I’m live-blogging the keynote by Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs this morning from Moscone West in San Francisco at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The session is expected to start at 10 a.m. The room is already close to standing-room only; when I came into the building this morning, there was the usual line around the blog of conference attendees. (Tickets to the WWDC sold out weeks ago.)

   * 9:40 There aren’t a whole lot of hints in the room about what’s coming.  On stage, there’s a big black leather chair - the same or similar to the one Jobs sat in the day they launched the iPad.  There’s also a small podium with a couple of bottles of water, and the usual large display screen with a large white Apple logo. Over to the left side of the room, there are enough cameras to staff a press conference at the Super Bowl.

   * 9:55 Apple shares, which were down earlier, have ticked up, and now show a gain of 14 cents, to $256.11.

   * 10:01 It’s great to be here, he says. Someone yells, “We love you, Steve.”  Steve says, “thanks you, I think.” There are over 5,200 attendees. They sold out in 8 days. Over 120 sessions at WWDC this week. Over 1,000 Apple engineers at the show.
   * 10:03 First, some updates. Starting with iPads. A whole new way to interact with the Internet, apps, content. It is magical.  Sold over 2 million iPads. One every three seconds. Now in 10 countries. (This is old news.) He’s now showing a video clip of news coverage of the iPad launch in various countries. Another round of applause. Will be 19 countries by end of July.
   * 10:06 There are now 8,500 native iPad apps in the App Store. Downloaded over 35 million times. About 17 apps per iPad already. “That’s a great number,” he says. He’s rattling off some of the apps, including a lot of newspapers and magazines.
   * 10:08 iBooks app is being updated today. Over 5 million books in first 65 days. 2.5 books per iPad. 5 of 6 biggest publishers in U.S.; they say market share is up to 22% in just 8 weeks. As we ship more iPads, he says, the number will go up, and up, and up.
   * 10:09 On enhancements for iBooks: you can now take notes. Also new tap-to-bookmark feature, with bookmarks showing in table of contents. Also iBooks can now be used to read PDFs. Can choose between books and PDFs; new set of bookshelves for PDFs. That’s coming later this month.
   * 10:11 On the App Store: Jobs says there are two platforms at Apple. HTML5, which is fully open platform, created by standards  bodies. Apple’s browsers are in the lead in supporting the standard. Second platform is the App Store, with over 225,000 apps now. The most vibrant app community on the planet. Jobs says they get 15,000 app submissions a week, new and updates. They come in up to 30 different languages. Of those 95% are approved within 7 days. (He said the same thing last week at D.) Rejected apps are due to apps that don’t function as advertised; or use of private APIs; or they crash.
   * 10:15 eBay said at D that they will do $1.5 billion to $2 billion in volume this year.
   * 10:15 Three new apps coming to store soon. First, Netflix (NFLX) on the iPhone. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is here. This summer, they will launch an app for the iPhone. Can start on big screen TV, and resume current movie on the phone. Personalized recommendations. Can seamlessly switch between WiFi and 3G. App will be free.
   * 10:18 Next, Zynga. CEO Mark Pincus is here. Today introducing Farmville for the iPhone. They have 35 million players of Zynga games every day. Farmville has over 70 million monthly active users. They have raised over $2 million to help Haiti. Access to same farm, decorations, friends as on Facebook.
   * 10:19 While the guys on stage are farming, I’ll check on the stock price: AAPL is now down 68 cents, at $255.20. By the way: Netflix shares are up 2%.
   * 10:23 Next, Activision (ATVI) SVP Karthink Bala to talk about Guitar Hero for the iPhone and iPod Touch. There are new strumming and whammy bar features. Rock on. Among other goodies. The app is available in the App Store today for $2.99.
   * 10:26 More data. Steve says last week they crossed 5 billion downloads from the App Store. To date, Apple has paid developers more than $1 billion for their slice of the App pie.

   * 10:28 Steve offers some data: report from Nielsen for Q1 2010 on smartphone, RIMM has 35% share, iPhone 28%, Windows Mobile 19%, Android 9%, Other 9%. Another study, U.S. mobile browser usage: iPhone 58.2%. Android, 22.7%. RIMM 12.7%.
   * 10:30 Back to iPhone. In 2007, he says, Apple re-invented the phone. There was no App Store or free market for apps. In 2008, added 3G networking and the app store. In 2009, 3GS is twice as fast. For 2010, the biggest leap since the original iPhone.

