It also includes "the responsible reopening of the Panguna mine which is a vital economic asset that holds the potential to sustain a significant portion of Bougainville's budget."
Dazu gibts wenig Interpretationsspielraum! Für mich ist das klar, genauso wie seine Wiederwahl...

“Independence remains the ultimate goal,” Toroama stated, outlining his administration’s Six Point Strategy as the guiding framework. Key achievements highlighted include:
[...]
Economic Control: Launching the “Anchoring Bougainville Economy” program to establish local control over revenue and investment. This includes creating a Bougainville-owned investment registry, restructuring the tax office into a Bougainville Revenue House, and planning the “responsible reopening” of the crucial Panguna mine, seen as vital for future budget sustainability.
Was auch immer “responsible reopening” bedeutet, ich finde, es klingt sehr gut.
Im Hintergrund wird schon fleißig gearbeitet.
Safety awareness carried out on Panguna mine

THE independent Panguna Mine Legacy Impact Assessment (PMLIA) in its Phase 1 report released in December 2024, identified safety risks associated with geotechnical instability in the slopes of the open pit.
Persistent alluvial and smallscale mining (ASM) activities have contributed to these risks along with erosion and water run-off.
As a precaution, the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) erected signs and communicated with those in the area via text messages in December and January about the potential risks of landslides exacerbated by informal ASM.
In follow up, officials from the ABG, Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL), the Panguna Landowners Interim Council (PLIC), Ioro 2 Community Government as well as Central, North, and South veterans met with local landowners and alluvial miners on 7 May.
The Panguna meeting was aimed at raising further awareness and encouraging cooperation.
BCL outlined the need for safe site access to carry out early-stage exploration activities under its existing EL01 exploration licence.
The ABG and BCL respectfully requested that informal miners vacate high risk areas in the interests of safety and, also to support BCL’s planned pre-feasibility project work.
Following this engagement, the ABG hosted a multi-agency meeting on 5 June to begin developing a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) to complement existing disaster management plans and protocols.
Global consulting firm Tetra Tech Coffey, which has been engaged to carry out the PMLIA work, presented updates on geotechnical monitoring work that is being undertaken under Phase 2 of the legacy assessment.
The ABG will have access to relevant data regarding ground movement at vulnerable sites in the pit and along the mine access road.
