two drill holes—one to send hot water down to the potash-bearing zones of rock, and another to bring the potash-laden brine up to the surface after percolating in an underground cavern.
Solution mining uses vast quantities of water. Currently, Vale proposes to build a 70-kilometre water pipeline to Katepwa Lake in the Qu’Appelle Valley to pump more than 40 million litres per day for their Kronau project (the equivalent of 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools). K+S Potash Canada is currently building a new solution potash mine and is planning on using up to 60 million litres of water per day. Different regulations in Saskatchewan apply depending on whether the water comes from the surface or the ground, the type of mining (for potash, solution or conventional), and the location (uranium in the north is regulated differently than potash in the south)...
The risk of water availability for farmers, miners, and oil-and-gas companies is becoming evident. Water supply agreements between miners and water suppliers, like SaskWater or a municipality, are becoming increasingly difficult to negotiate. The water supply agreement is a critical agreement to provide a certain amount of water at a set price. There are very significant risks for potash solution mines, which use water to operate if water supply is curtailed or discontinued...
There are a number of innovative projects in the province to mitigate these risks. Oil-and-gas companies are starting to use treated wastewater for their fracking operations. Municipalities in Alberta and Saskatchewan are now selling treated wastewater to oil companies. The treated wastewater can come from lagoons or from greywater discharge. This is a new revenue stream for municipalities and increases the certainty of water supply for oil-and-gas companies.
Western Potash Corp.’s new potash mine in Milestone, Saskatchewan recently received environmental assessment approval for the facility, including the use of City of Regina treated effluent as the industrial water source for its solution mining process. The water is purified to prevent foaming or scaling. This is the first potash mine in the world to use treated water.
It is expected the discussion between farmers and extractors of natural resources will continue in Saskatchewan and across Canada, with innovative technologies and agreements providing a way forward. WC

Aug 7 (Reuters) – A mechanical breakdown last week at Agrium Inc’s lone potash mine will keep it shut down longer than expected and cause the Canadian fertilizer company to lose money on potash for the second half of this year, the company said on Thursday.
The downtime will last three to four weeks longer than the 14 weeks planned to tie in its capacity expansion, Chief Executive Officer Chuck Magro said on a conference call.