   * 10:31 First, all new design. “How many of you have already seen this?” Jobs says it is one of the most beautiful designs you have ever seen. Glass front and rear. Stainless teal on the edge. Closest kin is beautiful old Leica camera. 9.3 mm thick, 24% thinner than 3GS. Thinnest smart phone on the planet. front-facing camera, camera and LED flash on the back. Headset jack on the top. The stainless steal band are the primary structure of the phone; the bands are used as part of the antenna system. Integrated antennas right in the structure of the phone, never been done before, he says.
   * 10:36 Second, “retina display.” In any display there are pixels. 4x as many pixels in same amount of space. You get much sharper text as a result. 326 pixels per inch. Never been display like this on a phone. It also turns out, he says, that around 300 pixels, is limit of human retina to differentiate the pixels. Things start to look like continuous curves, like a fine printed book. At 326 pixels per inch, we are comfortably over that limit. He is doing a demo, comparing the 3GS with the iPhone 4. Hard to see on the screen from 20 or so rows back. The demo gods are not with him, though, as he tries to compare the display of the New York Times web site on the two phones. Connectivity problems! That’s not supposed to happen. He switches to photos, again to demonstrate the richer nature of the new display. Demo ends, a little more abruptly than planned.
   * 10:44 Steve notes that they have 800:1 contrast ratio, 4x improvement. 78% of the pixels on iPad.
   * 10:45 Existing apps look better, since text automatically rendered at higher resolution.
   * 10:46 Third, A4 chip powers the device. Designed by own team. ARM based. The phone is “backed to the gills” in terms of silicon. Using Micro SIM for external storage. Biggest component it the battery. Up to 40% more talk time from 5 hours to 7 hours.  10 hours WiFi browsing, 10 hours video. 40 hours music. 300 hours of standby. Up to 32 GB of storage. Quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA. Dual mics for noise cancellation. 802.11n WiFi.
   * 10:50 Four, adding a gyroscope. 3x gyro, also rotation around gravity; tied it with accelerometer; 6-axis motion sensing. Perfect for gaming. Built into every iPhone 4. He’s doing a demo. You get much more precise movement of objects. He’s playing a version of Jenga that looks totally cool. (Although I have no idea if it is an actual game.) Already in every phone also compass and proximity sensor and ambient light sensor.
   * 10:53 Five, a whole new camera system. How do we make better pictures - not just about megapixels. It is about capturing photos, he says, and low-light photography. To 5 MP from 3 MP sensor. Using back-side illuminated sensor. Getting wiring out of the way. 1.75 micro pixel side. 5x digital zoom in camera app. Tap to focus. LED Flash. Pictures off this are pretty remarkable, he says.
   * 10:56 But that’s not all. Also records HD video. 720p and 36 frames per second. Tap to focus video. Built-in video editing. One-click sharing. LED Flash for illuminating scenes for video recording. So record and edit HD video on your phone - and send it. Also written a new app: iMovie for iPhone. And now we get a demo of the new app. Software architect Randy Ubillos is doing the demo. You can edit clips, add titles, change transitions, insert still photos, records geo-location information, can insert theme music.  You can change different themes that are pre-installed.  

 

 

 

Apple hat das iPhone 4 vorgestellt. Apple-Chef Steve Jobs ließ es sich nicht nehmen, die neueste Version des Smartphones persönlich auf der Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco zu präsentieren. Außer ein paar dringend nötigen Updates gab es auch einige handfeste Überraschungen. Wir haben das Geschehen live verfolgt und verraten, ob das iPhone 4 wirklich der erwartete große Wurf ist.  

Die auf den ersten Blick auffälligste Neuerung ist das neue Design des iPhone 4. Ein Rahmen aus rostfreiem Edelstahl zieht sich um das gesamte Handy und dient gleichzeitig als Antenne. Dadurch soll der Empfang entscheidend verbessert werden, gleichzeitig sinkt der Energieverbrauch. Alle Knöpfe mit Ausnahme des Home-Buttons sind aus Metall, die Vorder- und Rückseite besteht aus Glas. Obwohl das iPhone seinen gewölbten Rücken verliert, hinterlässt es dennoch einen recht filigranen Eindruck. Kein Wunder: Schließlich ist das Gerät mit 9,3 Millimetern Durchmesser 24 Prozent dünner als sein Vorgänger.  

