Graphene and the Oil Industry
To demonstrate, Hashim dropped the sponge into a dish of water with used motor oil floating on top. The sponge soaked it up. He then put a match to the material, burned off the oil and returned the sponge to the water to absorb more. The robust sponge can be used repeatedly and stands up to abuse; he said a sample remained elastic after about 10,000 compressions in the lab. The sponge can also store the oil for later retrieval, he said.
Move over BP in the Gulf of Mexico, make room for the scientists at Rice and Penn State Universities. The next time BP or anyone else sets off a giant oil spill, thanks to graphene and boron, we might finally have a fast way to deal with it and recover or burn off the oil.
But this new graphene/boron development has much wider uses than just bailing out the oil industry. “Oil-spill remediation and environmental cleanup are just the beginning of how useful these new nanotube materials could be," Terrones added. "For example, we could use these materials to make more efficient and lighter batteries. We could use them as scaffolds for bone-tissue regeneration. We even could impregnate the nanotube sponge with polymers to fabricate robust and light composites for the automobile and plane industries."
We are right at the start of the latest industrial revolution. “To infinity and beyond,” as someone once said, and they weren’t just talking about the Eurozone’s debt..

AMG updates progress on voluntary tender offer for Graphit Kropfmühl
April 16, 2012 (Source: Reuters) -- AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V.'s ("AMG", EURONEXT AMSTERDAM: "AMG") wholly owned subsidiary, AMG Invest GmbH ("AMG Invest") announced that it has acquired over 2.4% of the outstanding shares of Graphit Kropfmühl AG, ("GK") through the previously announced voluntary public tender offer (the "Voluntary Tender") pursuant to the German Securities Acquisition and Tender Act. AMG now owns approximately 90.6% of GK's shares. AMG Invest has also extended the Voluntary Tender period to April 25 following approval of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority ("BaFin").
AMG now owns more GK shares than the 90% threshold required to initiate a squeeze out in accordance with German securities law. Upon completion of the Voluntary Tender, AMG intends to initiate a squeeze out of the remaining minority shareholders with a goal to own 100% of GK..

New carbon-based material derived from graphene advances nanoelectronics
April 16, 2012 (Source: nanowerk) -- Scientists and engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have discovered an entirely new carbon-based material that is synthesized from the "wonder kid" of the carbon family, graphene. The discovery, which the researchers are calling "graphene monoxide (GMO)," pushes carbon materials closer to ushering in next-generation electronics (see paper in ACS Nano: "Evidence of Nanocrystalline Semiconducting Graphene Monoxide during Thermal Reduction of Graphene Oxide in Vacuum").
Graphene, a one-atom-thick layer of carbon that resembles a flat sheet of chicken wire at nanoscale, has the potential to revolutionize electronics because it conducts electricity much better than the gold and copper wires used in current devices. Transistors made of silicon are approaching the minimum size at which they can be effective, meaning the speed of devices will soon bottom out. Carbon materials at nanoscale could be the remedy.
Currently, applications for graphene are limited because it's too expensive to mass produce. Another problem is that, until now, graphene-related materials existed only as conductors or insulators.
"A major drive in the graphene research community is to make the material semiconducting so it can be used in electronic applications," says Junhong Chen, professor of mechanical engineering and a member of the research team. "Our major contribution in this study was achieved through a chemical modification of graphene."

"Regional Geology
The graphite-rich Menihek Formation (Fm) paraschist and the Sokoman Fm iron formation of the Gagnon Group in the Grenville Province were derived from the Paleoproterozoic Labrador Trough basin sediments.
In the Labrador Trough, the original sedimentary textures show that the iron formation units were deposited principally as chemical sediments with high iron and silica (chert) and characteristically low aluminum in a series of linked basins. The Menihek Formation formed from pelitic sediments filling basins.
Local Geology
The property is underlain principally by the mica-quartz-feldspar schist and paragneiss of the Menihek Formation. Mineralogy locally includes garnet and kyanite (or sillimanite?) plus minor bands of calcsilicate. The host rock of the graphite zones appears the same with the only significant variation being the amount of graphite and variations in calcsilicate bands.
Murphy interpreted the Menihek Fm as infilling a complexly folded, Y-shaped syncline with one arm trending north-northwest, the second striking west-northwest and the third striking south to south-southeast. The limit of the syncline is marked by the contact with the underlying Sokoman Fm with variable iron-mineral facies. Previous interpretations of the detailed drilling by Mazarin showed a number of closed folds that formed part of their initial resource estimation in 1989. The present interpretation recognizes that the graphite zones may be sheared en echelon along the northern trend and may, in fact, be more isolated bands.
The present study maintained a tighter constraint with less interpretation as to potential fold closures. Further drill testing will aid in resolving the relations among the graphite bands."

bzgl. der relevanten Infrastruktur @ Lac Knife, Carheil Lake:
Local Resources and Infrastructure
Since the start of iron mining at Mont-Wright ~50 years ago, important infrastructure has been installed to service the exploitation of the four iron mines in the region: Mont-Wright (ArcelorMittal Minerals Canada), Carol Mine (Iron Ore Company of Canada IOCC), Wabush Mine and Lac Bloom Mine (Cliffs Natural Resources).
Fermont, QC is the closest municipality with about 3,200 inhabitants. Including Labrador City and Wabush towns in Labrador, located 30 km away, the regional population is about 15,000. These municipalities have the infrastructure to provide services for accommodations, community services, a skilled mining labour force, as well as mining contractors and related services. Several truck transportation companies regularly service the region from Baie-Comeau. The Wabush airport is the nearest point for scheduled and charter flights from Sept-Iles, Québec, Montréal, and Newfoundland-Labrador destinations with four scheduled airlines operating daily flights.
Two railway systems serve the region: the Quebec Cartier Railway Company, the privately-owned and operatedrailroad that links ArcelorMittal’s Mont-Wright facility to their Port Cartier pellet plant and port (416 km) at approximately 15 km from the property. The Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway Co., owned by IOC is a common-carrier railroad that links Labrador City to the Port of Sept-Iles (360 km), and is located at approximately 30km from the property. The Hydro Québec main power line to Fermont and the local mines passes less than five km east of the deposit.

Carbon nanotube electrodes improve solar cells
April 17, 2012 (Source: nanowerk) -- Forests of carbon nanotubes are an efficient alternative for platinum electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC), according to new research by collaborators at Rice University and Tsinghua University.
The single-wall nanotube arrays, grown in a process invented at Rice, are both much more electroactive and potentially cheaper than platinum, a common catalyst in DSCs, said Jun Lou, a materials scientist at Rice. In combination with newly developed sulfide electrolytes synthesized at Tsinghua, they could lead to more efficient and robust solar cells at a fraction of the current cost for traditional silicon-based solar cells..
