DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION WORLD SERIES 2021: Rakuten Mobile CTO Tareq Amin (pictured) noted partnerships and collaboration across the value chain are vital to the long-term success of a new cloud connectivity business rather than pursuing a hardware strategy.

During a Q&A session, Amin explained cloud unit Rakuten Symphony has some unique IP, but noted the overall value lies in the external businesses it can work with.

Rakuten Symphony has five business units:
- unified cloud
- network functions from an acquisition of Altiostar
- intelligent operation
- billing platform
- internet ecosystem services group

It has offices in Singapore, India, Europe and Boston in the US.

Telefónica Takes Big Step to Fulfill Aggressive 5G Open RAN Vision

Telefónica is one of the world’s largest telecom and wireless operators with operations throughout Europe and Latin America. It is also one of the world’s most innovative companies operating by the motto “corporations face two options: Disrupt or be disrupted.”

One of the areas that the company is investing in heavily now is Open RAN. This week the company announced its next step in its aggressive roll out: an agreement with NEC to serve as the prime system integrator to implement and conduct trials of multi-vendor-based Open RAN solutions with the Telefónica group’s operating companies in four global markets. The scale of the agreement includes deployments in at least 800 sites for commercial use starting in 2022.

Already, Telefónica announced it had selected Altiostar as its RAN partner of choice. With NEC onboard, Telefónica has an experienced integration partner to look at installation and deployment services of the open RAN network across four countries, i.e. Brazil, Spain, UK and Germany.

For a population of 1.14 billion, this means more than 600 million people in the region lack access to an array of digital platforms that deliver meaningful benefits, spanning medical and healthcare services, learning and training, and participation in commerce and global trade.

Such problems are not confined to developing nations and emerging markets, though. Countries with more robust infrastructure, including the U.S. and Japan, are also deeply affected by a lack of cellular broadband. Key geographic regions of developed nations lack coverage, leading to digital disparities. In Japan, for instance, it is very difficult and costly to provide cellular service to rural and mountainous regions. This leaves many families without access to amenities that the rest of the nation finds essential.

SpaceMobile stands to accelerate our customers’ efforts to resolve serious issues exacerbated by lack of connectivity. We plan to begin initial service after launching our BlueBird production satellites, then expand SpaceMobile to the rest of the globe with a total of 168 satellites. Telefónica has worked with Altiostar closely on some of its early Open RAN deployments including Telefónica Deutschland, O2 (Telefónica UK), Movistar Argentina and Telefónica Colombia. These trials have successfully covered the gamut of network scenarios and they have fulfilled all Telefónica’s requirements. These include delivering “4G/5G essential features including massive MIMO, dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), NB-IoT or RAN sharing, while complying with an extensive list of key performance indicators (KPIs) aimed to verify that performance is on par with traditional RAN.”

Telefónica’s commitment to Open RAN is made real by its selection of NEC to integrate the next phase of its network roll out. The operator has publicly stated its intention to have Open RAN account for up to 50% of its RAN growth between 2022 and 2025. This aggressive roadmap highlights the company’s leadership in creating a next-generation network that supports the full complement of 5G services with an infrastructure that is agile and cost effective. Startups May Be The Next Ones To Launch An IPO

Many Singapore tech startups have gone public or are intending to do so in the next few months. That’s because the pandemic has accelerated the need for tech-related services.

The cashback rewards platform ShopBack is said to be working on raising capital in its Series E round from new and existing investors. It was founded in 2014 by Henry Chan, Joel Leong, and Shanru Lai.

In December last year, it raised US$75 million in an extended funding round led by Temasek, with participation from existing investors like Rakuten and EDBI. Total publicly known funding is at US$113 million since its inception.

The company said last year the extended funding would be used to enhance its technology infrastructure, expand data capabilities, and drive growth in existing markets.

To deal with the pandemic, ShopBack has been extra-focused on optimising the business and rationalising its cost structure to operate more effectively with limited resources. The goal is to keep expenses as low as possible without significantly slowing business growth, while also innovating on new features.

5G has had an astonishing impact on users’ average download speeds. Thailand's AIS users experienced the most remarkable improvement of 1775.2% in their average download speeds with 5G compared to 4G, followed by those on Japan's Rakuten (1560.5%) and Saudi Arabia's Zain (1560.2%). Carousell turns unicorn after raising US$100 million for US$1.1 billion value

Carousell was founded in 2012 and counts venture capital firms Golden Gate Ventures, Sequoia India, 500 Startups and Singapore’s Economic Development Board’s investment arm EDBI among its investors.

Rakuten Europe launches Rakuten Pay in the UK – at Hayward Gallery’s latest contemporary art exhibition

Rakuten Pay allows payment by scanning QR codes displayed on a tablet device in the store or scanning a printed QR code with a smartphone – the amount is then charged to a registered credit card or (in Japan) to a linked Rakuten bank account. In Japan Rakuten Pay is supported by more than 5 million locations across the country and Rakuten Europe just recently launched a first trial for the region at ATP Mallorca Championship, where users could pay for food and beverages through the new app.

As part of Rakuten’s unique Membership Platform, Club Rakuten UK, it now continues its journey across Europe.

In the UK and through the link to Club Rakuten, Rakuten Pay App seamlessly connects all available Rakuten services – and for the first time cultural live events.

Visitors of the exhibition, which lasts from September 9th to December 12th, 2021 will be able to pay at the three gallery shops using Rakuten Pay, earning Rakuten Points and getting access to unique discounts – for example a 50% discount on the sought-after exhibition tote bags.

New users will also receive a welcome points bonus that can be spent at the Hayward Gallery and Southbank Centre shops. Amin: Actually, it's a lot more. I personally will tell you, I had calls with various CXOs of over 75 mobile operators and we of course had a discussion, not only with the CTO of the mobile operators but also their CEOs and various business units. Because this is what we believe Symphony is offering: Is a fundamental transformation on technology, on business model, combined with our digital internet assets. We think it's a story at least worth to be heard from our future customers.

Our entire focus as we started to materialize Rakuten and Symphony to focus on getting Rakuten to be built in another geography: that is absolutely critical for this accessible open RAN architecture. We had amazing discussions with several Tier 1s, lots of startups. Diana, I will share with you probably one of the most exciting things for us in Rakuten is the announcement about Rakuten and Symphony and RCP being awarded the largest open RAN contract in the heart of Europe, in Germany, working with 1&1 AG.

Early signs about the interest and the adoption of Symphony is absolutely phenomenal.

Fierce: Very briefly, how close are other operators beyond 1&1 to adopting Symphony?

Amin: You know, what I notice which is really, I would say amazing, good news that is happening. If I tell you in 2018, I noticed that the remarks about what we were doing is... Mostly was, okay, this is fascinating what Rakuten is doing, but too much risk. In some cases, a lot of skepticism, whether this will work or not. As years progressed, as we continue to focus on delivery and results and materialization of this architecture highlighting its advantages to the larger ecosystem. I also saw the positiveness coming about from my colleagues and the entire ecosystem to support what Rakuten is doing. It went from, it's an interesting to watch project to something that really has validity. I am feeling thrilled and excited that operators now are committing to this journey.

The Open RAN forum is becoming stronger. The desire to do what we have done and the will is absolutely there. I think we have an amazing momentum. Not just as Rakuten but the industry as a whole, to finally change the old architecture in a new world, in which elasticity, resiliency and cloud are the essence and the DNA of how you build telco workloads. I'm feeling extremely optimistic, and the early signs about the interest and the adoption of this is absolutely phenomenal.