Trotz des kleineren Gehäuses gelang es den Apple-Ingenieuren, den Akku deutlich zu vergrößern - nicht zuletzt durch die Verwendung einer Micro SIM anstelle einer herkömmlichen SIM-Karte. Laut Steve Jobs soll das iPhone 4 bis zu 300 Stunden im Stand-by durchhalten. Der größere Akku versetzt Apple in die Lage, das iPhone 4 mit dem aus dem iPad bekannten Apple A4-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1 GHz auszustatten. Angesichts des effizienten Betriebssystems dürfte das Apple-Handy damit wieder das schnellste Smartphone auf dem Markt sein.  

Dank der gesteigerten Rechenleistung sollte Multitasking - das Apple mit dem iPhone OS4 auf seine Handys bringt - kein Problem mehr sein. Darüber hinaus kann das iPhone 4 auch HD-Videos abspielen. Damit die auch zur Geltung kommen, spendiert Apple seinem Handy ein Display der Superlative. Die Auflösung liegt bei 960 x 640 Bildpunkten, mehr als jedes andere Modell zur Zeit. Das Kontrastverhältnis liegt bei 800:1 - viermal besser als beim iPhone 3GS. Die zugrunde liegende Technologie namens "IPS" ist laut Steve Jobs "ein ganzes Stück besser als OLED"  

Viel getan hat sich auch bei der Kamera. Die hat in der neuesten Version eine Auflösung von 5 Megapixel und verfügt erstmals über ein LED-Licht. Damit soll sogar die Aufnahme von HD-Filmen möglich sein. Dafür hat Apple extra eine iPhone-Version seiner Videoschnitt-Software iMovie entwickelt. Zusätzlich verfügt das iPhone 4 auch über eine Kamera auf der Vorderseite, die für Videotelefonate genutzt werden kann.  

Um die Sprachqualität zu verbessern spendiert Apple dem iPhone 4 außerdem ein zweites Mikrophon. Dieses dient nur dazu, Umgebungsgeräusche aufzunehmen, die dann herausgefiltert werden. Eine ähnliche Technik kommt auch beim Google Nexus One zum Einsatz. Für viel Jubel sorgte auch die Ankündigung von Steve Jobs, dass das neue iPhone ein Gyroskop in sich trägt. Dieser 3D-Lagesensor dürfte vor allem Spielefans begeistern. Eine kleine Enttäuschung gab es dagegen beim Speicher: Entgegen vieler Erwartungen wird auch das iPhone 4 mit maximal 32 GB angeboten. Hier haben andere Handys dank Speicherkartenunterstützung mittlerweile mehr zu bieten.  

Weitere Neuheiten gab es vor allem beim Betriebssystem. Das iPhone OS 4 wurde zwar schon im April vorgestellt. Doch Steve Jobs ließ es sich nicht nehmen, in seiner Keynote einige zusätzliche Features zu verraten. So werden die Betriebssysteme für iPhone, iPod Touch und iPad künftig iOS heißen. Das neue System soll vor allem Multitasking, eine bessere Datensicherheit, eine übersichtliche Ordnerstruktur und viele weitere Extras bieten. Eine echte Überraschung ist zudem, dass iOS künftig auch die Microsoft-Suchmaschine Bing! integriert hat.  

Ob das neue iPhone 4 der neue große Wurf ist oder nicht, ist einmal mehr Ansichtssache. Kritiker werden bemängeln, dass viele der Neuerungen bei der Konkurrenz schon längst zum Standard gehören. Das gilt vor allem für die Kamera oder das bei Apple lange vermisste Multitasking. Andererseits setzt das iPhone 4 vor allem bei der Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit aber auch beim Display einmal mehr neue Maßstäbe. Das neue Design ist freilich Geschmackssache, ein Update war hier jedoch schon längst überfällig. Davon abgesehen ist das Software-Angebot für das Apple-Handy der Konkurrenz noch immer weit voraus (wie unsere Aufstellung der 10 besten iPhone-Apps zeigt). Ob das auf Dauer ausreicht und vor allem den deutlich höheren Preis rechtfertigt, wird sich herausstellen, wenn das iPhone 4 am 24 Juni in den USA auf den Markt kommt.  

 

.........Ab dem 24 Juni ist es erhältlich, das neue iPhone 4. Zumindest in Frankreich, Deutschland, Großbritannien, den USA und Japan. In den USA kostet das Gerät mit einem Mobilfunkvertrag 199$ für die 16 GByte -Version und 299$ für die 32 Gbyte -Version. Doch was hat Steve Jobs an seinem neuen Flaggschiff geändert?............
