VUZIX CORP. NEW - es geht weiter ...

Uns allen weiterhin viel Erfolg.

Anything GoPro can do, Vuzix can do better.
The release of a Vuzix helmet mount forebodes direct competition on helmet cameras.
This is another market for Vuzix which seldom gets any attention whatsoever.
Vuxiz Who?
Although the company has been written up here on Seeking Alpha, and has been featured on Fox, CNET, Bloomberg, Engadet, and in Fortune and PC Magazine, Vuzix (OTCQB:VUZI) still flies relatively low under the radar for an up and coming wearables company. In fact, for a company with inked deals with Salesforce, NTT Docomo, SAP, Lenovo and others, its suspiring that even most techies who I meet have never heard of Vuzix.
So who is Vuzix and why should you care? Vuzix is one of the oldest companies in the wearables and the smart glasses space. The company has been designing small screens for well over a decade for customers like the US Department of Defense. Under the leadership of CEO Paul Travers, the company refocused its R&D on the development of smart glasses, specifically focusing on the enterprise customer.
Enterprise applications of the Vuzix platform are broad, and the glasses can be used for hands-free assistance in tasks including warehouse picking, field service, and a plethora of other applications.
GoPro Without The Pros
In the past year or two, atheletes, groomsmen, and many others have found a multitude of uses for the GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO) cameras. The cameras are essentially small rugged devices that mount on practically anything and record video which is then shared online. The company IPO'd in July at $24 a share, before climbing to over $80. Most recently, sales of the cameras have continued to grow and to impress investors. I have no reason to believe that the relatively young market for these cameras will reach saturation in the very near future, and the very nature of the use of these cameras (while jumping out of planes or dodging sharks) means that these devices may need replacements relatively frequently.
Now while GoPro may have created the market for sports cameras, the device faces some limitations which will ultimately become the company's downfall. As small as the cameras are, they are not suitable for certain sports like cycling or distance running. How is that? Cyclists for example are neurotic about the weight of their equipment and aim to shave grams of component weights. At the same time they go crazy over aerodynamics. A cyclist who shaves off his leg hair for aerodynamic purposes is unlikely to mount a camera sticking up from his helmet.
Similarly, an NFL player is not going to wear a GoPro during a game. The current camera being explored is not nearly as intrusive as a GoPro, but as is apparent from the website promoting the product, is early in its development.
What Vuzix Can And Will Do
Right now GoPro cameras can record video, and that's about it. Image a scenario where you could see the football field live from the perspective of the quaterback, the peleton from the view of the cyclist, and the slope from the perspective of the skier-live. Now imagine this capability in the unobtrusive form factor of the Vuzix M100, and this becomes a reality.
In its current existence, GoPros can record video. Vuzix smart glasses can record video, and display real-time stats to a player or athlete like the game clock, the play clock, plays from the sidelines, wind and weather metrics, and more.
Comparing the two products side-by-side, the Vuzix smart glasses is competitive to the GoPro across most metrics. In terms of resolution, the GoPro Hero edges out the M100 with the ability to film in 4K, while the M100 peaks at 1080P. While this does make a difference to those who want to view film in slow-motion, for most videographers this is not make-or-break, and it is only available in GoPro's most advanced iterations of the device.
In terms of connectivity, both devices are Bluetooth and WiFi compatible. When it comes to battery, the M100 wallops the GoPro with up to 6 hours of battery life compared with up to 2 hours for the GoPro. Where the M100 really stands out is in the added features that come standard with smart glasses. The M100 is capable of communication and has a headphone, the GoPro doesn't.
Overall the largest differentiator between the M100 and the GoPro aside from the form factor is the screen. Having hands-free data available is a huge value add for both the professional and non-professional athlete. No more reaching for your phone when biking or skiing. The M100 can do so much more than just record video. The M100 can use its built-in GPS sensor to track speed, distance, and the route of an athlete. With a built in compass and accelerometer, the M100 can direct athletes, detect crashes, and even summon for help with a connection to a paired phone. The M100 also integrates voice recognition for hands-free operation, runs Android, and can pair with an Android or iOS phone.
And finally, the form factor. The M100 is a fraction of the size of the GoPro, and weighs less as well. This makes for a less obtrusive device, which is less likely to be damaged in the course of the sport.
Vuzix's Entry
Vuzix's small size gives the company the capability to enter and exit markets freely. In a seemingly benign press release, the company let investors know that it plans on disrupting the market of wearable cameras. In a press release last week, Vuzix announced that it will release a helmet mount for its device, and will incorporate the use of its device in the Road Titans 300 Race.
During the race, a few select riders will use the M100 Smart Glasses along with a new mount that connects to their bicycle helmets. The riders will be testing the mount and at the same time recording footage as well as running apps and utilizing the smart glasses to increase their performance.
The news didn't make much of an impact on the stock price, likely because investors didn't take this as announcement that Vuzix plans on competing with GoPro head-on. There is reason for investors to believe that Vuzix could easily unseat GoPro and take away at least half of the marketshare in sports cameras, and with it, half of GoPro's market cap, or a cool billion dollars.
Shareholder Letter
Additionally, Vuzix released a shareholder letter last week with some important forward-looking information for investors. In the letter, Travers gave over some important information to investors. In my last article, I wrote the following regarding Vuzix's financial status:
Looking at Vuzix's income statement, the company has been running a $1 million operating loss per quarter. At that rate of cash burn, the company would need to undergo another round of financing within the next 12 months. Now that probably will not happen since Vuzix will likely become cash flow positive in the current quarter.
Gross margins at Vuzix excluding depreciation and amortization have stood at about 40% since the release of the M100. Since Lenovo will be marketing the device, SG&A will remain almost completely flat, and any increase will be offset by higher gross margins as manufacturing rates rise and create economies of scale.
In the second quarter, Vuzix boosted product sales by 19%, and the company stated that it expects a larger increase in the current quarter. Investors have been waiting for the company to become cash flow positive, and while they likely won't see that this quarter, the fourth quarter will the first full quarter since the Lenovo started shipping Vuzix products under the co-branding and marketing deal.
Also newsworthy is the likelihood that Vuzix will uplist to the NASDAQ in the coming year. From the shareholder letter it appears that the only thing holding the company back from being listed is a $5 million shareholders' equity requirement. Currently, the largest impediment towards reaching that mark is the large derivative liability from outstanding warrants. Currently, these warrants which have an exercise price of $2.75 are in-the-money, and if cash exercised would bring in $8 million, and send Vuzix past that threshold. With the stock around $3.50, and considering past exercises, warrant holders will continue to convert as the share price rises.
The Bottom Line
While I chew through the financials in my prior articles, the big news here, which never hit headlines the way it should have, is the fact that Vuzix is entering GoPro's market with some serious edges. Why would someone purchase a single-purpose camera when a competing company makes a multipurpose device with far more utility? This press release was excellent news for Vuzix investors, and at the same time should make GoPro investors consider taking some profits.
Editor's Note: This article covers one or more stocks trading at less than $1 per share and/or with less than a $100 million market cap. Please be aware of the risks associated with these stocks.
